Snake Plant Propagation by Leaf Cuttings in Water

Snake plant or sansevieria propagation by leaf cuttings is maybe the easiest way to produce many new snake plant babies. On this video we are going to do snake plant propagation by leaf cuttings in unusual way. Instead of using potting soil or cocopeat as the snake plant's growth medium, we use water on this process. The process is actually as easy as doing snake plant propagation by leaf cuttings in other common growth media. Here are the steps of doing the snake plant propagation by leaf cuttings in water:
1. Prepare any container that can be filled with water.
2. Fill container with clean water.
3. Make leaf cuttings of the snake plant.
4. Wash the cuttings with clean water.
5. Put snake plant cuttings in container.
5. Keep the container in the shaded area, don't put under direct sun.

Use sharp and clean knife/scissors to cut the leaves, was the leaves to keep them clean, and change the water one or twice a week

Leave them for about 3 days after cutting before putting them in water. They callous a little and it seems to make them more hardy. It's still not 100% success rate but makes a difference

Yes I believe so. I plant them in soil personally but I leave the soil dry for three days first before introducing any water for the same benefit.

So I tries this around 15 days ago and today when I checked the leaf cuttings have just started to root .I'm so happy 😁 (Also I didn't place the leaf immediately after cutting I kept it in the shade and 3 days later put it in for water propagation) Thank you so much it worked‼️

Cool video. You can put cellophane over a container of water, then put a small hole in it and hang them that way. No plant stabbing necessary. Don’t stab plants. It slows their growth and can even kill them. They don’t like being stabbed any more than we would. :)

I stabilise the leaf cutting in water by using an old coffee jar the leaf only just fits in. the sides of the leaf pressing against the sides of the jar makes it really easy to change the height as the roots grow down.

I recently tried this for the first time. Got 2 cuttings with roots out of 5, the rest rotted. It took several weeks to get roots. Doing it in soil over the last year or so I got 2 cuttings with roots out of maybe 40. It took several months to get those roots.

That's right. The yellow edges of variegated leaves won't appear in new leaves. All new leaves are green. To get the variegated new plants as the parent plant we should do propagation by division.

Why not just start them in the cup to begin with? You can make a cross angled holder with wooden sticks for the plant to rest in without poking it....I would think piercing the plant will damage it. Thanks for letting us know you can propagate from leaf.

if the leaves end up rotten, try using the division method. brush the top layer soil of the plant aside until you see the rhizomes (kind of like horizontal stems under the soil that connects the leaves) . cut the leaves apart from the rhizomes then put in water. this method worked for me

In fact you can cut these leave in 2 3 parts and keep on water.. I did that most of the leave pieces now have new buds with 2-3, new leave each.. realised one has to be really patient to seee the roots for snake plant

Thanks for sharing your technique in rooting of the snake plants in water, I used to plant them in water too,but considering the inconvenience of changing water and maintaining the hygienic condition, I am now planting them in pot with soil. So far so good. Recently, I have discovered this plant has had herbal properties in stimulating urination. I cut two pieces of the plant into small parts and boiled them in water for half an hour, then added with desirable amount of sugar ready for drinking. Throughout the night, I was awoken to pee for three times..........Just share this discovery to those who are interested in this post.

I think I'm gonna give up on propagating snake plants in water. What should I do with a leaf that keeps rotting then I cut the rotten part and put it back in. This goes on forever now the leaf is only half as long as it was originally with the repeated rotting and cutting off🙄

Todo bien pero no me gusto la parte donde le insertas los palillos a la hoja..pobresita eso me dolio I have 3 of them and I love it.

Mas mau tanya untuk di taro di indoor pakai media air aja kayak gini apa ttp aman? Tinggal ganti airnya aja kah? Dan apa bisa ditambah batu2 hiasan di dalam vas nya?

Yup aman pak, tinggal ganti air saja sesuai kebutuhan. Tidak masalah diberi batu2 hiasan. Akar juga akan tumbuh dengan baik
