Karipap is our way of saying “curry puff”..there’s another name for it which is “epok epok”..so what you eating is basically pastry filled with potato curry. We also have other fillings like sambal paste sardines. Whether it’s nice or not, depends on where you buy it. Some stalls fry their curry puffs early in the morning so by noon it will become cold and lose its crispiness. A good curry puff is the ones that are hot from the stove. It should be as crispy as lumpia

Carrot cake is named as such because it has radish in it (radish is called 'white carrot' in Mandarin). Also the curry puff you had has a mix of chicken, potato, onions in curry paste. If you loved the iced milo, next time you've got to try the milo dinosaur, or godzilla!

That thick black sauce for the chicken is not oyster sauce nor hoisin sauce. It’s straight up THiCC Dark Soy Sauce. The “ garlic “ sauce is actually ginger sauce. You could add green onion / shallots / garlic to kick it up a notch. 😊

The chicken is actually poached, not steamed. After it is cooked, its is then dunk into ice water to stop the cooking process. That is why it is serve cold.

Benji, soo happy to see you in Singapore! My mom is from there and we just got back from a trip the end of this summer. More MUST try dishes that SG is known for, Chili Crab (the other national dish next to Chicken Rice), Laksa & Satay! That fried dough thing you got was actually a curry puff (which didnt look as good as it was not stuffed, definitely try a different stall, Maxwells has one that is very popular but unfortunately I cant remember the name.) And while youre in the airport on the way back, you MUST get some Bak Kwa, its like an asian jerkey! they have a few stores in Changi Airport. Nothing like it in the states.

The yellow stuff with the Chicken rice is ginger... minced ginger... And its called locally as sugar cane... not cane suger... Try it with added Lemon juice or Plum juice... It better. Curry puff is considered as a pastry. Its can be filled with potatoes+carrots cooked in curry... Or sardine... Or whatever the owner can think of... And you can have beer day or night from 7am till 10:30pm in public. No one would judge you if you have a beer instead of coffee in the morning.

We use fork & spoon to eat rice... that is ginger sauce for the chicken rice, not garlic 😅... the dark soya sauce is usually drizzled over the rice That black coffee is kopi-o, will be kopi-o kosong if no sugar 😊 You do not have to keep going back to Maxwell Food Centre as there is the largest food centre, Chinatown Complex Food Centre nearby. Radish in chinese translates to carrot, thus the name 'carrot cake'.

The sauce with the chicken rice is actually dark soy. Whilst regular soy adds flavour, dark soy is typically used to add colour to cooking. The other condiments are ground ginger, and a chili lime dip.

Lol, I went to a South Asian wedding and if there’s no assigned seating you need to tip your chair to reserve it otherwise someone will take it. It doesn’t matter if you have your phone, purse, jacket, or even a tissue paper, someone will take it because it’s not tipped over. I didn’t believe my friend and people took our seats except for my friend’s. So we had to eat on a small couch with a sofa table.

Chopsticks is when we eat noodles or when we have rice in rice bowls and dishes separately. For chicken rice on a plate we usually eat with fork and spoon. Push the fork onto your spoon with your rice. Westerners always use fork for rice (you hv grains slipping out between) when there is a spoon provided.😂 that's ginger paste not garlic

8:30 funny that you mentioned starbucks. because starbucks coffee is nothing compared to real coffee. also if you go to vietnam, they have a really big coffee culture. if you try their coffee you might not want anymore starbucks. you'll find a lot of singaporean and malaysian dishes are the same or similar because of their history together. singapore was part of malaysia until the 1960s, so same food, culture, racial composition. many similar food & desserts can be found in indonesia as well, because of the cultural exchange and assimilation. like the karipap you had.

New to Asia? Some of the things you said killed ms but love how positive and open minded you were. Just a piece of advice…don’t put your straw or utensils on your food tray, it isn’t clean. If you were given a bowl of rice, yes you would use chopsticks but you had a plate so fork and spoon. We are rather cosmopolitan and have adopted accordingly.
