Thanks Jason for the video. It is very helpful. I bought the OEM Panasonic battery from my Toyota dealer here in Texas for around $350 with tax. It is expensive, but the original battery lasted a little over 10 years for me in my 2008 TCH with about 189K miles on it. I asked the service department at my dealership about hooking up a 12v battery to help maintain the ECM, etc., and they said none of their techs do that when they swap out the battery in Toyota hybrids. They are all Toyota trained technicians. I got everything ready to go in the trunk so I could swap out the old battery with the new one as quickly as possible. It only took me a little over a minute to disconnect the old battery, pull it, and get the new one in place and hook up the terminals. When I started up the TCH all that I had to do was reset the clock and the radio stations that were stored in the memory. All the blue flags that I had assigned in the navigation system were still there. There was also no "Check Hybrid System" or any other warning message when I turned the car on. I just had to wait for the navigation system to load and there was a message to not turn the car off until it had finished loading. I drove the car around the neighborhood and everything was fine. I really appreciate you sharing the video. It helped me decide to do it myself and save the labor cost that the dealer would have charged me.

Now that I have actually replaced the auxiliary battery in my 2009 Camry Hybrid, I want to add a few of my own tweaks to the process Jason demonstrated. 1. In removing the hold-down bracket, I removed the front screw first. This allowed me to tilt the bracket up in front/down in back, taking the pressure off the nut at the rear allowing me to just twist the nut off by hand. Remember to reverse this process when reinstalling the bracket last. 2. Instead of struggling to loosen and disconnect the cable from the negative battery post, I suggest first removing the screw at the other end of the cable where it connects to the frame at the front of the battery, right next to the first crew you remove for the hold-down bracket. Further along in the process, after the old battery has been removed from the tight compartment, you can remove the cable from the battery post and immediately install it on the new battery, saving a lot of frustration from working in a tight location twice. Yes, you'll see a few sparks when you later re-connect the cable to the chassis, but they are harmless unless you have gas fumes floating around in the truck of your car. I was blessed that the original battery lasted more than 8 years. I think of it as this replacement only costing half-price. Also, when I first turned the car on, the computer went through the "getting started" steps as expected. Once the instrument panel was fully lit, I was able to start the engine without a problem on the first try. Just be patient in letting the computer reboot everything before starting the engine. Do things swiftly and you may not even need to reset the clock, like me. Here's wishing all of you similar success.

Someone indicated the battery case reads "20HR 57AH CCA450A D26(JIS)". I can tell you this much from that number: 20 HR = 20 hour battery 57 AH = 57 amp-hours, the total amount of power CCA450A - 450 Cold Cranking Amps (more relevant with engines with carburetors) D26 is the physical format of the battery (based on battery dimensions for fit into the space that holds the battery in your car) JIS indicates this all is based on Japanese Industrial Standards

My 2007 Camry Hybrid 12 volt battery finally died after 214k miles and 17 years of service. I purchased an Interstate 35 AGM from Costco and installed myself after finding your video. The temperature sensor was carefully plied from the old and attached to the new with aluminum flashing tape. This tape has a very tenacious grip and is very durable. I wanted to reattach the vent line, but found the vent tube from the old battery is too small for the new battery. I called Interstate if they had a vent tube fitting for their 35AGM, and they referrred me to local auto parts stores like O’Reilly or Autozone. These guys don’t have fittings that fit the vents. Then I searched online to see the reasons for venting, and found out the vents do not require venting to the outside as the only gases emitted are minisule amounts of hydrogen and oxygen. They do warn that if are habitating/sleeping in the same area of an agm battery (like in a motor home or RV) then venting would be necessary. BTW, the diameter of the vent holes on the 35AGM battery is 5/16 inch or 8 mm. I have not reattached the vent line hose, and think it’s not necessary but like to hear other people’s opinions.

I actually have that Odyssey battery in my 2007 Camry Hybrid right now and it works just fine. Doesn't need venting because it's AGM. And the battery sensor I simply taped to the top of the Odyssey. I used an Exide Edge FP-AGM24F battery on my Camry Hybride 2009 and it works perfectly. It cost me about 250$ and installed it myself by removing the vent tube from the old battery and put it in the new battery that has a hole for that. After, I remove the sensor on the old Panasonic battery, and I stick it on the top with a good alluminium tape to help conduct the temp to the sensor.

Thanks for this video, it was useful to me while I researched my options.. For anyone else interested, the PEP boys Bosch Group 35 AGM battery is an alternative. It has a vent (you will need to ask for the specific connector for the battery, as the OEM battery connector does not work) that can be connected. It fits/works well in my car (you may need to turn it around 180). For my 2008 Camry/hybrid, I did not have connect a backup 12v battery (the radio lost its presets, but no other issue afterwards). PEP boys do free install and frequently have a sale price on their battery.

