In this episode, Cari and Janusz fulfil a dream: a train journey across the USA, from Los Angeles in the west to all the way east in New York. On the way they see spectacular landscapes, sleep in narrow train beds and capture everything on camera. But the best part of the journey are the encounters with Easy German viewers during stopovers in New Orleans, Memphis and Chicago.

One of the highlights for me was Janusz, en route to El Paso, setting just the right evocative mood with his guitar as he gazed out at the prairie scene unfolding before him. He has the soul of an echt traveler. ❣

I'm glad you got to travel across our enormous country the old-fashioned way. I really like Janusz's positive attitude (expressed around the 8:00-minute marke) about the magic of traveling simply in a new place and and not wanting for anything.

I agree, we don’t really do cross-country ground travel that much anymore, but it’s a great way to see the landscape. I’ve taken a two-day bus ride from Chicago to Seattle and a 36-ish hour train from Seattle to Los Angeles and they were both great.

Very cool to see the you guys take the Great American Train Trip from coast to coast! That's quite a trip too by train. I think I might be the only American who has taken the Amtrak multiple times from Chicago to NYC (which takes about a day) a few times since it's much faster to just fly (1 -2 hour flight)... after the third time taking Amtrak I now just fly or drive when needing to travel for a few reasons. To add on to Philip's comment as a native born Chicagoan, Chicago has the most number of people with German ancestry than any other major American city. There's even several German neighborhoods (most of the German's moved out to the suburbs in the 1950's - 1960's) in the city including Pilsen and Lincoln Square. Chicago at one time reportedly had "more Polish people than Warsaw".

Since you are in the USA, I am going to write my comments in English, rather than in German. Yup the train cross-country ride has its challenges in the USA, as compared to Europe. But then every traveling situation has its own challenges. Happy to see you survived Mardi Gras in New Orleans, an an venture in itself, as well as El Paso Texas. Moving on to Chicago, I do not know whether you were aware of this or not, is that Chicago is one of the most important historical German Cultural Areas in the USA that dates back to over 100 years. So there is a German Business District in downtown Chicagoland, a German American Chamber of Commerce, a Goethe Institute, and a German Consulate General's Office, that services the middle section of the USA. Had anyone of these entities known that your world-famous group was going to be in Chicago, there would have been a reception for you honoring your steadfast German Language and Cultural work that, your group engages in. Perhaps, next time. Safe journey to the homeland.

I took this train route by bus over 40 years ago. It took 3 days and was very interesting. I lost 20$ in slot machines in the Las Vegas bus station and decided to stop playing or I'd get to L.A. broke. I had a very hours in Phoneix, Arizona at night and outside the bus station I saw one of the most beautiful skies I've ever seen. On my bucket list is to take the northern route across the country near Canada. I'm an American who spent 25 years abroad in various countries and that literally changed my life and profession. Sad to say but sometimes I forget how special the US and our people are. Next time you're invited to Flint, Michigan between Chicago and New York. Who knows though, I may be on the road somewhere myself. Thanks for this video. Let me add, after all these years listening to Easy German I've still yet to ever try speaking German.

Congratulations on a great video…feels more like a documentary than your typical EasyGerman videos that I have been watching and following for years. I confess, I would never make this trip myself, but it looks like it was an ‘experience’ you won’t forget. Had I known you were traveling through Cleveland (I felt a vibe….truly!) I would have taken you guys to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that I’m sure Janusz would have really enjoyed. However, it looks like you were eager to get home. Nächtes Mal. 😏. Eric Patton.

You need to get out more and make more friends. I live in the Northeast and take Amtrak trains all the time. I have been riding Amtrak since 1979. The Northeast Corridor generates revenue and can support itself... Maybe if more Americans stopped believing the stupid pipe dreams of Elon Musk and realize improving our public rail transport is essential we may begin to have a network of trains like we used to have. The automobile industry destroyed funding for passenger trains while we silently let them.

😂😂 I have a friend in his seventies who still uses Amtrak, but you’re correct - you still need a car to get to the rail station. Ubers are only in the cities, not out here in flyover country. 👩‍🌾 🧑‍🌾

@@karmaoutlaw Definitely not true! Less than half of households in NYC own a car at all. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor operations (the Acela and Northeast Regional lines from Boston to Washington DC) see very high ridership.
