A sign mean you know He hear. He will gave it to you a fish not a snake. A fish can be right away or the next day. Or 3 month from now. It depend if of You?. When you need It?. Why you need It. God answer my prayers not my ways His ways but He does always answers. Not to let me discouraged. People who cannot hear from God cannot know how He answers our prayers. I can teach you. Just ask. Don't give up when you ask.

Asking mean it is important to me. It is also important too to The Lord Jesus. So if you ask for a fish. He will gave you a fish. He may not gave it to you Today, because to get you have to believe He will gave it. Faith mean believe. So if you want Him to say He heard you ask Him to gave you a sign.

What God teach me about religion is we are bound to man ways. Relationships is bound to God's mind and how He wants us to do things. We can only do that when we surrender to God. He then became our God instead of our church or our pastor. He then became our Pastors. Our guide. Our God not our religion or people.

At that point I would possibly change it up and and say "Good job for asking the right person"... then turn the attention to the rest of the students and say "Did you guys hear that? When GOD gives us a challenge on our path He expects us to turn towards Him for help". Then I would proceed to help the student with paper.
