Ever since the first time I saw someone engrave a challenge coin with a laser I've wanted to try it. Now, I finally have everything I need and in this video I show how simple it is to make these amazing looking challenge coins!
STLTOPNG I used: fenrus75.githu...

This is a great video. Short and too the point. No over powering background music or bad robot voiceover. It was a perfect step by step. Thank you

Awesome video! Making coins is a lot of fun. If you want you can setup a sub layer to run your cleanup pass immediately after your engraving layer finishes.

I had a cleanup pass sub layer set at one point but then when I made the video I completely forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder!

First, nicely done on the video. On clean-up passes, Lightburn now lets you incorporate clean-up into your image layer. When you Select 3D slice a switch appears directly below for a clean-up pass. You can set up the number of etching passes and then the number of etching passes to run before running a clean-up pass. The setup is a little different for vector images, but the idea is the same. Also, if you go into Edit>Device Settings, under Other Options there is a switch labeled "Require framing before start". Turning this off will allow a job to start without framing first. I usually leave it on unless I'm doing a batch job with a jig. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing! I knew about the clean up pass and was actually using it before I made the video. Then when I made the video I completely blanked on using the clean-up sub layer. 🤦‍♂️ Great info on the framing before start setting!

I forgot to mention, STL2PNG will also work with regular 3d stl files. The advantage to this is you have a much broader selection of stl files to choose from. One great source is Thingiverse. Also, you can select your viewing angle by using a free program called Cura. You just open the stl file in Cura, rotate it for the angle you want, and then export it as a new stl file.

@@LetsMakeAThing The one engraving I did was a simple engrave and to finish the job, I created a filled circle layer with my cleaning parameters , (1500mm/s @ 40% pwr, 80 kHz), then ran that layer for 25 passes and it finished beautifully. Right now I'm burning a fricking parrot, 150 passes with a cleaning pass every 5 burn layers. It may not require that frequency of cleaning, but, the bit of extra time it takes is OK.... To keep from "over-cleaning", make sure to clean only the last current layers burned, don't select "clean all layers".....

I think unless the user has some laser like xTool F1 Ultra or similar. It would be much easier to earn $1000\month engraving cards than coin which takes so much time. And you're very right that fiber laser is the way for metals.

I've been trying to get deeper images like these on my 30w omtech, but can't seem to get very much depth. Maybe my settings are really off. Nice to see you were able to do it with a 30w though.

I used the text tool in Lightburn and engraved it after the tool image.

You can mark brass with a diode laser but to do deep engraving you need a fiber laser.
