Easy Steps for Tiling a Window in a Shower

🌟Tile Cutting around Window🌟
A U-cut around a window will be the toughest cut of this project 😁
First step is to determine the overhang needed around window for the type of edging you plan to use
In this project we are using a standard Rondec metal edging
Ideally it's best to allow the wall tile to overhang the edging of window frame by 1/16"
This will provide plenty of room for setting tile around the inside frame of window
In this particular situation, the window was not 100% centered within the tub surround
We added a 1/4" of overhang to try to balance this unevenness
On the right side of window we only allowed the tile to overhang 1/16"
Be sure to set the spacers needed for grout joint before measuring down for the sill cut
I would recommend overhanging the sill by at least a 1/4"
This way you have plenty of room to build up the sill tile to meet metal edging easily
Square off the markings of the U-cut
Cut side legs of U-cut on wet saw
If you are using a table top type of wet saw, you'll need to cut the bottom U-cut with a grinder
This is where a plunge cutting like the dewalt wet saw makes this a lot easier
A good grinder blade like the Montolit CGX blade will be worth the expense 👍 - amzn.to/45bffvm
This will take a steady hand to cut nicely
Don't feel bad if you have to repeat this process a few times
This is a tough cut to make 👊

Best way to check your cut is to use a piece of metal edging and evaluate the straightness of cut
Check all reveals around window with metal edging
I prefer to have at least a 1/2" - 3/4" reveal for 3/8" thick tile
Keep tiles aligned with one another around window by referencing the metal edging
When cutting smaller pieces of tile on a table wet saw, you have to be slow and steady
Its easy to chip edges of tile
This is again where a better tile saw makes a world of difference 👍
If you plan to have a border within the window area, I would recommend setting the edging before measuring & installing the border 👍

Dryfit edging & pay attention to levelness & evenness with tiles
Apply thinset to edged of tile to securely set metal edging
If metal edging is not fully embedded, cracked grout joints can happen

Cut down border to desired width with utility knife
Glass does require a wet saw to cut nicely
With the Schluter Kerdi Band backing, you can now add as much thinset as needed to keep border even with wall tile 👍
Embed & tamp in place with a grout float
Horseshoe spacers to shim out border
Seriously the easiest way to set a mosaic border 😄
At the ceiling, I recommend keeping a 1/16" - 1/8" space
This will help create a better caulking joint & give movement space for wall to ceiling
Metal edging around a window can be challenging
It's a fairly unforgiving type of trim...
Pencil trim can be a bit of an easier edging (if it matches your design)

Hey BRT, got any tips, tricks or "well kept secrets" about what to use when marking on glossy tile and cutting with a wet saw? I know there is a Pica pencil and it claims that line will stay even if water comes in contact. Have you tried that? 👀 I also know that sharpie wont stick either. Tried adhering tape optimistically on tile and drawing a line on it. 🤪 It was not a match for water and the blade either.

That is one thing I need to test and try out. I struggle with that too. Some tiles can be stained by pencil or sharpies…have had problems before Good question. Will start trying things out 👍

Me too. Just assumed the pencil would come off so kept on tiling. Trying to clean at the end and I scrubbed my ass off, haze remover, straight acid and I couldn't get all of it off. Luckily the worst spots were kinda hidden but it could have been a disaster and it's just pencil.

@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher I know that someone like you (or Sal) who does such volume of tile in the meantime go by the feel and eye coordination and all is good but for us tile-infants we do struggle. Landberg made a video a year or so ago about Pica and it seems like a miracle scriber. Those Germans you know. Might wanna give that a shot. I also do think that RamBoard's seam tape would be able to actually stay put while going through the wet saw. Also its surface is perfect for any kind of a pen, pencil or fine tip sharpie. Will test that on my next backsplash.

Try Milwaukee inkzall but use the red or blue ones. The black stains the tile especially white tile. I use those for my glossy tile and it stays while I cut with water.

Great video! What are your tips for avoid chips at the very end if your cuts? I have found the slightly bigger overhead blade saws tend to a better job at preventing that. Thanks!

Fully agree. Bench top wet saws suck for small cuts. Always trails off at ends. Biggest thing is to let the blade cut. It’s definitely more time consuming without professional tools. Better blades help too

I’m honestly just using a 40 tooth Diablo blade, a finer blade would be better 80 or more 👍

If you are new to it then cutting them on the wet saw is more forgiving. The webbing on the back is what gets you. I cut the section out with snips first and then cut the main part on the wet saw. I'm scared to cut on a chop saw anymore. Catch some shrapnel in the throat or eyes haha.

Absolutely started in the middle,why not just say "you know all this" and sit and have a beer. You do know this is supposed to be a tutorial? How about starting at the beginning,never done tile so don't know what you didn't show
