German food is so popular because so many of us are the children or grandchildren of German immigrants and the foods remind us of going to Grandma's house. So many of the Americanized foods come from people doing the best they can to recreate foods from home with what they had. My little town has been having Strassenfeste since the 1970s, so it has been popular in some places for much longer than 10 years.

NYC has one of the most diverse groupings of people from through out the world, that have made the Metroplex their home. It took a few centuries to get from there to here today, from the Dutch New Amsterdam to New York City, from the 1626 appropriations of Manhattan by the Dutch East India Company. So the area has about 400 years of European Influences, as one can see today with the various food and drink offerings. Maybe another time some one will do a tour of the Irish, Russian, Puerto Rico, Italians, English or French influences upon the city. Or at least post some YT links. One study of diverse languages spoken in major cities through out the world, suggest NYC has about 400 to choose from. Meanwhile best wishes on your Easy German Tour of the USA.

I cannot believe they got the pretzel right in NY, and they cannot get it right in Cologne. The songs I have been forced to hear at Karneval are embarassingly silly: "this train has no brakes" and "i'm selling my car really really cheap." (I say forced because I'm working there.) Tonight I'm gonna have to hear another song over and over and over but it's just about Lanterns, nothing silly there.

Welcome to the USA! I have found that most German themed restaurants in the Midwest are overpriced. I have not seen an Austrian themed one but most serve Schnitzel on the menu. Grocery stores here have extensive German made beer selections and are priced competitively with domestic beers and usually cheaper than the ˋcraft‘ beers. There are many families here whose ancestors came from Austria. They stated that the Austrians were either fighting with the Germans or against them! Armies would pass through their area often and take half of their livestock, grain stores, and any able bodied men to fight for them. They moved to the USA to be free of that. Enjoyed!👍🇺🇸🍺🇩🇪
