I love it when master composers have a moment of humility and create simpler, super easy pieces like this one that invite the novice in and allow us all to enjoy performing their work.

As far as the piano etudes go, Fanfares, Fem, and Arc-en-ciel might be better for beginners. L'escalier du diable and Automne a Varsovie are my personal favorites though.

For most of the piece, one hand is holding down a set of piano keys while the other hand plays a pattern over them. The pattern includes some of the keys that are held down, so those don't make a sound when they're played; there's just a blank space there. It sounds almost the same as if those held-down notes were not played at all, but having one hand "play" them as part of a pattern tightens up the rhythm a bit, and keeps the piece moving with this really cool stuttering feeling. As far as the notes themselves, this isn't really a piece with a definable melody. There are patterns of notes, to be sure, but it's not something you'll walk away humming. Think of it more as like a percussion piece.

this is fairly complex already and not that pleasant compared to other pieces by Ligeti. I think that Musica Ricercata is way more accessible, as well as the six bagatelles for wind quintet (which reuse material from Musica Ricercata)

Imagine someone practicing on a very bad piano that has some keys that don’t work anymore or that keep getting stuck after playing them. An otherwise fluent sounding piece will become very clunky. That’s the image this piece is trying to evoke.

the same way you read any music, hold down the silent notes (diamond noteheads) in the left hand and play the rest normally - the small noteheads will not sound as the left hand is already holding these notes

It's an etude, which is a piece for improving or showing off technique, so naturally it's very complicated. This makes it difficult to listen to, but personally I like it. It's an acquired musical taste.

The pattern includes some of the keys that are held down, so those don't make a sound when they're played; there's just a blank space there. @@SuperheroChuckYou are right, there is an idea, but it isn`t a musical one, This is the same as you will find in 12-tone-music, there is a kind of system, but it ignores musical sense. Pattern of piano keys are a system, but these patterns don`t produce music, the< are patterns of keys.
@MatheusKulik5 ай бұрын
@@Klimperenie what do you mean by "musical idea"?
@SuperheroChuck5 ай бұрын
@@Klimperenie Like I said, it's basically a percussion piece. The music is in the rhythm. The middle section with all the asymmetrical meter calls back to the dance rhythms of the Hungarian folk music that was so influential on Ligeti's work (and Bartok's before him). The ideas here are musical, whether or not you say so. Believe it or not, I generally agree with your assessment of the 12-tone system. It tends to produce music that is unintelligible. But that's not what's going on here. This piece is very intelligible, if you treat it as a percussion piece rather than expecting it to have conventional melodies and harmonies. Whether or not you *like* it is a matter of taste, but saying it's "not music" is pretty dumb.
