I am a month late but am half Japanese. They are not a delicacy but more so an acquired taste in Japan lol. Treated the same Americans would treat pickles or mustard, some people love it some people hate it. The reactions are 100% accurate though it’s ridiculously sour. Side note you can find “Umeboshi” rice balls in any convenient store in Japan.
