Miss Bee Townsend's Vintage Tips & Tricks

Күн бұрын

I tried following a 1950s housewife diet for a day. Let me share with you what the meal plan was for breakfast, lunch and dinner and what I thought of the food and diet overall.
N.B. This is just for the experience, I do not intend to continue eating this way, nor do I encourage it. This is a calorie restricted diet and nutritional information has vastly improved since the 1950s, so please don't use this video as a basis for your diet.

The purpose of this video is to try the menu, NOT to loose weight. I wouldn't never put myself on a prolonged diet from a magazine and I would never encourage you to do so either. Nutritional and medical research has come a long way since the 1950s and I would encourage anyone wanting to loose weight to consult a doctor and a nutritionist before doing so.

One thing I would add to the discussion is just how many women were on some form of mental health drugs. Many of which have reduction or complete loss of appetite while also making you feel full of energy. That, imo, is the only way one could eat like this and still do everything a housewife was expected to do with*out* passing out.

I grew up in the 1950's and saw my mother dieting almost all the time. Breakfast was usually a slice of toast topped with a soft boiled egg and a half grapefruit. Grapefruit was a dieters best friend in those days. Lunch was often salad, she used salt and pepper and made a diet salad dressing with tomato juice and a bit of oil. Another popular lunch was an "open faced sandwich," using one slice of toast, lunch meat or tuna, topped with a big leaf of lettuce.

Yes, the diets in those days were pretty restrictive. But salt, pepper and other spices would have been allowed on the diet. They have no calories. My mother tried to get to lose weight in the 60's, even though I was under 10yo. So I experienced some of the horrors of the diet.

Hi miss Bee! I wanted to thank you for your vintage hairstyles videos. I have just set my whole head in standing pin curls using your tutorial. I was very insecure about trying it, and wasn't very confident about the directions of each curl. I missed a few thin strands between the curls and definitely hoped and prayed for the best in the back. But when I took the pins out, brushed and teased everything, it turned out as if I almost knew what I was doing! What a surprising experience!

I get confused with the 50’s. I see ads from that time where they specifically tell you to gain more weight and be more curvy and pretty, but then there’s also dieting 😅

One has to remember that it had only been 5 years after the biggest war the world has ever seen ended. UK, for example ended rationing only at 1954. Food was already restricted back then but still consisted the baseline nutritional needs. To lose weight back then would also mean sacrificing nutritional needs. This type of eating really only ended at the early 60s.

Absolutely! I would never put my body on a prolonged diet from a magazine and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else does either! I just wanted to try the food, not see if I lost weight. I think that would be an extremely irresponsible video with very much the wrong message.
@ConstantCompanion

@@MissBeeTownsend Well..in America..dinnertime is closer to 6 pm. This eating plan is healthy .varied and balanced. After about the third day you would find that your pallette would cleanse and your inability to go more than a couple of hours without food would diminish. After about a week you would find the effects refreshing. Using it as a weight loss plan wouldn't be a good idea because the only real weight you would lose is water..which you would gain back quickly. About a week of this kind of thing would reset your body and leave positive health benefits..but .unless you're just trying to drop enough to fit into a dress for a special occasion.I wouldn't go with this for more than a week..then trade over. . But.. there's nothing wrong with it. It's a good short term plan.

This was definitely a bit grim! Not drastically restrictive or unbalanced though, could have been worse. Considering how many "health nuts" still eat grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and brown rice for almost every meal nowadays I can't really say we've come very far (if at all!) on this front 😅🥲🥦
@MissBeeTownsend
@MissBeeTownsend 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah agreed. Unfortunately magazines still encourage dieting and publish extremely irresponsible diet info. I felt the menu was pretty unbalanced nutritionally. There were no grains at all for lunch and dinner and the protein portions were super low. Then they randomly allowed you to eat bacon and a teaspoon of butter but no salad dressing 🤷🏻‍♀️ They also recommended you don’t eat spices…like why????
@MissBeeTownsend
@MissBeeTownsend 2 жыл бұрын
That was my thoughts but a nutritionist in the comments said it wasn't too bad...which is why I didn't want to give diet advice in the video because I'm clearly no expert 😂

Switch to V-8. It's a delicious blend of eight nutritious vegetable juices. Add "chili juice," lemon juice, "soy juice," (aka worchestershire), and most importantly, "potato juice" (preferably Absolut potato juice). It's a meal in itself.
