Lilac's are really an old fashioned flower been around a really long time think first festival was about 1898. My grandmother had a lot of them all in this color so it is a fond memory. I remember her out tending her flower garden in the 40's. Thx now that I have Sunflower's done guess Lilac's are next.

I like using a piece of paper rather than a paper towel i.will throw away. So I am working on 2 art pieces at the same time. The "no waste" painting is usually abstract and pen/ink doodles can be added as well.

Betty Ryan: I live in Northern Lower Michigan, and when we moved to our home 20 years ago, I planted lilacs all over our yard before I even unpacked the boxes! They are so gorgeous in June! I didn't realize that they don't grow down South. Lots of other beautiful flowers there though! 💕🌸😊

OneTrueWord1988 Thank you for writing. The south have a plant called Crepe Myrtles that looks like the lilac tree which we have around our yard. It is the scent of the lilac that I miss the most. Lucky you to have them in your yard. Enjoy them especially now that we are quarantine. Be safe! 😷🌸🌷

I have done lilacs before and didn't get them quite right. Too loose, now I see how to do it loose and then to add small amounts of detail to make you think that the detail is there. Thanks!

Love the painting, enjoy your classes. Please don't smash your woody lilac stems. I grow many varieties of lilacs in my enormous flower gardens. Smashing the stems is a common myth, but it destroys the xylem and phloem inside the stems, which is how the plant(or tree) transports its water and nutrition. Instead it helps to add floral food to cut flower water that you can either get in packets or in bulk like I do, or make it yourself. I love my cut lilacs but no matter what you do, they will not last inside for long. That's why I prefer mine surrounding my home and property live on the bushes. They are a wonderful plant and I love your rendition of them.

@@ellencrimitrent Maybe she knows something I don't, but I have about 20 different varieties of lilacs I grow on my property and I have been cutting flowers and selling them for years. I find that just a fresh cut with sharp pruning scissor does the trick. Lilacs just do not last long freshly cut, which is such a sad thing. They look so gorgeous alone or in bouquets, but you end up removing them because those along with iris die off first no matter what you do. And Tulips will keep growing in the vase, so you do not want to cut them diagonally because that will encourage them to grow longer. I cut so many lilacs at once I would never take the time to split every woody stem. If she wants to, she is welcome to. You have definitely inspired me to try and paint some of my fresh lilacs if it ever warms up here in Vermont! Thanks for great tutorials.
