www.eattheweeds... The Blue Porterweed is a staple of butterfly gardens throughout the world, but it has uses as a beverage and a salad ingredient.

@pleaseteachmeman Most of the plants I do videos on an on my website are in your area. I teach in West Palm Beach and Port Charlotte. The plants are there, particulary blue porterweed.

I work in a butterfly conservatory and we have this growing all over the place. It was seen as a 'useless' plant compared to others we grow. I've found however that our birds eat the bottom leaves (they leave a little triangle beak marks!), and they also eat the flowers. Interestingly, ours grows about 4 inches a day and is currently about 20 feet tall. We have to do massive trims once a week to keep it under control.

Hey Deane, I have found that the porterweed will self seed and propagate readily in warm climates. One plant bought 20 years ago has beget hundreds to be left behind at various homesites over the years...good to know it has foraging potential--thanks!

@docsimonson That's a subjective amount. Make a tea first and get to know the flavor.

I have what I believe is purple porter weed, (some of the plants are 12 feet high & butterflies love them) can that be used the same as blue? Florida Keys

if anyone could survive 2012, it would be you because you know what to eat and how. plus many people think chomping on plants like dandelions and nettles is weird and they wouldnt do it themselves

How much of the leaf would it take to make a five gallon batch of beer? I live in Southern New Jersey which is a giant sand dune and pine forest. It would make a terrific plant on the border of my yard, and even potted in my vegetable garden. I'm trying to coax honey bees to my garden and butterfly bush does not happily grow here. Thanks for a really great video!

If you put all your vids on a DVD I'd pay $20-$30 for it easy.
