Easy no sew no glue no staple DIY sketchbooks!

Pretty sketchbooks are everywhere, but they can be intimidating can't they? So what if you could have a pretty one that took the pressure away? That's what my mission was with this DIY!
You see, if we can make a sketchbook that doesn't involve glue, sewing or staples then we have the option of removing pages (if we really hate what we drew) or even removing them for sharing purposes, such as framing a picture or putting it onto a scanner for a digital copy.
It's so easy! Just grab whatever you want to use as a cover, get some art paper (why not make a mixed paper sketchbook?), trim if needed, put it into the cover and hold together with an elastic! I find that thin, colourful hair elastics work particularly well, as does elastic bands. If you don't have any then ribbon, string or even paper clips might be a solution.

Yes!! This is the easiest thing I have created! Already made 5 and I will give them to all of my friends because they are always complaining about the cost of actual sketchbooks. This is so cheap and if you are on a budget you can make these.

Gia Crowner In my country its just 4 dollars a sketchbook its cheap soft just and fair because it has 210 pages of big bond paper. and when its on sale its only freakin $3.5 dollars well uhmm 200 amounts of paper is actually the same price as a sketchbook 4 dollars but the sketchbook has 10 more so yeah XD I just buy dem lol

Something useful that I've seen for making a sketchbook with tape was taking some unfolded paper and sticking them together along long edges (something that I saw in a diy video for making revision notes with flashcards, but I've found it's useful for making sketchbooks too! 🤩🤩 (Also, for watercolor or mixed media paper, I would personally bind it with duct tape since it'd be more durable than most washi tape or regular sticky tape).

Yes! I've had a habit of saving birthday cards since was little, but I never had anything to do them! They'd make great sketchbook covers! And I've got lots of crappy hairbands that I can't use anymore. Thanks so much, I've wanted to make my own sketchbook for ages, and now it actually seems achievable!

absolutely love this. one thing I hate about sketchbooks is they're too bulky to take with me most of the time, and I'm guilty of throwing away most things I draw and ruining the binding from tearing out pages.

I love the fact that you can remove and insert pages easily with these methods! This way I can take sketches I like out, trace them on some other paper and put the sketches back in the book. Or if I messed up, I can just take the page out. It's an infinite sketchbook! I'll definitely try this tomorrow! Thanks! :D

Oh mine was so easy to make :D I found a cute christmas card with a puppy on it, it was perfect! I cut some simple sketching paper and put everything together with a rubber band! It's a perfect, cute little sketchbook, I really like it and I already began with my first drawing in it :D I love that I can draw more freely in this sketchbook because I don't need to be afraid of messing up :D

All of these are excellent ideas! But there is one way to use the washy tape successfully, and that is if you don’t fold the papers in half and you just lay individual paper side-by-side and tape them down with the washy tape, then fold and repeat. This creates a lay flat book that will also have taped off edges that you can also remove when you are done with your watercolor painting. That’s what I’m going to do anyway! :-) I will try some of your other techniques with smaller sketchbooks I really like the hair tie idea. Thank you!

Had so much fun making this! A sketch book with unicorns on it was 11 pounds at The Works , but 100 sheets of rainbow paper was 1 pound, plus 10 cute clips with unicorns on that I used as clasps for 80p at my local hairdresser's. And plus that, I got 13 puffy stickers too for 50p! And plus PLUS that, I got some brushes and paints for 5 pounds ,with a little holder. So, I got a giant art book that was super cute, for 7.20 if I'm not so much mistaken!!!!! Thanks for teaching me how, or I would have blown all of my spending money on a book- and not to mention, I still have some stickers, clips and most of my paint and paper left.

thank you so much for this video! the prices of sketchbooks in my country is usually expensive (and not many pages too) , and kinda hard to get at where i live so its a hassle really. i find the elastic band/hair tie technique really useful to bind papers in huge quantities so now i dont have to waste time and money to buy sketchbooks again and again..anyways bless you for making such a helpful video!!

I love those ideas/ways on how to do that because whenever I buy a notebook for me it always gets used by other people in my house and I don't have a stapler and I rarely have tape or glue in my house so in glad u made this video and I think u should make more videos like this one

I found that the paperclip wasn't very effective - just the elastic works best! Paperclips are good for holding the pages down though.

Don't compare yourself - everyone is different. Look back at old artists in the past and you'll see that every style is different - some look realistic, others don't, but they are ALL unique to the artist. You art will be unique, and you shouldn't try to be like anyone else. Just do your own thing and OWN IT! :D You can do it! Just go for it - the more you practice and fill up sketchbooks the more confident you will get.

It would, but for that you would need larger elastics or the book would just crumple in on itself. One idea is to cut up several elastic bands and tie them together to make a longer band. Of course, if you are using string or ribbon or what have you it won't matter as you can cut to length :)