Hi, I have a 2010 Camry/hybrid and I called my local PEP boys in LA for the Bosch Group 35 AGM battery and he said that it wouldn't fit because of the extra plug that hybrid battery's need. But even without that plug you still connected the battery? and it worked?
@UTube_userRM
@UTube_userRM 5 жыл бұрын
@@noseams03 Not sure what plug he is talking about, apart from the vent connector I already mentioned in my post. The vent connector comes with the battery but I think they toss those since most non-hybrid cars do not use them. When I asked for it, the mechanic simply got one from some bin they had. It fit perfectly. You just cannot use the OEM connector that you already have (assuming you still have the original battery), since there is a size mismatch with the agm 35 vent. I have had no issues since I installed it about 3 weeks ago. My local PEP boys dealer was also uncertain - but they were able to do it anyway. It may be better to show up and have them actually try.

@UTube_userRM
@UTube_userRM 4 жыл бұрын
@@bobpage2926 Your car should have the sensor. When you replace the battery do not lose it. Simply reattach the sensor you already have to the new battery (just tape it to the surface preferably a tape that can work at higher temperatures). The purpose of the temperature sensor as far as I know is to prolong the life of the battery. If the manufacturer did not include one, they did not think it necessary.

The 12V battery powers the car computers, so if it's too low, the car won't start. Jumping a hybrid is tricky because the connectors are minuscule since very little current (amperage) is involved in the 12V system (no starter motor). My '05 Prius loses the "auto-down/auto-up" feature on the driver's window when I change the 12V battery; the remedy is to just operate it a few times, and it loses all my NAV memory points. I tried using a backup battery (a 9-volt cell should work) but it didn't do any good; I think I need to connect right at the 12V battery terminals, not the "jump" connection under the hood. Wife's Camry is 12 years old on original battery, works great. My Prius has a published hack for getting battery voltage to show on the display, along with lots of other info, usually used by the dealer mechanic. ICE car batteries die much sooner because they drain heavily when turning the starter motor. Toyota hybrids have no starter, the 200V traction battery spins the engine when needed. If you've run the battery dead (from "sit in the driveway listening to the radio with the engine off" -- guilty) or sit unused in the cold too long, it's no longer reliable and should be replaced. Once they're damaged they're not the same. A battery vent hose typically vents to outside the car -- that's what it's for.

folks, for 2015 camry hybrids and later: there is still the vent tube but it's now located on the right side. but the temp sensor is now gone so no worries there. the problem is finding an agm with a height of around 8 inches. please note there is extra length and width room for your new battery and the height can go up a bit but then you might need a longer bolt for the hold down bracket on the low side. basically so far it's been a major pain finding the correct size battery replacement without going to the dealer. i'm still shopping. please note: do not connect a standard battery charger to these agm batteries!!! you can wreck the battery. it needs to be a low amp charger designed for agm battery! and don't leave it attached for long. see the label on the top of the old battery regarding charging duration etc. with the virus, we aren't driving much and the onboard electronics are draining these agm batteries. that's why our later model camry aux. trunk batteries are going dead! if you connect your old charging equipment to these agms you will kill an otherwise ok just discharged battery! further note: agm batteries still have lead in them and they still have vents you just can't see the vents on these agms for trunks because they've tried to solve the venting problem with the little vinyl tube. i found my tube not even connected in the trunk if you can believe that. hydrogen gas can still build up in the trunk when the battery is being charged when you are running the car around town. i doubt it's much gas in the trunk but possibly with the virus, the charging gas amount will go up since the recharge will take longer. this is bad design on the part of toyota. they need to find a place under the hood so we don't have to worry about hydrogen in our trunks! has anyone heard of a camry hybrid blowing up because of hydrogen in the trunk?

