My 240sx engine swap is finally complete with an LS1 out of a F-Body Camaro. Now that it's all over, I reflect on how this swap is not as easy as everyone makes it out to be.
For those interested in the exhaust setup:

I just wanted to share my experience with you guys after completing my 240LS. I don't want to discourage you guys from trying this because in the end it's definitely worth it, but you all should know a few details that most people don't tell you when starting something like this. Stay tuned for more v8 240sx goodness.

The title should have been, "why it's hard to do a really good LS swap." Your swap was done beautifully! I've done one, and my goal was not to allow the snowball effect. I had plenty of work to do on the vehicle to get everything set up, and I could later pull the motor for whatever upgrades I want and it wouldn't be nearly as difficult as the initial swap. This is my advice for first time swappers. Don't fear pulling the motor back out, just get it in and running, see what's up, then make changes.

some vehicles have more challenges than others, most of the time the vehicle itself isn't an issue its the people making it hard on themselves. also some people like the idea of a car, or like the idea of a project, and then when its time to lay in a puddle of coolant and turn wrenches, they run out of motivation. having a clear goal in mind and keeping a tight timeline and only buying what you absolutely need are key, also buying the most complete combo for your money will always get you 85% done on the first swing, nickel and dime shit will always drag your project out, kill your momentum and your motivation. i have documented plenty of "easy" ls swaps and changed the combination in most of them a few times while owning them for shits and grins. even going so far as to create spreadsheets with all costs showing no hidden or out of control issues. the platform itself and your goals are going to really dictate alot of the struggles you have real or make believe. obviously ls swapping a ford ranger pickup, or ls swapping a VW beetle have their own challenges and costs.

Nice job, but you're not entirely correct. You should have said LS swaps can be difficult in small vehicles. There are many LS swaps that are dead simple. Putting an LS is just about ANY vehicle that had a V8 to begin with is much easier. Putting an LS in an older, V8 equipped GM vehicle is ridiculously easy. Putting an LS in a Fiat, probably not so much.

i politely disagree. when you are doing an ls swap, any reasonable person is already aware of small items such as a cam and supporting mods as well as alternators and water pumps. if you're going LS, you're going big. and hoses? that's your second complaint? that goes back to earlier when you have any engine out, replace everything. an exhaust is not a complaint, there are a million and a half exhaust places around who will make anything you want. i think you need to rethink what "complete" means to you. the car looks amazing though and looks like you did an amazing job. big props to you
@EatSleepDrive
@EatSleepDrive 6 жыл бұрын
My counter to that is look at all the ads where people are selling their unfinished 'projects.' I think a lot of people take these kinds of things on without knowing how much is truly involved. That's all I was trying to say in this video. It's not that it's impossible without proper planning, it's just that most people would underestimate the amount of work. Simply put a majority of people that would say it's easy have never done an engine swap.
@CanadaBud23
@CanadaBud23 6 жыл бұрын
They're just lazy, end of story. It's not hard, it may be labour intensive but all that stuff is completely expected. Unless you know the history of the engine and comfortable with that going in as is you can save yourself some work. But you should be giving that motor a rebuild regardless if you plan to modify it in any way.

hahahaha... I did a vlog on Rabbit holes.. I find this more car related in general but man your right about how I got this off its just x amount less if i do y now vs later. I tried to minimize down time by having fuel pump installed and my tomei 2way installed before I even touched the KA to pull out. I also HIGHLY recommend ordering all your parts that you can think of first... BUT like you said.. other things pop up here and there. For me so far, its really only been the shifter. This weekend my engine has oil pressure and did the first start up. rev'd up and was super smooth for the 5 sec I ran it. went to the auto parts to buy radiator lines heater hoses etc and left with just the hoses running up to 80 bucks. Trying to get the best preform as I can. the passenger side of the engine bay is starting to get really busy.. haha. I still have so many videos to push out on my swap as well.

Very nice car and looks like you did a great job on the swap man. But I have to say, every single point you've made pertains to any swap project. Whether its JZ, VG, LS, whatever it is. If its a used engine you will be a lucky bastard to not find problems. You'll have to have things custom made, especially exhaust and hoses. And the snowball effect of performance upgrades goes for any engine that is out of the car. Also accessories like alternators and starters should be replaced on any used engine unless you know where it came from and they've been replaced recently. And for the space in the engine bay, if you put long tube headers on a C5 corvette, that steering column is so close that for most brands you have to put an indentation in the header for the column to have clearance. It isn't much different from the car it came out of.

