My parents were born there but I knew very little about this beautiful city of Funchal. I was so fascinated by everything in Funchal. The painted doors were absolutely so unique and beautuful. I thought that Funchal was inexpensive and reasonable to visit and even live there...until I read your comment. I assume you have visited that beautiful city yourself.
@susanatinsley71362 жыл бұрын
@@irenestein5190 I was born in Madeira and used to go to visit family every year, and one of the highlights for me was to go to that market - it was wonderful, cheap with great produce. I have not been there for a few years now, but quite a few years ago, not sure how many now, but that market became too expensive for the locals as it was such a tourist draw, and they decided to capitalise on that, pushed out the locals and it became exorbitantly expensive. I would not advise anyone to buy anything there. But really, it's no different to any other tourist destination, there will be scammers everywhere, even on beautiful little islands. However, do not judge the rest of Funchal/Madeira by the fruit/veg market standard. The fish market downstairs at the back however is still worth going to and Funchal/Madeira is still relatively inexpensive.

Madeira is beautiful. People there are very nice and welcoming. Thanks so much for your beautiful video and for the useful tips. I was ripped off in the Workers Market by a tropical fruit seller years ago. 15€ for rotten fruits. I don't understand how they can keep doing it. If they treated their customers properly they could have a very good business since there are a lot of tourists there but now everybody knows that the place is a tourist trap thanks to few rotten apples. See the Google reviews.

@@TheMattJames, "porco vinha d'alhos" is never served with orange . You tasted a "pastel de nata" which isn't a Madeira pastery. For this you should taste "queijada" that is much more traditional cake. You didn't eat limpets,... Some of the things that you eated in first lunch are served in very conceptual mode, very far away how the traditional food is served in Madeira. Someone is making money not only with what you payed but also from the visited restaurants and bars.
