When I was a little girl, my mom made Barbie clothes for mine and my sister's dolls. We had wedding dresses, coats, dresses, etc. They were beautiful, and she took so much time with them. We didn't have much, but I had a great childhood, because my mother made it special.

My sister was 16 yrs older than I and when I turned 7 she gave me a Ginny doll with a full wardrobe she had made. Several of the fabrics were scraps from maternity tops she had made when carrying her 1st baby ( born 4 mos after my 7th Bday). Sweet fabrics. Tiny little collars and waistbands and pockets. Even a tutu with seed pearl trim from her wedding gown which she had made. I still have all of the clothes and the doll. I'm 76. Ginny is 69 lol.

Mary, you are right, sewing during the winter months is my favorite past time. My Mom and I have been sewing since October. We made Pjs for all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren for Christmas. Since Christmas we have been making a quilt for my baby brother and his wife. This makes the third quilt we have made together in three years. So much fun sitting with my Mom and sewing and she tell she me stories of her childhood which I love. My Mom was 99 this past December. She taught me to sew when I was 9 years old and I have made everything from baby clothes to ceiling to floor silk drapes. I love you cat window seat. I wondered why you were putting a steel plate on the board. Genius. Ann from Va.

I hope your are either writing down or recording these stories. I have decided to do that with the stories my Mom is telling me, she just turned 85 and I all of a sudden realized if I DON'T do that, all of this family history will be lost.

@@laurancurtis5669 My goodness Lauren, I thought I was the only person who spends the whee hours of the morning awake and on the IPad. Mom and I have been writing down these stories for years. I compiled most of them several years ago on the computer and copied them into a journal. I made a cover and titled it “ Through the Years”. My Mom also writes poem and I included all of them in this journal. It has been a long time since she has written any things but I so enjoy reading them and her stories every chance I can. I have copied this journal for several members of the family. Ann from Va.

Hi Mary! Great video. Just a tip, the reason your hot pad binding had pleats is because you cut it on the straight of grain. If you cut your strips at a 45 degree angle on the bias it will have a lot give and conform to the rounded edges and that won’t happen. ❤

Sewing is a lost art. My mom taught me to sew when I was a young girl and I made costumes. I eventually went to school for Interior design and later learned to make custom window treatments, bed coverings, pillows, table runners, and other items. Thanks for your inspiration today. I’m gonna find a sewing project now.

This brings back memories. We didn’t have much money when we were little. Womens lib hadn’t really occurred so mum was at home. She snagged some small gingham fabric in a bin, one pink one light green. She bought a pattern for Barbie sized outfits and got busy. She had an old Singer treadle machine with the bullet shaped bobbin. She made dresses, head scarves, pants, pop tops, shorts. All in the gingham so you could mix and match. It was fiddly work and she did it after we were in bed. It was fabulous. I still have that machine and the cabinet it folds down into with the iron fretwork legs.

I have taken up sewing again. I learned as a young girl from my mother. This year I made pillows with the word "friendship" for my girlfriends and "family" for my two sisters. I'm so grateful for the ability to do this. I like the idea of the table runner. I have a square table that is impossible to buy a runner that really looks right. John did a fine job - thank him for giving us a chuckle about hiding nice boards from you!

Both my grandmother & my sewed, but I never learned. So, even though I've sewn simple baby quilts for many years, I'd never ventured out beyond that. I'm turning 65 in a few months & decided last year to teach myself to sew. There are a few lovely ladies like yourself on KZbin who share easy sewing projects explaining each step to make it easier for beginning sewists. I haven't ventured out beyond pillow covers, table runners, card wallets, curtains & such as of yet, but there are so many simple things you can make that honestly looks store bought for a fraction of the cost. Thank you for sharing. ❤

I really like how you take a “terrifying” skirt pattern and make it not so terrifying. I worked in different sewing factories from age 15 to age 37. God blessed me with a beautiful little girl at age 37. At age 39 went to technical college, along with 3 part-time jobs. Did this for 3 1/2 years and graduated. Stayed home for a couple years and then went back to work as a overnight customer service representative. Stayed there until April 2011 and had heart attack. Went back to work at public library, significant pay decrease and no benefits, but was at home with daughter. Worked there until April 28, 2011. Had 1st open heart surgery on May 3, 2011. No work. Had 2nd open heart June 28, 2013. Was up walking halls with a walker that same day! ❤❤❤🎉🎉

