Way, way back in the day when my college buddies and I would go to the track we'd quote this scene whenever someone was stalling at the ticket window. And you gotta love the clerk: Ten seconds to post and he decides it's the appropriate time to explain gambling vernacular.

That’s Bill “showbiz” Popfinger as the driver who went “water skiing”. Still alive today, he holds the distinction of being the only trainer ever to win a race every year at Pompano Park in Florida, where this was filmed. The track being called “Hoover Downs” was an inside joke about how racetracks “vacuum “ up their patrons money.

It actually ran about 10 seconds over on the post time. At the 15 second call it was off by about 1 second, but at "not more bets" 40 seconds had past. Just sayin'.

It’s a fixed race. The driver is part of the fix. They provided a false tip and got everyone to bet on the win.
