For paracord skeins, I have an adjustable jig (1x2” board with one fixed peg and a couple holes for one movable peg to make different lengths) that I usually use to make figure 8s, then wrap it with the tail end of the cord so they neatly fit the length of a Tupperware box. But, the alternating loop has been my standard go-to tangle/kink-free method for ropes, extension cords, and hoses for years. One of my bigger pet peeves is when people wrap cords/extension cords (especially when they’re my cords/extension cords) in tight overhand loops, like wrapping them around the palm and elbow, so tightly that it un-twists the gradually twisted wires inside of the protective sheathing and deforms/warps the cord which makes them an absolute nightmare to wrap up correctly (like this) without creating a bird’s nest of twisted tangled cord and they no longer lay flat on the floor making them even more of a tripping hazard.

For long ropes and cords, I make the loops 5ft (or 1.5meter) in length so I may easily see the lengths.