I love your sewing videos Mary! And I especially love hearing about your childhood. I’ve been sewing since I was 9, when I was in 4-H. I learned to sew my own clothes, and I now sew for 3 generations. My favorite thing is to sew doll clothes for my grandchildren! I especially loved watching the birds at your feeder! We don’t have red cardinals where I live, so seeing them was a real treat. So amused at John “hiding” your pine boards! 😊 Keep the videos coming; you are such an inspiration!

Dad was in the Air Force; when I was young we moved from the city my parents grew up in to Anchorage Alaska one December. With seven kids and a recent move, we didn't have much money for Christmas, so Mom made pink and blue flannel baby doll pajamas and nightgowns. One of my sisters and I often talk about those very dear gifts. I learned to sew making baby doll and Barbie doll clothes for my younger sisters.

This video is so reminiscent of my mom. She was always sewing. Either doing alterations for people , making our doll and Barbie clothes, our clothes and then even my wedding dress. I’m so sad that I didn’t have the passion for sewing back then. She gifted me a sewing machine for my bridal shower and I was only ever able to make the very basics. Now I struggle with that machine not knowing how to adjust tension, the bobbin settings etc. I want to look for sewing classes near me or just start watching on KZbin. Thanks for sharing Mary!💕

My mom gave me a tiny suitcase filled with Barbie clothes she'd made, and my friends and I had endless hours playing with the dolls and clothes. I had one Barbie and one Midge, and my best friend had Skipper and Ken. Perfect for an afternoon of imaginary fun. I eventually got the Barbie convertible but didn't like that the doors wouldn't open. :) Flash forward to present day, and I have a black cat who loves to sit in any window, so I love the seat you made for your kitties. One year for Christmas I bought my daughter 3 of the the larger size strawberry shortcake dolls lemon, peach and strawberry!! I made her outfits , in solid teal, yellow and pink colors and each of those same colors in gingham check. I made blankets, and all kinds of clothing, everything in I made I made in both fabrics for each doll. Bought a mini baby crib that fit all 3 dolls. My daughter is 49 and guess which dolls she saved for her daughter if she had any!! She had 3 boys so 2 boys are married and maybe a little granddaughter will get to enjoy them! I’m thinking she probably remembers that Christmas above all others!!

I learnt to sew when I was 8. My grandmother gave me her Pfaff treadle machine. It lived in my bedroom so I had no choice. I used to make my dolls clothes and decorated my room and then progessed to making my own clothes. When I went to boarding school I only had weekly lessons. My mother left my father and sold my machine to the local tailor. It took me another 5 years before I bought my own Pfaff 1212 which set me off making my own clothes again. I got into recycling old ties into skirts and waistcoats for money. At one stage I was making costumes for plays. I replaced the Pfaff (i still regret it) with an Elna Carina. It has some fantastic decorative stitches which enhanced my bedding. In the last few years I have inherited 2 Berninas (1942 and 1970 vintage), 2 pfaffs (1963 and 1985) and a husqvarna (1959). Such diversity in use. Not a computerised one among them!

I'd give anything to have that time back and learn more. She was a great seamstress. She made several beauty pageant dresses for me, which blows my mind to think about now. She'd spend HOURS at that sewing machine. Mary, you're so talented and so good at everything you do. Thank you for sharing your life and your beautiful home and talents with us. I just stumbled on the channel and love the laid back style you have. I've been sewing since I was 3 and I taught my best friend and my own daughter to sew. I got the best compliment this weekend... my daughter informed me that I'd taught her to sew well enough that she has the self confidence (something she really struggles with along with anxiety) to sew without my help and doesn't need the guide sheet for her project either as she can figure out how things go together now too! She's now teaching her girlfriend to sew as well. She's a 5th generation seamstress in the family now. As for my best friend we taught her daughter to sew and she's picked up on quilting and clothing. It's a good thing I have a large stash of fabric to use! I need to go back and watch more of your videos for more ideas of things to make!

