You know what? I’m working on new decor for my home and have watched dozens of pillow tutorials. You are, simply, the best! Your videos are clear, extremely detailed, and easy to understand. Your video close-ups are well done and essential. And your tricks and tips are great. Thank you so much for taking the time to educate us! I wish I could send you photos of the corded and flange pillows I’ve made using your techniques. It would be great if you made a ruffled pillow with invisible zipper video, although I’ve been able to manage by extrapolating from your other videos. I look forward to your next lesson.

Now that I've watched your videos I don't want to watch anyone else! You get right to the point and your tips and methods are the best! I wondered if you might do a video on sewing a pillow with brush fringe? I rely on my piping foot to guide me with a corded pillow but I've never worked with fringe before. Thanks for everything! Just a question. On how a square pillow is not square, you taper the corners. Assuming for the flange you actually sew square corners but how about the inside flange section where the pillow insert goes - is that seam tapered? Thanks so much - you're the best instructor out there.
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare

Thank you for watching my videos and for the good question. The answer is that it depends! Pillows like the one in this video where it’s all one piece on the front and has an overlap back I do sometimes taper the outer edge a little, then follow that same line, inset 2” to make the flange. On pillows with a contrasting separate flange OR on fabrics with a stripe or plaid design I usually do not taper. Sometimes the pointy corners are a better look than a torqued flange or a pattern that looks funny from a taper. I hope that was an understandable explanation!

Thank you for this video! I'm redoing my sofa cushions, they have that slight extended ''piping'' or edging to them we are seeing in more modern sofas, but I wanted more of a flowy, longer flared edge similar to this (and also did not want it to be super floppy, so this is perfect). How washable/durable would this be on an actual sofa seat cushion? With the batting for stiffening, I mean.
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 8 күн бұрын
Ah, that's always a tricky thing. Most batting made from polyester is deemed washable, but the face fabric is most likely made of other fibers, like cotton, linen, a cotton blend, a polyester blend, or even acrylic, so washing can create problems. If you think you're going to want to wash it, make sure your face fabric is washable, always prewash the fabric, and then wash the finished cover on delicate, and dry flat. Still no guarantees, but that's the safest way to go!

@ASquarePillowIsntSquare Ай бұрын
I'm sorry I don't really understand your questions. I'm sure what you mean by "how about opposite?" Regarding the custom insert, are you asking about making an insert to fit an existing cover, or how to measure the existing insert for a new cover?

The high loft quilt batting that you recommended is no longer available. I am new to this and would appreciate your recommendation. Do I just buy a high loft quilt batting? Would any high loft work? Thanks. PB
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 2 ай бұрын
It doesn’t need to be high loft - I’d say 3/8”-1/2” max will do the job. I would think any polyester quilt batting should work. Cotton is softer and might not be as stiff. Hope that helps :)

@ASquarePillowIsntSquare

I topstitch the flange on the right side as a last step. I don't have a weight for you, but you don't really want anything thick. Just enough to add body.

Easy! Make the pillow cover the same way but instead of adding 2” all around just make it 1/4” bigger all around and topstitch 1/4” from the finished edges. It will look like 1/4” welt!

Most home dec drapery weight fabric works best. Stay away from thin, loosely woven, stiff, or thick fabric like upholstery fabric and you should be fine.

thank you just what I was looking for. Instead of an envelope back, can an invisible zipper be placed at the top near the flange? I've seen zippers in the middle of the back, but I want to embroider on both sides of the pillow so the zipper needs to be on the edge . thanks!!
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare Жыл бұрын
On this style the zipper must be placed away from the flange, so the correct way to do it is to piece the back and install a zipper with an overlap flap. The best place to do this is a couple of inches above the flange at the bottom of the pillow, where it is least noticeable.

I would like to make a cover like this for a body pillow (48"x16") that will be used as a decorative bed throw pillow. It'll be a challenge to insert the pillow but that won't need to happen often. Would you recommend that the opening still be placed in the center, or do you think an off-center opening would make for easier loading?
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 8 ай бұрын
On long pillows like this I make the overlap at about the 30% point. On a 48” pillow I’d probably put it at 14-16” from the end of the sewn area

2'' on the right and 2" on the left, so add 4" for width, then again, 2" on top and 2" on the bottom, so add 4" for height. Total 8", but 4" in each direction.