My working theory is that LS Swap enthusiasm is partly a carryover from hot rodders who’ve been stuffing small block Chevys into everything under the sun since the late 1950s. As engine swaps got, the SBC swap IS legit one of the simplest & most cost effective ways to get more power into old iron. It’s a great engine, it’s simple, been around forever & has tons of OEM and aftermarket support. The LS is also a great engine (and it is also well-supported) but LS swaps are a lot more difficult, expensive & require substantially more knowledge than SBC swaps. LS swaps can be awesome, but they’re orders of magnitude more complicated than the kind of engine swaps old school gear heads are accustomed to.

Ryan Bennett nice one! I started swapping engines at about 15, easy but time consuming and most of my swaps are not offered in complete kits or any kits, doing the wiring for aftermarket ECUs is such a pain.

TIM VK 1/2 Commodore, MK5 Cortina, were the LS1 swaps cost well it was 13 years ago so not relevant now around 3-5 k each. My 2GR FE swap is up around the 64k mark now but I dont have much time to do the work myself. (Nzd)

I could but it would be very short. I phoned www.wiringspecialties.com/ and they hooked me up with a custom harness. It was money well spent in my opinion because I had no interest in trying to figure all that out.

Thanks for subscribing! This is an LS1. Honestly not sure on 0-60 but it should run 12's with decent tires(has crap tires on now that came with the car). I plan to go to the drag strip in the spring to find out.

What's the wheel and tire setup? I picked up a set of RPF1s for my S14 recently, and I'm trying to decide on tires. I'd like to do 275s square, but the offset will have to be JUST right in order to work.

i hear ya dude, goes for many other motor swaps too with lots of kits available, when i swapped a boss 302 into my 92 Ranger, the swap headers from headman headers were very compact but i still had to cut a small bit off the frame, modify the steering box location and piss around with the trans tunnel.

Mean Man well you sure in the hell Google and hope you can find what you need has been designed don't ya? Cuz at one point everything for these swaps didn't exist at all and now a bunch of stuff does for different swaps . so from what this guy says exhaust doesn't exist pre fabbed , maybe next year summit will be selling the exhaust for this swap. Not sure how the hell this guy was whining, he just informed me of some shit I didn't need to know but maybe helped someone else. Fuck maybe now he'll be the one to make a way more in-depth DVD . lol. At least he did it. His shit is beautiful. Where's your swap? I'm gonna guess you haven't done one, kind of eliminates your right to. comment negatively.

Lol. It definitely not easy if you have zero experience. ALL of that "snowball" stuff was caused by poor planning. Plan and knock it out in a week tops. I swapped a 240 before there were kits and did it in 3weeks. It's ok that it took you longer but don't make lame excuses.

@salvadordollyparton666

Dick Mick I'm gonna plan on freshening up an engine i want to make power out of, and a v8 going in a small light car is a waste of time with an open rear end. Same with a bigger cam or other upgrades. Just common sense, to those of us who've actually turned wrenches our whole lives anyway, can't really speak for those who haven't. And if EVERY 20 or 30 minute job takes you 3 or 4 hours like he said, I'm guessing he may have cross threaded it himself. And duh, you're gonna need an exhaust. I've NEVER bought an exhaust system, and only had one done for me which was when i was 16 and didn't like how they did it so made my own from then on. Not that difficult if you practice. And if he's actually running to the hardware store for "parts", theres another flag. Point being, if you use your brain just a little you can map all this stuff out fairly easily beforehand. Kits for whatever should tell you what they come with, then you can pretty easily figure out what else you need. Of course you can't plan for every little thing all the time, but if you do just dive in and decide to throw an american v8 in place of a japanese 4 cylinder without any real thought to how its gonna work, yeah you'll end up with a lot of problems in your way. Anybody who thinks somethin like this is just bolt up paint by number kinda deal and actually work properly needs their head examined.

Good job on getting your swap done. I think one thing that a lot of younger people are not doing is talking to people who know their shit. You can’t watch KZbin videos and read blogs to learn how to do a swap. Call people that know what they are doing, call shops, invite people over. A case of beer and pizza can get 3 friends over working all day. That’s 32 man hours right there.
