I want to try to answer the most common questions I'm seeing here. I hope this helps people, and I'm sorry I forgot to include these details in the video itself. 1. I chose scarlet drills over tin drills because of personal habit. I'm used to using scarlet drills. Tin drills work just fine. 2. The conveyor belt/table saw system is specifically designed to avoid overflow. you'll never fill up your table saws this way, and you're making them at 4x the speed. 3. the electricity generator is there because the lever alone isn't enough to power everything, AND I want the table saws to continue to do their thing, even if I turn off the wood farm. The generator there allows me to flip the switch, disable the farm but continue to process planks. 4. This is the big one....why do I let the main root trunk grow before planting the other seeds? This is difficult without a visual aid, and I had a hard time making one in photoshop which is why I didn't have it in the video. Wood will grow up to 5 tiles away from the root along its trunk. Lets say I put down the side roots at the same time. Root 3 happens to grow a piece of wood that isn't connected to the main trunk yet, there's a 1 tile gap. We now have 2 trunks, and if they merge they are still 2 trunks. Seed 2 is trying to grow along the main trunk but it hits the trunk for seed 3 and it can't grow beyond that, so now seed 2 just stops growing. Having 1 trunk going down the entire length of the farm gives all the side roots a single trunk to grow down, guaranteeing they all spawn at the same spot and that they all continue to grow. 5. There is a bug that causes the trunks not to grow the full length. This is caused by stalagmites under the ground tiles. Dig up the ground, then dig up the offending stalagmite and replace the ground tiles. This should fix the issue.

Hmm, why not just plant one seed on every block, and block off the bottom? The seeds can't grow over each other, so every "first" wood will grow upwards. Then you could just place drills above the seeds (with one block of empty space in between for the wood to grow).

So the root setup causes it to grow wood in the one spot at the drill super fast? or why have so many root seeds planted for only 1 drill point?
@willligh39843 ай бұрын
I'm sure he'll probably explain this as well better later, but it essentially forces each individual starter root, running the length of your main branch to push to one spot at the drill bit. This means that each individual root starter adds one additional block to be calculated in to how many is broken at a time by the drill. It's doing the same thing as if you grew each individual root into a separate drill but by focusing it into into one point using the main branch you save a ton of space and makes automation much easier.

Can the same logic be used for many other things than just wood? Can I automate ore to ingot creation? Anyway to do this with farming?
@DakonsMadhouse3 ай бұрын
sure can. if you have a boulder going, set up conveyors around it leading to a robot arm. then have a smelter behind that, then another robot arm and then a chest. And your ore will leave the boulder, travel to the arm, get moved into the smelter, then the finished bars get moved into the chest.
@paulcorbin48643 ай бұрын
@@DakonsMadhouse love this and to add to it, you can daisy chain this (robot arm, smelter, robot arm, smelter...etc) for it to auto smelt every ore coming down the conveyor so that you dont have to separate the ore yourself. all finished bars will end up in the same chest at the end
@carriejohnson49223 ай бұрын
@@paulcorbin4864 the only problem I have seen with multiple ores, so lets use gold and iron as example, the robot arm will try to pick it up and place it in whatever you have connected, meaning if it’s gold ore and you have a regular smelter than the ore just gets placed floating next to the regular smelter since gold ore can’t go in it.. workaround that I’ve found… Have the arms and smelters set up one behind another instead of side by side, so that the next arm will then pick up the piece of gold ore and place it in the smelter behind it(assuming you have the correct smelter for gold ore behind the second arm.) And if you have more than 2 ores being carried to smelters than make sure you have that many smelters set up one behind the other so nothing gets left floating. Example. (Think of it like an assembly line vertically not horizontal) Conveyer belt Arm Smelter (copper) Arm smelter(tin) Arm Smelter(iron) Arm Smelter(gold) The gold would get picked up by each arm and dropped behind until it reaches the correct smelter. Dnt have too long of a conveyer belt, or you’ll get a build up past the arms reach. Also the arm isn’t smart enough to just pick up a specific ore while letting the other ore pass it. Maybe this would work if you had arms set up on each side of the conveyer belt. I’m not sure If there’s some other way, I haven’t figured it out yet, and I guess wasted my time typing all of this lmao. 😅
@paulcorbin48643 ай бұрын
@@carriejohnson4922 that's what I meant by daisy chaining them. I have a u shape at the end of my conveyor line. All ore falls into one block space and a robot arm picks it up and puts it into a smelter. If it can't go into the smelter then it gets picked up again and moved to the next smelter etc. until it gets smelted. The robot arms also grabs all bars out and tries to drop those into another smelter, they obviously don't get smelted again so they just pass by them so to speak until then all end up in the chest ready for me to grab

dont think it's a bug? but not sure, because switches have lower power, like 13 and electric generators 25, hence your issues On the other hand, how much wood are you generating over 14 trees? for comparison on the basic wood farm?

Its definitely a bug. I went to my other wood farms on other worlds with the exact setup and they weren't having the problem. It was only happening to me in that world.

When is the earliest you can build a wood farm? Beginning game before the first boss ... or much later?

You can build a normal wood farm, but you won't have access to a lot of this stuff until you've progressed some. You can just build a room with roots planted and wood will grow everywhere, you'd just have to manually farm it. Once you are able, you can upgrade to something more efficient like this.

what if i dont have robot arms yet?
@DakonsMadhouse3 ай бұрын
then dont use robot arms. my easy design at the beginning doesn't use robot arms, just conveyors. Once you have robot arms, add them into the design. But until then you'll have to do planks manually if you need them and you won't be able to automate storage.

@DakonsMadhouse3 ай бұрын
did you verify that the power going to your drills is a steady, constant yellow light? If its flashing you need to add a wire under the lever. That will fix the issue. Even if the lights are solid, if you don't have a wire under the lever, add a wire and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I suggest submitting a bug report to Pugstorm.

why dont you just make the drills face horizontally? that would save you the need for most of the conveyor belts, and some of the robot arms..

you can make the drills horizontal if you want, it won't change the design. Flip it in any direction it still needs the conveyor belts and the arms.
@RhythmofResonance3 ай бұрын
@@DakonsMadhouse drills move stuff behind it so you dont need a line of conveyor belts, so you save conveyor belts
@DakonsMadhouse3 ай бұрын
@@RhythmofResonance yes I know that drills do that. I'm moving the wood from that spot to the chests for storage. If you don't want to automate that process, then skip the conveyors and just pick up your wood yourself.
@RhythmofResonance3 ай бұрын
@DakonsMadhouse yeah for that, the arm could have just been placed behind the last drill
@DakonsMadhouse3 ай бұрын
I misunderstood. the reason I didnt do the sideways turn on the drills is because wood grows only 5 tiles away from the root and I want to include the top root seed. If I move them on tile 6, I can grow the roots down 1 more tile but I wont be getting my top roots spawning there. If I move my drills up 1 tile to keep my top root part of the spawn, then I sacrifice side roots. So I went with the vertical turn for the drill. But now conveyors become required to move the wood.
@Zii_Vii3 ай бұрын
I don't understand why you made the vines longer in the more complex build. You only need 1 tile and you can put all the seeds next to each other with a 1 tile gap in front and a fence around the whole thing, like this: D = Drill, C = Conveyor, R = Root, F = Fence/Wall/etc FDDDDDDDDDDDF FCCCCCCCCCCCF FRRRRRRRRRRRF FFFFFFFFFFFFFF It'll always grow and be instantly harvested on top of the conveyor

check out the next video I made on this where I test the different wood farm designs and show why this design improves on the more simple design. Then you can determine if the more advanced design is even needed for you or not.
