For weeks I've been curious about these square stemmed, sticky and prickly plants that popped up in my backyard. Now I know its galium and I'm looking forward to some coffee!

With cleavers, Galium, also a juice like my newly discovered nettle juice is excellent. Very fresh green taste.

I call the Galium "cleavers", I love the tea and even it raw or juice it.

That's what I knew them as, as well. I've also run into some glabrous ones here... haven't figured out if they are edible... probably are.... on my long list of things to do. I hadn't considered a tea, but why not?

For sure.... they are getting past season here. It's amazing what one can juice. Send me an email and I will tell you quite a tale of a recent juicing event.

Hooray!! I have 4 sycamore trees in my yard. I'll have to find out how to extract the sap.

Bedstraw is a galium, Field Madder is a Sherardia, a close relative. They can be confusing. Galium's blossoms are green, yellow or white, madder's blossoms are lilac to pink. Think MAD, pink face.

It's done the same way as with Maples, and Birches.

Bedstraw and cleavers are very confusing to me- I have heard bedstraw doesn't stick to you clothes and grows close to the ground and cleavers sticks and grows taller, is this right?

The real issue is the amount of those seeds. At some point one will reach the minimu m leathal dose.

Oddly enough, Galium is the only coffee substitute that comes close to the coffee flavor. No caffeine but.... flavor...They say persimmon seeds make a good coffee substitute.... I like persimmons but don't you believe it.
