From the 🇺🇸 USA. Your tutorial popped up on my phone so I said let me see what this channel is about! I have tried watercolor in the past but did not have instruction. You do that and have inspired me to try watercolor again🥰 So THANK YOU for that🌸🌺

@@raecampbellsstudio cold pressed paper is bumpy and hot pressed is smooth. Suggestion for starting out?
@raecampbellsstudio3 жыл бұрын
@@cathycambray2757 that’s right. I would say to avoid hot press if you’re new because I find it the most difficult to work with. I prefer mixed media paper which I use a lot in my tutorials because the blending process is easy. Of course everybody has their own way of working and their own favourites but mixed media paper is far more forgiving than watercolour paper. And it’s cheaper!

I’m sure I will love it!! Bearded are my favorite, but Dutch and Japanese Iris are lovely too. Your work is so mesmerizing and I’m a true fan of your work!! I am going to go back and try to bring my “failed” watercolors to life. Thank you for sharing that information with us. I just give up too quickly. Thank you for answering too. Much appreciated!!💐

Hi. later videos that are being launched within the next few weeks will have the reference photograph put in the screen from time to time. I don’t want to keep it in there for too long because it takes up too much screen real estate. You can also have access to the reference photograph in our Facebook group. I’m glad you like the tutorials xx

I loved painting this tulip because of its vibrancy. What do you enjoy the most when painting flowers?
@artbydrbee3 жыл бұрын
This might sound like a predictable answer coming from me... but I enjoy painting flowers with a BEE in frame! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well, of course I was going to say that... couldn't help myself 🤣🤣🤣 I love drawing flowers too... again, especially when there is a bee sitting on them, looking very busy and beautiful! ❤️❤️ ❤️❤️ So my answer is, any flower with a bee on it is what I enjoy most - putting that bee on the flower 😌 To me, the bee feels like the icing on the cake! Helen, I would love to see you paint a watercolour with a bee! Have you done one yet? You would ace it, I'm sure ❤️❤️❤️❤️ It's so much fun, and they are such cute little creatures, so fluffy and adorable, yet so humble, always on a mission, and communicating with other bees through dance! You can't get more creative than that! They are amazing, really!

I hope to try this tulip, but in the meantime I have a near-urgent query: When I paint a second glazing layer on top of existing paint, it ALWAYS stirs up the first layer and makes a mess -- even when I've let the first layer dry for ages. I've more or less concluded that the second layer needs to use as few brushstrokes as possible, and those must be very light in pressure. But you don't do that at all! You use many tiny brushstrokes, sometimes almost with a scrubbing motion, and it doesn't seem to disturb what's already there. What's your secret?
@raecampbellsstudio2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ruth - the trick is the make sure that your first layers are THIN - and of course dry as you say - dont mix your paint up too thickly and use a light stroke when applying the watercolour - what brush do you use? Also, have you watched this video where I show you in detail how to apply the paint?kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX_df3mjnZejl7M

When working wet on wet, I constantly struggle with oversaturating my paper... This leads to buckling and lots of frustration. Typically I use Strathmore 300gm cold press paper. Are there better options so this does not happen? I love the look of watercolors, but the muddied results of my labors are a bit disheartening. Tulips are one of my favorite flowers and, as expected, you portrayed it beautifully. ♡
@raecampbellsstudio3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, thank you for your lovely comment Peggy. Regarding working wet in wet, it’s important to make sure that each layer is completely dry before adding the next because this causes blooms and also makes your paint to go muddy as you’ve explained. It also means that you can build up your layers slowly. Paper will naturally buckle anyway but should sort itself out when it’s dried. I never stretch my paper beforehand but it always buckles midway through. It will settle down.

@@raecampbellsstudio Thank you, Helen! Admittedly, I am a little timid with my use of water colours. I typically paint in acrylic or oils and learning the watercolour technique is a process. You've inspired me to pull out my stash of'failed paintings', reanalyze my work and keep trying. Your videos are very informative, enjoyable and beautiful. ♡
