Our first impressions of Tallinn, Estonia. A beautifully medieval city and the capital of the Baltic state of Estonia. Tallinn has incredible architecture, fascinating museums, and really unique food such as bear and elk sausage!

Ok I just had to click "like", just because this features my favorite restaurant in the whole world, Olde Hansa :) Everyone just take a look at the images in the vid to see why!!!

Fun fact about the Olde Hansa, the whole menu is just like it was in mediaeval times. No potatoes for example because that didn't exist in mediaeval Europe. All the servers are dressed in timely clothes and the music is also mediaeval themed. If you go on certain times of the week there is even live music that is played by mediaeval dressed musicians with instrument from that time period. So you totally feel like you have traveled back in time. Also the restaurant goes I think through 2-3 floors.

I love Tallinn! I'm from Finland so it's a rather easy weekend trip to do (or even a day trip from Helsinki) 😊 My favorite restaurant there is Rataskaevu 16, it's so good! I'd travel there just for the food 😂

That is so nice to have access to Tallinn like that! We hope to take the ferry from Helsinki some day! We will definitely add Rataskaevu 16 to our list for next time, thanks for the suggestion!

@@MaxandSidney Oh yes, Rataskaevu 16 is amazing! They've got two buildings a minute's walk away from each other with the same menu and the same staff rotating between the two. You'll feel so welcome and so cosy there, I cannot recommend it enough.

Note that "Pikk jalg" is not the "Upper Pikk Street" (even though Pikk does continue into Pikk jalg), but rather it means the "Long Leg/Foot" as there is also the Lühike jalg ("Short Leg/Foot"), both taking you on top the Toompea hill. And that Russian Orthodox church you seem to be obsessed about is MASSIVELY hated by Estonians as a symbol of Russian imperialism.

It is not a historical building. It was built only in 1900. For us it is new. And we hate it. By the way you have centuries thoroughly mixed up, talking about 14 century buildings as 16-th.

@@MaxandSidney it is an awful building, without taste, all this oppulence... .Much better if it would be taken down. This thought has been many times and the only reason it still stands was that our first president Päts was russian orthodox. It seems you have not seen the pictures of the park and gardens that were in its place before that monstrosity was built!

We have pretty strong heritage protection board. Some people can't tear at their old country houses or make big modern changes, because the house or buildings that are on some old known land have been marked as they have to be preserved as original as they are under the protection of heritage board. I don't know if that made any sense, but cheers!

It goes crowdier at the Town Hall Square after the dead November when the Christmas tree (we are having a fierce fight with Riga, the capital of Latvia about who got the first Christmas tree in the world in the middle of the city in 15th century btw) is erected and there will be christmas market around it. If there happens to be snow as well it is really beatiful. :)

well, there can be no dispute about the public Christmas tree - Tallinn had it first. Riga copied the idea and added their spin with decorations. doesn't take it away from Tallinn as the birthplace of the tradition of public Christmas trees. and having young spruce trees brought inside the house for Christmas / Winter Solstice - this tradition is ancient and predates any written records.

@@MaxandSidney Yep the forest animal meat here is quite ricth and as we have prepared them for hundreds of years in all kinds of ways we have found eays to make them naturally(local ingridients and sauses and sutch) as tasty as they can. Often these resepies and skills are handed down so not that mutch on paper. Also all traditional food done (exept fast food and sutch) is done with passion. Liderally some random vilage caffeterias can do higest taste (world)level foods with usual costs like 5 to 8 eur.

IS IT ALL SUSTAINABLY HUNTED? AND THE ANIMALS RESPECTED, NOT POACHED?@@KrK-EST
@tormfury7376
@tormfury7376 2 ай бұрын
@@healingnarcissism_ Poaching is very rare and harshly punished, so it practically doesn't happen these days (things were a little more wild between exiting USSR and 2000-ish). And while Estonia might be like 55% forest and low on population in terms of people, it's still divided up in a way that makes poaching pretty much impossible without getting caught. Either way, hunting is tightly regulated and animal populations are being kept a good track of. As far as sustainability goes, our game animal populations are so healthy that hunting is not just sustainable, but actually necessary. For example, while eurasian lynx is either extinct or under protection in most of Europe, it's got a green light for hunting in Estonia, because their population is constantly at above 2 times the size of what would be optimal for the animals themselves given the territory requirements for their own particular hunting habits. They just manage to sustain their population because Estonia also has more than healthy populations of their prey. And brown bears... Well, they're common everywhere in Estonia, except for the islands. Their population has been steadily growing with every year, having now reached double of what it was by the tail end of the USSR occupation, which is pretty neat. Although extremely hot summers like we've been having as of late can turn them into pests. While brown bears are opportunistic omnivores, they prefer to gorge themselves on wild berries and fruit. Extended heatwaves and drought period do a number on that particular food selection and in turn, desperate bears turn to fruit orchards and livestock. Either way, their number continues to increase, so there certainly doesn't seem to be overhunting. @KrK-EST You can actually get bear and game meat from stores affiliated with Lihapood during hunting season, and you can get it in canned form out of season. Although I do prefer the stuff I can get from local hunters myself.
