For the -ere verbs, the difference in stress has to do with Latin! In that language, there were *two* verb conjugations that ended in -ere. The 2nd conjugation ended in -ēre (long e, r, short e), the 3rd conjugation ended in -ere (short e, r, short e). In Latin, stress fell on the penult (2nd syllable from the end) if that syllable had a long vowel, but if the penult was short, stress was on the antepenult (3rd syllable from the end). E.g.: 2nd conjugation: tenḗre (to hold) habḗre (to have) debḗre (to owe, should, must) 3rd conjugation cúrrere (to run) préndere (to grasp) scríbere (to write) succḗdere (to follow, march, climb) Italian loses the distinction between long and short “e” in these verb endings, but keeps the stress pattern from Latin. For the most part, anyway-cadere (“to fall”) is a 3rd conjugation verb in classical Latin, but is pronounced cadére in Italian. Apparently that’s because it started being pronounced as “cadḗre” in 4th-century AD Latin!

That was a fun piece of information. Thank you! Do you happen to know why the name "Monica" has its accent on the first syllable rather than the penultimate one? I know in Spanish they have to put an accent on it to point out that it's out of the norm (it's my name, which is why I'm curious). If I am not wrong it has to do with Latin as well. The word Monachus (VL monicus) was stressed on the o. In Spanish (but not in Italian) the name Mónica (and other learned words like monacal, etc) is in contrast to "more simple" Spanish words from the same root like monje and monja , that dropped the unstressed vowel in the middle. It is true that those words in Spanish came via Occitan "monge", I think, so it's a little more complicated. Anyway, nowadays when writing and reading, Spanish is more consistent than Italian in so far as all words whose tonic accent does not fall on either the last or next to the last syllable, always take a written accent: pájaro, Mónica, mágico.... Hence you know technically at least how to pronounce them properly when reading @@MoniLein-yy2ue

My problem is I have a hard time syllibicating even in English. I can't distinguish syllables. Fortunately, I have a very good ear so when I hear Italian, I get the pronunciation immediately. Sometimes if I'm reading and say the word out loud, I am able to recognize if it is right or wrong.

Quando si vede una lista delle coniugazioni di un verbo, spesso c'è il "participio presente" che penso non sia un verbo adesso ma sia diventato un aggettivo o un sostantivo. Per esempio "l'uccello volante" o "l'uomo parlante" o "l'insegnante". Quali sono le regole per questi tipi di verbi che non sono più verbi? Si possono usare tutti i verbi in questa coniugazione come aggettivi o sostantivi o solo alcuni? Ce ne sono alcuni che rimangono verbi?

rimangono sicuramente dei verbi, in alcuni casi possono essere usati come aggettivi ( volante) o come sostantivi( insegnante). Siamo sempre coscienti che esistono anche come verbi, ma nell' analisi logica grammaticale è l' uso che se ne fa a dirlo. per una regola io dico che esiste come verbo se nella grammatica esiste il suo infinito, participio passato e il gerundio. ovviamente esiste la modalità cambio d' uso solo al participio presente, in quanto sta ad indicare una caratteristica costante e caratterizzante del soggetto.

la mia lingua madre è il rumeno. in generale questo mi aiuta molto nell'apprendimento dell'italiano PERO' l'accento tonico e' spesso un po' diverso, e mi ritrovo sempre a fare gli stessi errori. per esempio, "calor(I)fero" vs "calorif(E)r." alla fine e' solo una cosa di pratica, ma allo stesso tempo è frustrante a volte

I'm just starting out & yesterday I was even more confused than I am today about verb forms for female speakers. Thankfully, Katie's discussion of how she learned Italian helped me realize that the reflexive "Mi sono" always takes a feminine verb form ("a" ending) because the subject is the active self. Then I googled and found some tenses (no doubt ones I won't be using in the immediate future) for which verbs also differ in the first person depending on the gender of the speaker. Perhaps you've devoted an episode to this subject and I just haven't found it yet. But I'm very interested. (Yes, I know. I'll need to become more systematic & "tenace" in my studies of Italian grammar). Relatedly, I'm curious to learn more about sexism in the Italian language, what sort of changes are being made/resisted, and whether you think there is even sexism in Italian language instruction. Based on my very limited experience, it seems to me that males are frequently represented as the default gender, whether it concerns word lists, or frequency of representation in sample sentences, or even condescending stereotypes. Perhaps I'm wrong in which case I would be glad for an episode debunking misconceptions in this area.

Avete dimentico un'altra categorie de queste eccezioni: third-person plural verb conjugations. mangiano, finiscono, leggono, dormono, starnutiscono, sbadigliano, ecc ecc. The accent goes on the terzultima silaba.

Yeah, that's a tricky topic... in Italian it's very common to place adjectives after the noun, but there are some cases where the meaning might change depending whether the adjective is in front or after a noun. In the case of the phrase 'una macchina nuova / una nuova macchina', the meaning doesn't change, although 'una macchina nuova' is more commonly used.

I know that it's not going to be a very useful piece of information, but the distintion between stresses in verbs that end in -ere has to do with the latin origin of the verbs (who would have thought!). Verbs like volére originate from the second latin conjugation (meaning verbs that ended with -ēre, or long e), where the stress is on the second last syllable. On the other hand, verbs like crédere originate from the third conjugation (ending with -ĕre with a short e, therefore not stressed). In Italian the distintion between the two conjugations has been lost, but you can still see it in the stress of the words.

La terza persona plurale del verbo "andare" al presente indicativo è "loro vanno" (irregolare). "VAdano" è il congiuntivo presente. 😊