be grateful you didnt have to shovel any snow this year buddy. YOU can always try alibaba or ebay for cheaper OEM toyota parts. but not all things great must be replaced by OEM toyota parts. Always use OEM ball joints, but for this gig, just use any AGM with more than 440cca with a vent tube hole that fits in the location. You will need to reuse your temp sensor on original battery. hi guys, I'm in Sydney Australia. i've been having issues starting my car lately & Toyota tells me because i don't drive it much, the auxiliary battery is getting low. it's true i've only done 15000kms in 27 months since buying the car & since i took it for a long drive last wk & have been driving it more, it's having no issues starting...now I'm getting good fuel economy from longer drives that are longer than 20mins, but if i do a short drive up the road to the supermarket, say about 8 mins in the car, the fuel economy rats is really high, anywhere between 10-15 litres per 100kms, usually after long drives it's anything between 4-6 litres per 100...in the past before having issues starting my car, i never had this issue on the short range, it would always flash around 4 or 5 litres per 100 even after an 8 min drive. but since having issues with starting the car, which toyota says it's because of the auxiliary battery being low due to my lack of driving, the short range fuel eco says between 10-15litres per 100...toyota says because the car is regenerating more often to compensate for the auxiliary battery being low, is that correct? because i don't understand why it says between 10-15litres per 100 after a short 8 min drive, when for most of that time or for at least half that time, it's in EV mode. now they say as long as i keep driving more & use the car more, that it will sort itself out for the short term & i may get an extended period with the aux battery, because i've only had the car for 27months & that's the age of the aux battery, which it sounds like it's too early to be needing a new one, but because of the lack of driving, that's why it's playing up. does this sound familiar to anyone? it feels like something else is wrong with the car, but toyota is 100% certain that's it's behaving the way it does on short drives because of the aux battery having to regenerate more often. they say it's $547 AUD which is around $417 US to have it replaced & labor is an extra $70-140 AUD which is between $53-106 US to have it fitted sigh, so all up between $620-690 AUD which is around $470-520 US, when it eventually dies. is that good value? or should i just buy the battery & fit it myself?

San Jose, CA here. My trunk battery konked out on me this week. Went to Interstate Batteries to try to get the battery right from the source. Nope. No luck. They sold me a $150 battery, but I had to return it because it didn't have the right sized vent hole and the housing. Turns out that the only replacement that fits is from Toyota dealers. I called local Toyota dealers and they're giving me a range of prices - from $700 (cheapest, Sunnyvale) to $750 (Gilroy) to $1100 (Capitol Expwy) to... $7500 !!! $7500 ??? (they tried to sweeten the deal by giving me $1500 credit for a core). Won't mention the dealership, but it's a South Bay one I haven't mentioned.

@ Hi Ken. I assume your old battery was Panasonic which had a single vent tube outlet. The Interstate 35agm I brought from Costco works great. Don’t worry about the vent tubes as the amount of gas emitted are minisule. I tried to find replacement fittings to accommodate the vents on the 35agm battery, 5/16 inch or 8 mm diameter, and so far no luck. Then when I researched the necessity for venting, it turns out a minisule amount of hydrogen and oxygen are released during charging, and the dorky heat sensor detects if the battery gets too hot which I assume stops the current from the alternator to prevent overheating. Two AGB batteries fit my Toyota: 24f and 35. I chose 35 because here in California it’s more than adequate for the driving conditions and the weather in mild. If I lived in a place where it gets extremely cold then the 24f would be a better choice. Since hybrid car stops the engine while the car is stationary, the AGM battery works to start the engine and the car is powered up. The new AGM battery works great in stop and go traffic - and you don’t notice any delay nor shaking from the engine. I also live in NorCal, so we experience lots of stop and go traffic and long stoplights. The only issue with the new battery is you have to install it with the positive terminal in reserve - but don’t worry because the existing cables are long enough.

@ingvarleskovar7169 - Car batteries are usually in the engine compartment where venting is not an issue. In a Toyota Camry Hybrid, the battery is located inside the trunk, which is inside the passenger compartment. The vent hose to the outside of the car is a critical safety thing should the battery start to cook for some reason. The big traction batteries in the Hybrid are always charging the 12v battery when the Hybrid system is on.

I just replaced the original Panasonic Battery today. Here is what I did: (I spent $100 total on the new battery and everything is working) Purchase a $100 battery (size 24 not 24F which has flipped terminals). Remove the temp sensor from old battery and stick it to the new battery either with tape or hot glue or superglue. If the new battery doesn't have a vent hole than no hole=no problem. Hook it up and it works perfectly. 1/4 of the cost via going to the dealer. No errors on dash, everything works, radio presets are still there even though the battery was disconnected. $100 fix (dealer quoted $441). I got my battery at Costco which was the cheapest ($100) for me but you can try autozone or o'reillys they have them for $129 if you price match with walmart etc.

This doesn’t sound like an AGM battery. Look, I get it, Toyota didn’t “factory install” the cheapest battery for a reason. Hybrids start and restart your engine multiple times on a single trip. At every friggin stop light. An ICE only vehicle does not do this. You need a better battery cause you’re using it far more often. Yes, sure, AGM batteries cost more. How much does a tow cost? If your battery lasts ½ the time, how much are you saving?

as long as you purchased the same type battery you are replacing AGM (not lead acid) just reuse the sensor out of the old battery and tape it to the battery. THe vent tube is for when the car overcharges the battery releasing dangerous sulfuric acid and hydrgen....just bad stuff. Lets remember this battery is actually in the cabin (trunk) so the vent IMHO is just a safety feature. I am not sure how they DESIGN a sealed battery to vent....but they did! you could ignore it or worry like hell and find a battery that has a vent tube hole.

