Got Affinity just now and downloading. Was looking around for specifically this usecase that has been kind of a nightmare to do... using ANY program that doesn't use procedurally generated textures. I honestly wasn't hoping for much. But this is amazing. This puts handmaking normal maps not only possible, but it looks extremely accessible. So like. I can paint the heightmap underneath, carving it out. And see the result immediately because it's an effect layer. Brilliant. Like.. what else? Do we get to interpolate colors by their separate values across color spaces? I'm half joking, but now I've got my hopes up that there is at least some way to create plugins that'd enable this! As for why there are patterns on the normal map. My guess is that the resolution is not good enough on the heightmap. If it were RAW, it might give some better results. But honestly, I don't even mind it all that much. I don't know what to say. Thank you. Your video and affinity have done more for me than Photoshop has in years, and I've used it since my early teens over 15 years ago, so it's not that I simply don't know my way around it. Again. You could use a gradient map on a duplicate texture layer underneath and then add the lighting effects on top.
