Easy to Paint Watercolor Idea: Whimsical Colorful House

Do you do any research, look at references, etc about the subject you plan to draw or you just go at them blindly from memory? Do you do any "practice runs" before filming?

Great question, I was thinking to film and show my "practice run" - how I draw a small sketch (thumbnail) first in my sketchbook. There I could see what would fit on the paper and which potential colors I might use, and then based on that I make a bigger final piece. Reference I currently don't use, but was thinking to start. There are a lot of gorgeous reference photos and art on Pinterest, so I could practice perspective lines. Although I'm not going into realistic or urban sketch style I like to keep this kind of illustration/whimsical style.

I absolutely love this. I have been doing flat (no perspective) street scenes. However, I love the whimsy. Some of mine are wonky but NOT ENOUGH!!!! I draw, then pen in and then paint. I love the addition of the splatter (which I love) and then the use of a white pen. I also like the color mixing you do. Gee, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler so you'd think this wouldn't be so hard for me. Back to the drawing board! Thanks for the inspiration.

I totally relate to the struggle with perspective-it's something I'm working on in my sketchbook, but I still tend to stick to one-point perspectives or flat objects when I draw.
