After fighting issues of un burned trash left behind and or tending to a burn barrel for hours I needed a barrel that would burn fast and hot. I also needed a barrel that didn't hold ash and cause the barrel to rust out so fast... We found the fix to all these issues in this video and i was shocked to see how it turned out.

A well used Burn Barrel! I grew up in the city, but we were allowed to have burn barrel's when I was a kid. Always loved at the end of the day when we were allowed to burn. Then the city changed the ordinance and no more burning was allowed. Miss those days...You're a funny man, Mike!

I love the barrel burners. My dad always had one during my childhood years of the 50's to mid 60's. There was a time when almost every American living outside the big cities had one. In those days everyone left the bottom in the barrel which was a mistake as you know. That updraft from an open bottom (with grate) makes for a superior burning barrel.

For sure , removing the bottom is a must to get a good burn.

My barrel has few holes and still burns great. Maybe because I am in FL and burn lots of palm fronds and they are such great start up. Also my barrel bottom rusted out so I just have a fire screen type of grill on the bottom. Don't really need to weld it, it just sits on it and then I shovel the ash to the garden or to the dump. Its seated on large bricks and I always wet under the barrel with lots of hose water, and all around the barrel. Works for me OK. Thanx this was very helpful, used to do just burn pile but this feels much safer because contained.

I love my burning barrels but please remove the plastics before you dump them in there. Plastic is very toxic and can cause you and your children some major health issues. Burning plastic releases toxic gases like dioxins, furans, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls into the atmosphere, and poses a threat to your health, vegetation and animals around you. Please don't take my comment as offensive but I didn't know if you were aware of this. Keep the videos coming, love your stuff! ~John

In my experience, a burn barrel will rust out at the bottom unless the barrel has a waterproof lid that is kept on when burning is not being done. Rainwater mixing with ashes on the barrel floor produces an alkaline slurry which initiates corrosion very rapidly.

I stopped shooting mine to make holes. Even if you are a great shot; the exit holes can go through the actual rings of the barrel. That causes the barrels not to last as long. Having said that, it’s a LOT more fun then using any other tool and makes for a much better video! Thanks for sharing. I also like the freedom twig!!

One thing I noticed when you put the stuff in is you burn bottles which is fine so do I, but as an experiment hold a lighter to a bottle with water in it, it will char and heat up the water but not let the water out, so it will expand and explode so just be careful and make sure all liquids are removed or just take the lids off before you throw em in the bag to be safe

Grate idea :) The airflow up though is the best to get a thorough burn. When we bought our place there were 3 cement tiles left and they set for 30 years, one day I thought I would try to set one up on end to burn in. I notched it at the bottom so I could clean ashes out with a shovel, it has worked fine for about 10 years on just the one tile. The steel barrels do not last long, not made they way they used to be, what is? My neighbor cut a rectangular hole in the side of his new barrel to let air in and shovel out the ashes, seems to be doing well,

Can u say approximately what was the burning time it took to completely form that ash ? A rough idea? Usually how long a burn barrel will be on fire so that the waste can form the ash. I understand that it depends on the amount and the type of waste that we add to the burn barrel. But still what will be an average approximate time it can take if we add regular waste without much moisture content ?
@SunnySlopeHomestead
@SunnySlopeHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
It would depend on amount and contents of said trash but to say your average 15gal trash bag with normal house trash and not a lot of food scraps a burn time to ash would be 1 hour 12 minutes 18 seconds 😆 Really I started it around 6pm and it burned all night to ash. But the fire was a low glow with in 15-20 minutes
