Me and my friend won a competition by just clampping every stick together in 5 big "logs" with the sticks standing sidewards(like you did in the beggining), and topping it with more sticks creating a base for the weight ENGINEERING

Yes any glue will work, hot glue just allows you to make it more quickly. But hot glue isn't actually that strong.
