The PTU is able to operate the hydraulic motor generator during all phases of flight. It cycles on whenever an engine is started, and may repeatedly cycle on and off whenever pressure in one system drops below a certain point. While it would engage in the event of a failure, in day-to-day operations it is commonly used during taxiing when one engine is shut down to conserve fuel.
@Sterlingjob7 жыл бұрын

It wasn't a ptu fault! When the engine starts the hydraulics start to raise and the ptu makes the dog bark when the pressure raises! It likely the hydrolics didn't fully equalise
@Sterlingjob7 жыл бұрын
PilotDan789 the ptu will only operate when there is a difference of more than 500psi between green and yellow systems. The fact that both engines are running and the ptu is also running tells me there is a fault with the ptu or a component connected to it.
@world-voyager4 жыл бұрын
I most definitely think the pilots forgot to turn of the yellow hydraulic pump meaning the ptu kept barking till the gear was retracted and flaps were set to 0
@Matt_J95a6 жыл бұрын
Before I knew what the ptu was, I'd be wanting off that plane...
@TheKierony7 жыл бұрын
This is totally normal - the PTU equalises hydraulic pressure, that's just the noise it makes. It stopped when the gear went up, massive drop on hydraulic pressure load when that happens - no fault :-(
@Sterlingjob7 жыл бұрын
Kieran Mellor There is a fault because if both engine pumps are producing 3000psi then there will not be a 500psi difference therefore the ptu will not run.
@Sterlingjob11 жыл бұрын
That is incorrect. With one engine running and the parking brake set the PTU does not run. We had this problem one night and the driver refused to taxi onto stand as the PTU was not working because the park brake was set.
@99domini999 жыл бұрын
When the plane taxi's with only one engine started, the PTU tends to run through the takeoff and sometimes even during departure. When one engine fails during flight, the PTU barks during every part of the flight.

@inacio1barsa12 жыл бұрын
Hi, !!. Sometimes this can happen, but its quite unusual. I fly this fleet for Air Berlin in Dusseldorf. Sometimes we have the ptu working all through the taxi because the pressure of the engiines after the startt-up might not be stabilized, and thats the ptu function, stabilize the pressure of the differente hydraulic systems. If the ptu is not able to do this after or during the start up it will do it when the gears go up, so it will be much easier to stabilize central system. Thank you :)
@ag63712 жыл бұрын
It's related to the landing gear green or yellow hydraulic lines (PTU deactivates after gear retracts)
@Sterlingjob2 жыл бұрын
The ptu will only operate when there is a 500psi or more difference between yellow and green systems. This is not normal operation.

Not sure it is a PTU fault. It looks as though they took off before both hydraulic systems had balanced. Noise due to one engine being started and up to full operating condition before the other.
@Sterlingjob3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I looked through the troubleshooting TSM and it points to the ptu manifold or something similar. If they had an engine pumps off they would not take off
@233kosta11 жыл бұрын
My guess would be a pressure sensor in one of the hydraulic systems fed false readings or something like that and after take off the pilots cut the PTU (they get a warning light somewhere I think) or the sensor returned to normal after take off, or the landing gear was causing a pressure difference. Not sure which one though. If it's common, I'd bet on a sensor.
@norbert16364 жыл бұрын
This is completely normal, Boeings' PTU works airborne only when both engines are on. Difference between green and yellow hyds must've been good enough for the pilot to take off. Do you think the pilot would accept take off clearance if he'd suspect flight controls failure? ;)
@Sterlingjob4 жыл бұрын
Not it’s not normal at all. Airbus is not Boeing and vice versa.
@norbert16364 жыл бұрын
@@Sterlingjob true but still I don't thing that pilot would take off if there'd be something wrong with flight controls and check A320 overhead panel HYDs. EICAS screens are switchable, pilots could miss checking hyds so they had to manually run PTU
@Sterlingjob4 жыл бұрын
norbert1636 Firstly he won’t hear the ptu and secondly it would only possibly be a memo message
@Sterlingjob4 жыл бұрын
norbert1636 it’s not eicas it’s ecam. You can’t run the ptu manually as that would be a system down therefore not despatchable
@norbert16364 жыл бұрын
@@Sterlingjob of course ecam, my bad, realized after publishing the comment. So why airbuses have PTU button in the overhead panel? I'm better with boeings so asking like reariously, not cocky or arrogant sarcasm :)
@kearneyboy6 жыл бұрын
No fault condition here, PTU barking to equalise Y/G circuit pressure imbalance. Differential pressure equalises on gear up and the PTU stops barking when 3000psi set point achieved on both circuits.
@Sterlingjob6 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, both engines should be producing 3000psi. Ptu should not be active unless the gear is going up, there is trouble shooting for continuous running of the ptu
@kearneyboy6 жыл бұрын
Sterlingjob Do you think there is a sensor fault on the control side or differential imbalance causing it to run on? Agreed 3000 at pumps. I would have said its unusual for the PTU to run with both engines up but not necessarily a fault condition with the PTU itself. I would imagine it would have flagged the ECAM. Interesting vid all the same.
@Sterlingjob6 жыл бұрын
Jordon Kearney The fault could either be internal or external leakage, engine driven pump, hp filters, priority valve or the ptu manifold ! No pressure sensor as far as I am aware
@kearneyboy6 жыл бұрын
Sterlingjob Yeah it would seem that one side is struggling. Sorry I should have been more specific with my reply. I was referring to the possibility of a secondary fault causing the observations on the PTU. Like the vids, interesting channel. Subbed👍

@karlbbb11 жыл бұрын
This is actually incorrect. The PTU logic states (among other things) it will only operate if both engine master switches are ON or OFF. Therefore if a single-engine taxi is being done, one of the master switches will be OFF, inhibiting PTU operation.

@Sterlingjob9 жыл бұрын
Bork Johnsen This is certainly not normal is this situation. The PTU should not continually run with all systems normal.
@borkjohnsen19249 жыл бұрын
Sterlingjob It's probably just a bug, or the hydraulic pressure not stabalising. I have been on flights with a PTU running for a long time, and some where it just goes on for a few secounds. If this was a fault, the pilots would at least have aborted the take off.
@Sterlingjob9 жыл бұрын
It's either the ptu or the hydraulic manifold at fault or an engine driven pump. I told the crew after as I'm an engineer.
@sumaket9 жыл бұрын
Bork Johnsen Since the PTU adjust hydraulic pressure, likely they didn't see any drop on the screens. Nothing serious since "fail safed" but i think Sterlingjob was right to report it. I'm sure not gonna thrust a cabin crew member for reporting mechanical hazards...cheers guys.