Sometimes she would make her own patterns from newspaper. Mary, my mom always wanted a Bernina machine. Loved todays video.

Hi Mary, lovely sewing projects with great fabrics. For future reference the binding needed to be cut from the fabric diagonally on the bias (i.e., corner to corner) it would have then laid flat on both sides as you sewed it. Lovely results 💕

Awe, I just love that he recorded his part, well done John! Mary, you have a lovely home and I love watching the birds in your videos. Would you consider recreating that bird feeder? I have been "hoarding " scrap wood and I am wanting to try to make one like yours!! As always, your creations are beautiful. Blessings!! 🙏🐦❄☃

Ty for the video. When I was a little girl I wanted to try my mom’s sewing machine but she said I’d get hurt. My friend introduced me to a sewing machine a few years ago so I took up sewing in my 40s. I’m 50 now and I love pressing on that pedal, seeing things I’ve made on my own with pride and joy. Ty for the wonderful video. I liked and subscribed 😊

Thank you, Mary. I've never seen a mitered edge done like that before. I usually do it the difficult way. 'Sew Simple', really. 😉

I need to do a road trip to your neck of the woods, Mary, for some of those lovely cottage style print fabrics. There used to be a fabulous fabric store in Gastonia NC called Mary Jo's Cloth Store. Sadly she passed away and her children had no interest in continuing the store. She carried everything from quilting cotton to beaded wedding fabrics to fabulous upholstery fabrics. I never left that store empty-handed. I've been sewing for 62 years although now it's mostly clothing for my niece, curtains, pillows, and shopping totes. I make my totes with French seams - very easy to do and makes for a very strong and neatly finished bag.

Love the projects. I remember making dresses for my younger cousins when I was 10-11 . I've always enjoyed sewing. I recently bought fabric to make new tiers. Tell John he did a great job in front of the camera.❤

Great video, Mary! I get in the mood to sew about once a year…this time of year! I am making American Girl doll bedding for a bed from IKEA for an American Girl doll that I am gifting to my youngest granddaughter for her 9th birthday next month. The doll was my daughter’s, and she is at the AG doll hospital being refurbished…I am having such a good time with this project! Sewing is such a satisfying hobby (most of the time)! I just love fabric and have so much that I’ve purchased through the years for various projects…some of which I have actually gotten finished! I’ve been sewing since I was about 8 years old…not often, but enough to remember how to do certain projects! TY for sharing! Cindi (from WV) 😊

I just laughed out loud when you said "and he even talks!" He did a good job! And loved seeing the cardinals at your bird feeder. You had 2 loved ones visiting you that day!

Thank you for the sewing projects. I haven’t sown for a few years now and you have given me inspiration to go shopping for some spring fabrics and start sewing.

When I was little, my mom made most of my Barbie clothes. Wedding dresses, gowns, skirts, faux fur coats, pants, jackets, lingerie, shorts, halters, etc. She even made me some beautiful bedding with ruffles and throw rugs. I still have most of them too and I'm going to be 60 this year. I've also made a few items. Now my granddaughters are playing with them all.

My late grandmother was a professional seamstress. I learned a lot from her and did a lot of sewing when I was a young girl, but haven’t sewn in years now. Loved all the sewing projects especially the cat bed.

Can’t miss those beautiful Cardinals , i had 3 of them in my tree and at my feeders the other day . In Germany 🇩🇪 where I grew up we had sewing ,cooking ,knitting, crocheting and embroidery in school as a class , it was pretty basic and I did make curtains and pillow cases for my house later on but my passion was always knitting and crocheting . You are so very talented in all you do , greetings from a very snowy Massachusetts

Scrap projects are so much fun. I spent an entire decade using scraps to make lavender sachets that were sold on Ebay. I still make them for myself and as gifts. There's nothing like a lavender sachet under the pillow to help with sleep, or a few in a basket near an open window in warm weather.
