I truly appreciate that you are gripping the kon far down each one. I grow so weary of twirling videos where they are gripped near the cord. Also, those are very long sticks!

Perfection is static and ultimately boring - it's the struggle that makes us human, and karate interesting 🙇🏻‍♀️

That's why the two of you are such an awesome team! Part of the reason why KZbin has a strong appeal over television is that the little mistakes here and there make the whole presentation relatable to the viewer-sometimes as if we're learning along with you. :-)

Our blushes, good sir! You know, I've never thought about the very human aspect of YT, but then we think about how lots of big actors put blooper reels at the end of their movies. Honestly, we really are in many ways a scrappy underdog channel with low production values and flawed instructors, but it has truly brought amazing people into our karate circle, and that matters above all else 🙇🏻‍♀️

The Young Lords Party in NYC during the late sixties/early seventies made this weapon famous, so much so, that the nunchaku was banned in New York State until a couple of years ago. They developed a very practical method for using them against the police, hence, why they were banned.

That sent me down a wonderful history rabbit hole - what a delightful fact! And I see the law was overturned as late as 2018! I actually tried to find wooden nunchaku to add to our affiliate program, but Amazon only sells the rubber ones. Strange place to draw a line, but anyway. Many of our European subscribers told us on the last nunchaku video that they are illegal to even own. Thank you for leaving such a great comment, and for watching our video 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

Kobudo is something the serious karateka should learn a little of - not necessarily always with grading in mind, but it helps with the understanding of karate, and also strengthens some aspects of our karate techniques. One Goju-ryu dojo that also taught kobudo was the Uehara-Ko's dojo...Btw Matayoshi also learnt karate with Chojun Miyagi Sensei. But many Goju-ryu Sensei's do a variety of kobudo weapons...Tonfa sai and Bo etc require some body mechanics which we deploy in karate too, twisting of arms, wrists, etc Kime, using body torso and body mass, CG manipulation etc ... gives us more insight into our karate techniques. I like this Nanchaku video, it's very down to earth, solid practical techniques, no fancy Bruce-Lee nonsense - in fact most actual kata fr Chinese/Okinawan schools are similarly simple and down to earth. In fact the tricky thing about the Nanchaku happens after it strikes the target - if your arm stops moving, the Nanchaku bounces back towards you ... That's why in Nanchaku kata, when striking, your arms goes through the full swing, usually downwards using the whole arm, that would bring it down and reduce the rebound. See 14:10-14:13...If you take three steps forward, each step with a swing of the Nanchaku, and if each strike connects with something and the weapon bounces back at you, while you are stepping forward, it becomes quite something else., The other way to arrest the rebound is to pull back after contact wide and away from your body so that the Nanchaku is behind your back (over your upper arm or shoulder)...such as 14:29...these are not meant to be fancy Bruce-Lee type moves, but simply ways of controlling the rebound of the weapon.

Zoe here - I actually hadn't thought of the rebound, so I think I'll practice on our orange dude this week and learn how to deal with it bouncing off people! Bruce Lee may have helped popularize martial arts, but he didn't like being an instructor, and his nunchaku flashiness haunts us still. The dojo kids are really enjoying nunchaku, and it really is helping us keep them engaged when they haven't been able to do contact for 18 months. Thank you for this kind, and truly informative comment 🙇🏻‍♀️ 🙇🏻‍♀️ 🙇🏻‍♀️ 🙇🏻‍♀️

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre Bouncing off people, bouncing off objects used to block your weapon....etc. That's why Okinawa Nanchaku usually have a shorter rope...but a lot of modern Nanchaku have a longer chain, which allows for many flashy moves, but the rebound becomes more erratic and the weapon becomes a problem for the user.

Finally, I have an answer as to why there are nunchaku with super long chains! Ours in the dojo have super short ropes, and we make sure the kids use foam ones, because even grown-ass adults knock themselves on the head while learning.
