I think that makes a lot of difference to the experience when you're relaxing and enjoying your train setup. I happen to be very lucky in that my wife is an artist and as I raised the idea of trains and modeling her ears pricked up and one of the first things she said after I got through my speil, is "village scenery". So I think this is going to work very well. Thanks for the great tips!

Great idea Jimmy. Quick and easy and effective. You should have a look at some Bob Ross videos for more great ideas for backdrops. Also for colours. His distant mountains tend to be purpleish. This is why I keep coming back. Quick and easy and it works.

This is what I did for one of my back drops. It works really nice to make the real sky’s of the Pacific North West. That is darling grey skies, rather than blue sunny skies

Great idea Jimmy. Your video is by far the most straightforward I have seen. Simple, concise... I plan to use a 3" roller to do this instead of spray, and vary the colors as I choose. Yesterday I stopped at my local Ace and picked up some 8oz paint samples to vary the hill colors a bit. Sky blue is down and dry so I will continue today. I'm using masonite and have one piece 24" x 96" and one piece 24" x 48" around 2 sides of my layout (n scale). I'll try to post a picture when I am done. Ron

Well after some experimentation and painting I find this solution really not very realistic. I did find something much more to my liking on eBay (sky, hills, peaks) in 24x96 format and bought 2, for not much more than the cost of the paint I used here. Decent idea Jimmy, just not for an untalented artist like me.

Not much of a painter? Not good at landscaping? Hah! Jimmy… that’s a GREAT background! Everything you did worked out perfectly. The template idea for the hills is great. The only thing that I would do differently is maybe add a few different shaped mountains in the background to break up the landscape… otherwise, thanks for the tip, I was debating on what material I would use as my background. Although since I have a heavy industrial look, I was thinking about a city backdrop. Thanks again

For us Brits grey primer would do for the base coat, we don't often see a blue sky !!!

Using this technique I think you could get 3 more hill shapes by cutting out on the other 3 sides. Then you can flip over the cardboard to get 4 more shapes.

Any advice for blending joints in backdrops? I have one section that will be over ten feet long and since the largest Masonite panels is 4' by 8' I will have to patch in a couple of feet. Overall I will have a continuous backdrop of 23 feet on my G-shaped layout. Previously, I hand painted with craft acrylic paints before but that can be mind-numbing. I will have to try this. There are plenty of options… first thing is to use a good tape along the back of the seam, if you plan on making the backdrop permanent try using putty on the joints… or if it’s available you can purchase a piece of hardboard siding at your home center they come in 16’ pieces. 8”-10”-12”and 16” widths, you just have to look for the smooth variety. Most is sold with a wood grain. Good luck