Knowledgable techs keep a 12v motorcycle battery in the shop and plug it into the OBDll port to retain the valuable ECU data in the computer memory when they need to disconnect the batttery for some reason. What caused the hiccup with the keyless start? Was it related to the tiny but very expensive OEM special purpose 12v battery ($350 2/13/21 in the magnificently engineered Toyota Camry Hybrid). It doesn't do much so why did it developed a headache within 5-yrs of being new? you want to know what caused it. So you plug that $2,500 Snap-On scan tool into the OBDll port to see what's up based on all the neat data stored in Engine Control Unit memory. ==> You would rather not boot up the ECU if you have choice. And yes the AGM battery is venting a little Hydrogen gas all the time into trunk/cabin and its the reason the little hose is attached to to the battery to vent it overheard. .

BigPapa - the Camry Hybrid 12V battery is mounted inside the trunk (which is also INSIDE the vehicle). The vent hose is *very* important to vent any poisonous gasses from the battery to the outside of the vehicle. As you know, almost every other car on the planet keeps the battery under the hood, where it is outside, and vented through tiny hold in the caps. Can't do that with the Camry Hybrid setup.

my camry hybrid gave me the OBD code that says i need to replace the hybrid battery. will this 12 volt also trigger that same code? car runs, warning light is orange, not red. says "check hybrid system". i'm hoping i can get away with just this battery!

OK, so you replaced it with OEM Panasonic. I have not noticed how much you paid for it, they used to run in over $400. Maybe it's less now. 1. it's not a "normal" battery. it's a deep cycle AGM - advanced glass mat battery. There is literally no liquid electrolyte inside and it is made for large storage and deep discharge. 2. sensor on the side is thermistor. It monitors battery temperature and prevents it from overheating. It can actually be peeled off, gently, and then place onto a new battery, should it not be OEM Panasonic, without thermistor. 3. Vent. Exide now makes deep cycle battery with vent, so does Optima, special order. Optima is widely used for Prius replacements. I used older Yellow Top Optima and simply rigged vent tubes onto regular vent provisions it comes with. 4. Now the most important thing. DO NOT REPLACE THIS BATTERY WITHOUT 12V BACKUP POWER CONNECTED TO CABLES. Or, you taking chance of ECM going nuts and throwing a bunch of error codes. Even user manual says that if there were error codes in the dash after battery replacement, power cycle system with 3 consecutive complete start ups and shut downs. I know one owner who "just did it" and landed paying over $500 to dealer to reset all codes. So a small 12V battery with clamps, connected to cables as backup may save you some money and headache. Many say "It's all foolish, I had it done no problem". Sure, but anyone knows measure of their luck?

Can you give us the model number for the Optima special order battery you mention that has a vent hole. I've asked several Optima dealers and even inquired on Optima's website and no one knows anything about an Optima battery with a vent. So, please pass on the model number so more of us can take advantage of this option. Thanks!

They had one for Prius, at least, that was reported as such by Prius owners at toyotanation hybrid forums. For what it is, it is quite suitable as replacement for Camry also. I'd suggest to jump there and ask Prius owners. Personally, I simply resined two tubes on top of Optioma existing vents. It does have 2 vent holes on either side of the battery top. I found two tubes that had flat "pigtail" with hole that goes into the tube and resined them on top of vents. Then T-d them together and connected T to the OEM tube. Thing is, AGM batteries have very little electrolite and produce literally no hydrogen. Entire thing about venting them can be over rated.

That's an interesting solution and surprising for every dealer I've talked to, including Optima's website, told me that none of their batteries have vents??? I'll check the toyota nation hybrid forums to see if can get the model number for the Prius battery. Tks

The original 12v battery should last 20+ years, if taken care of properly, but it is yet to prove as there is no history. the trick is to use a proper charger when depleted. Replace with OEM part only if reliability is your priority. I can't trust a 14y old battery and just changed mine. power cycle three times if you have residue.

Michael, I assume it would be quite similar. My Camry is a 2008 (still running strong). I chose the years based on the "edition" of Camry hybrid, assuming that all within that year range would be very similar. I would pop your trunk and see how similar it looks to what's in the video.

How do you access the trunk if your battery is completely dead?
@JasonsHonestReviews
@JasonsHonestReviews 8 ай бұрын
That's a really good question. I don't know the answer to that. Luckily mine wasn't completely dead, but that would certainly be a big problem. Maybe it has some way of pulling from the hybrid battery or something. I'm not sure.
