Eating INDIAN FOOD for 24 HOURS in LOS ANGELES!! Lamb Shank Curry & DTLA Butter Frankie | California

Los Angeles has some of the best Indian restaurants in the United States, so when I visited the city in August of 2021, I knew I had to go all-out and visit as many as I could. Join me as I eat Indian food for 24 hours straight in Los Angeles, California!
Joining me is my good friend and agent Kyle Hjelmeseth, who joined me at Biriyani Kabob House in downtown LA. It’s an awesome spot that serves authentic Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Afghan food!

We were ready to crush as many dishes as possible! Inside, we met Sunny and headed back into the kitchen, where we saw the cooks making chicken tikka kabobs, beef kabobs, seekh kabobs, plain naan, garlic naan, lamb shank biriyani.
They also prepared some chicken tandoori and two of my favorite Pakistani dishes, chicken karahi and nihari!
Before we headed to our table, we also tried some mango lassi, which was thick and rich in sweet mango flavor.
At our table, we started with the plain naan and garlic naan with the chicken nihari and lamb dam biriyani. The biriyani had a huge piece of lamb in it! We also had a yogurt sauce called raita, which I mixed into my biriyani.
We dove right in with our hands and broke up the lamb with our hands. The lamb was nice and chunky, and the biriyani was perfectly seasoned.
Then, I jumped on the chicken nihari with some naan. It was light and flavorful without being super spicy. Next was the Nali Nihari, which is a thick, rich beef stew. The meat was full of coriander flavor and practically melted in my mouth!
Then, we tried the mixed grill, which contained chicken seekh kabobs, beef kabobs, and chicken tikka. It was all so juicy and tender!
The lamb shank curry was next. It came in an oily, tomato-based curry and the meat fell apart at the slightest touch. The key was the fat, and the meat just fell right off the bone. It was my favorite, along with the Nali Nihari!
Kyle tapped out as we left, but I continued on to Bombay Beach, which is run by a couple who makes homemade Desi food. Inside, I met Rubal and Angat, who serve a garlic-and-cheese paratha that is wrapped around marinated chicken tikka, garlic, onion, bell pepper, yellow rice, and butter masala. It’s called a DTLA Butter Frankie and is popular in Mumbai!
I also had some samosa chaat, one of my favorite street food dishes. It’s made up of a deconstructed samosa, chana, yogurt, coriander, mint chutney, tamarind chutney, and more. It was fresh, sweet, crunchy, creamy, herbal, and downright phenomenal!
Next was the Frankie, which was almost like a huge kathi roll. I enjoyed it with a Bombay Brahmi Badaam, which is a refreshing drink that contains an ayurvedic herb called brahmi, almonds, cashews, and lemon juice.
The chicken tikka and gravy inside the Frankie was exceptional, as were the bell peppers and onions. The rice held everything together, and the garlic-and-cheese paratha was bursting with flavor! It was a huge meal in itself!
After a break to let the food digest, I headed over to Kyle’s house to enjoy a Tandoori chicken pizza from Bombay Beach! Its crust was a super crispy naan and full of incredible spices, chicken tikka masala, a tomato-based sauce, onion, bell pepper, and cheese!
Then, we had two amazing desserts called rasmalai and gulab jamun! The rasmalai was creamy and decadent and contained a bit of pistachio and saffron. Meanwhile, the gulab jamun was soaked in a sugar syrup. It was like straight sugar but so good!

As an Indian I always pray that some day my place becomes a place for every one. I want to see westerns, whites, blacks, japanese, Australians Africans as my neighbours. And I get to eat in their homes and say this dish no one knows except us!!! And I being play boy thing... David really surprised you haven't tried nihari in India Its available all over Delhi, Bhopal, Lucknow, Mumbai and the rest of the northern region ..it is very much an Indian dish by origin

Nihari was an invention of Mughals and their descendants primarily live in Pakistan after partition. So does Biryani and so many other things. They all were brought to India by central Asian Mughals. Authentic Indian food is primarily vegetarian which obviously slowly over the times got modified by Mughal rule.

@@sridharreddy8011 Not all Muslims but a large number of them are the one who call Pakistan home today. This explains in general why we don’t look alike each other. Some foods like Biryani may be have been modified spices wise according to the city’s taste & style, but foods like Nihari are unchanged and exactly cooked and eaten in the same fashion. Same applies to BBQ, Kebobs, Paya etc, which were brought by Mughals. These foods are primarily cooked & eaten by Muslims in Pakistan and India, as we know most Hindus prefer vegetarian. However, some of my Hindu friends in Karachi, ate these foods with us with just us friends hanging out together. Anyways, all modifications and improvisations are welcome as they make these foods just better and better.

If you’re going to eat with your fingers, do NOT use you left hand. I’m very left-hand dominant. I’ll pull a naan apart with both hands, as I haven’t mastered the technique of doing it one handed. Then I stick my left hand under the table to resist the temptation to use it. All that food looks de-li-shus! That Frankie looks like an Indian take on a burrito. I love how totally different cuisines devise similar recipes. You’re right about the sugar overload in the desserts.
