When Will pointed out that people think that weight training burns a lot of calories, I remembered this: My strength coach in college/university, told us that walking or cardio, "burns" calories, but weight training "utilizes" calories. That's why weight training "burns" less calories than most people think. While when training with weights, the calories are "utilized" to help build, rather than simply being burnt off. 'Don't know if this is scientifically accurate, but my coach (Mike Arthur) had a world record deadlift, 540.25 lbs/245.05 kg at a body weight of 132 lbs/59.87kg. So I listened to him.
@user-pf9vf3ys4t3 жыл бұрын
Both burn calories it is just that cardio increases your heart rate and respiration rate more so in the moment it uses more calories recovery of muscles used during the cardio session post workout also requires calories.Whilst weight training uses less calories in the moment but requires more calories for recovery increasing your metabolism post workout. The more muscle mass on your body the higher you basal metabolic rate ( the number of calories required to support normal function of the body- cellular respiration without any movement)
@AllTheArtsy3 жыл бұрын
Cardio burns more calories in the moment it is done. But having more muscle mass raises rate of metabolism and calories needed just to exist. In the modern world, it makes more sense to have more muscle, than to have to do cardio for like 4 hours each day.

You don't add that many calories of protein to your body in a single day as new muscle. Not even 50. (750 calories of muscle is one lb. So adding 1lb of muscle a month is just 25cal added per day.) Even as a young man. It's a nice thought.

Hey Will I’m 15 and was over 260 pounds, I failed at my first attempt to lose weight. But then I tried again and cut out sugar and carbs. When I went down to 21p I reintroduced carbs slowly ( brown rice and popcorn) . Now I’m 205 aiming for 180. Thanks man
@emma-nd2ey2 жыл бұрын
hello! i may be 14 but i do have some good tips. one thing is that there is actually no reason to cut carbs. the reason why people that do keto will tell you it's good is because carbs store more WATER WEIGHT, not FAT. also, the only way you can lose fat is by prioritising eating a lot of protein and eating in a calorie deficit. another thing that makes keto seem like a good weight loss diet is the fact that a lot of things that happen to be high in sugar (which is a carb) only make you gain fat because they are higher in CALORIES, so the carbs in them really doesn't matter. there are really only certain scenarios where it's necessary to limit carbs, which are to quickly cut WATER WEIGHT to make a lighter weight class for a sport, or to lose excess WATER WEIGHT for a bodybuilding competition. this may sound very strange to hear because so many people try to overcomplicate things but the more simple it is = the more sustainable it is. now here are some tips for actually getting into a calorie deficit. online there are many tdee calculators, just search one up and find you APPROXIMATE calorie deficit. make sure when you track your calories you are weighing your food in GRAMS for solids and MILILITERS for liquids, its the most accurate way to see how much you're eating :) give it about 4 weeks at that approximate of a calorie deficit, also make sure you are lifting weights with progressive overload too. if you see a trend of weight loss and/ or progress pictures looking good then that is a good deficit. if eventually you hit a plateu just make sure to drop cals a tiny bit lower (by like 200). another thing, you need to remember that a "quick fix" is the worst thing to try and do. lastly, when you eventually lose the fat, when you up to your maintenance again and the scale goes up it doesn't mean you gained fat back, you just simply have more food in your stomach. i would also HIGHLY recommend watching youtube videos and podcasts by eric roberts fitness, particularily the youtube video on how to count calories, as well as many other really great tips for this kind of thing :)

Big fan here Will!! Love your personality and content. Also, I feel like you should mention that you still need to eat enough calories to meet your BMR each day in ADDITION to active calories burned! So really, all the training means you would have around 900 ADDITIONAL calories to your BMR (roughly adding up the active cals you burnt in each workout in the video). So if your BMR is around 1700 calories (as majority of the calories we need a day is expended this way) and it is probably higher as you are a large male with high muscle mass then 1700 cals BMR + 900 cals active = 2600 calories to be at maintenance calories (and that is conservative as it is not including TEF and other factors). So really, disregarding BMR is what made your day really difficult and a huge deficit.

Heres the issue I have when people say lifting weights doesn't burn calories. Sure, you don't expend much energy while lifting itself, but the thing is you're literally just tearing down muscle fibres. What you'd have to do I suppose is take a bunch of people, have them not train hard, figure out how many calories they're using to maintain. Then you split them into two groups and make them do some brutal leg sessions etc, feed them the few extra calories from increased movement and then feed the one group a bit more on top and compare what happens to body compositions

@@nathanvanderriet209 Yeah, something like a metabolic chamber would probably accurately give out the correct calculation.

I use hiit, jump rope, and resistance exercises to help create a calorie deficit while still maintaining some muscle growth and I still can't really make bad food choices. At least not too many. It's the sad sad truth about diet and exercise

Actually, if you make Taquitos, they are fairly healthy (if done right). I'm actually going to be making a batch of them this week as a part of my feed prep.

The one I use is very easy. Shredded Chicken breast meat, La Victoria Green Salsa, and Corn Tortillas. Corn Tortillas are between 25 to 35 calories each. (35 to 42 g) La Victoria Green Salsa is 10 Calories per 30 G. 100g of Chicken Breast is 165 Calories. Ovenbake the chicken breast at 350 degrees F between 12-17 minutes (until it isn't pink in the middle). Let it cool down for a bit, then using your fingers, you will shredd the chicken into super skinny strips, it's easy to shred it along the grain. Once it is all shredded, you can add between 70-100 grams of the salsa to the chicken and mix it together. Put the Oven to 400 degrees F. With the corn tortillas, you will need to microwave them with a damp napkin or heat them up on a frying pan to make them pliable and flexible. Fill the tortillas with the chicken salsa filling and roll them up, placed them on a sprayed cooking sheet, and place them into the oven for 15-20 minutes until the tortillas are crisp. This made up about 15-20 Taquitos for me. It's usually the toppings that end up being the problem for this so you can use some of Will's food hacks like using low-fat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and lettuce.

It's true that you'd have to do an enormous amount of exercise to outpace a bad diet, the good news is it will raise your BMR and weightlifting will add muscle mass which requires more calories to maintain. So you can't outpace it, but you can give a lot more leeway for "slip ups" in your diet.
