About the sarcasm.. I've seen Super Junior Eunhyuk answering a question sarcastically once, and the other members didn't seem to get it hahaha He said that he wanted to be Siwon for one day so he could experience what it is to be ugly. And the others were like trying to correct him and it just made me laugh even more XDDD

We have 5 Chinese international students at my Prep school in America. It's a really tiny school (less than 200 students) and it's kind of an everyone knows everyone situation, so our teachers can be really loose about their humor and the way they speak around students because they know them so well. Our athletic director really likes his sarcasm.. and he tends to use it around the international students a little too often. So many misunderstandings. So very many.

I still have korean friends so I can't be that bad :DD but it does create confusing feelings and misunderstandings if you're using sarcasm when you're not expected to be joking (arguing/discussing something serious/not in a good mood) AND especially if the other person can't see your facial expressions!! as long as they can see from your face that it's a joke I think you're fine

Xxharukapanda Yeah, when I first came here, Americans really didn't get my humor. Kenyan humor has a lot of disses. Me and my African friends diss each other all the time. I remember my roommate introduced me to her friend and I was like "Oh, she's the bitch!" Everyone froze and I was like I'm kidding... guys... Among my friends we would laugh about it and make it a joke while knowing the person is indeed a bitch but because everyone froze, it made it super awkward. The awkward laughing didn't make it any better. ._.

If I ever go to Korea, I'm screwed. Maybe 70% of what I say to friends is sarcastic, and all of us use sarcasm SO MUCH, we occasionally can't tell if someone is serious or not, it's sooooo bad. Seeing someone overreact is funny, but I can't do it myself :P

I understand that they are talking about the general trends (which is totally valid), and I personally hate the people that do the "OH YEAH? But I have an example..." But I had a boyfriend who was born and raised in Seoul, he came over to the US when he was 13 with his family. He was the MOST obnoxiously sarcastic person I've ever met. The day he asked me out, he said "you're so sarcastic it's horrible. I love it." So...there IS hope ;)

One thing I really hate about gag concert or koreanSNL is that they make fun of obese/ugly women a lot! I mean I don't find making fun of people's appearance that funny (actually I dont think anyone should find it funny) but apparently a lot of koreans love that kind of stuff. And it's so true that they don't get sarcasm. It's literally so embarrassing/frustrating when someone doesnt get your sarcasm and you are just standing there awkwardly, trying to explain that you werent actually being serious lol
@이예원-u1k9 жыл бұрын
Katherine Kim It's not that people make fun of fat or ugly people.. it's because they're funny. It's just hard to explain
@김가영-x3r9 жыл бұрын
Laura Lee I dont think you got my point though. I'm not saying that they are not funny. I'm saying that when you're watching Gag Concert or Korean SNL or whatever, it's easy to spot fat people or ugly people are playing a role as someone who's not desirable to men. Like, they actually use "the fact that certain person doesn't meet the body image that WE desire" in a negative way - something that is not acceptable according to our beauty standard - to make people laugh. And that, in my opinion, is not right.
@pepsipark40819 жыл бұрын
Katherine Kim I agree with you. I watch some variety shows, so I've gotten used to a lot of their mannerisms, but one thing that I can NEVER find funny (it's actually such a turnoff) is making fun of age and appearances. It's so rude....you can tell some people are really hurt on the inside even when they're trying to laugh it off.
@이예원-u1k9 жыл бұрын
Katherine Kim yes you can see lots of ugly and fat people but it's not only Korean programs that do that.. also they won't just laugh at the person because he/she is ugly or fat just like what anto wud
@junghunpark76599 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with you even though i'm korean
@geminiproject06210 жыл бұрын
That last point was really accurate! The thing about how variety show humor (I've only seen Japanese variety shows not Korean but they sound similar based on your description) being exaggerated and inviting you to laugh even if you don't know the language versus North American humor that I think is VERY MUCH based on words, tone, and knowing the language and culture. I think even if a friend of mine didn't understand what exactly was going on in a Korean or Japanese variety show they'd still smile at what's going on, but on the flip side if someone who didn't understand English tried to watch stand-up or a skit it wouldn't be as easy to get into it, since our humor requires a lot of tonal sarcasm that even I couldn't really grasp when moving back from Taiwan to the US for college.

Sarcasm is life for me. I couldn't live without it. But yeah, most Korean humor isn't humorous for me. Some of the things they do, yes, but verbal jokes, no. It's probably just a cultural and language barrier that doesn't make me understand.
@kerryoke6810 жыл бұрын
I can confirm this is 100% TRUE regarding sarcasm. When I lived in Koreatown I went to a Korean meetup. Even after going a few times and getting along with everyone, I made a joke to the girl next to me imitating my friend who came along. I did his voice speaking Korean badly (trust me, in context you would have gotten it) and she just stared at me and said "You should not speak informally to me." The comedy was sucked out of the room. I felt so bad. I said. "Oh no. I wasn't speaking TO you. I was speaking AS him talking to the other person." She just stared and said "You shouldn't do that." Finally I decided to just act like an old Korean lady and turn it on her. "Hey. I'm 42, you're 19. Would you tell a Korean ahjumma to speak formally to you?" She got all scared and said, "I'm sorry." with a half bow! I said, "I'm kidding! You're not in trouble." Gah After that I realized that Koreans have a great sense of humor, you just have to get a feel for it an it generally doesn't involve any kind of role play or heavy sarcasm, at last not from foreigners at this point. I have found though that dry humor is not lost on them if you make a stone face. When someone in the group asked me why I want to go to Korea I said very seriously, "I'm planning on becoming a K-pop sensation. Yeah I'm starting a girl group with other ahjummas. We're called "Aigoo-centric".
@dylanakent9 жыл бұрын
What you're describing about Korean humor is very much like what was considered "acceptable humor" in North America in the 1950's and 1960's that you'd find on prime time variety shows. There was a lot of role switching humor, basic jokes and the sexual humor was very tame - they used to call it "blue humor". It's really tame/lame stuff compared to what is in USA, Canada, Australia/NZ and the UK now. Korean humor will probably evolve/devolve ? (depending on your viewpoint) in several decades as the culture changes. Really helpful and interesting tip to avoid sarcasm. And that shoe prank - wow...that's creative in a completely group psychopathic way. I don't know what I would have done in that situation.
@VampireKnight03319 жыл бұрын
Korean humor was definitely a culture shock after first watching variety and dramas. The animated editing, like the sweat bullets, and the other cheesy stuff was pretty annoying at first, and also them writing everything in Korean at the bottom, almost every phrase being written when it was literally just said. Though definitely over time the humor and variety editing has grown on me a lot. Varieties at first were pretty hard to watch but now it's one of my favorite things to do.
@Paula4959 жыл бұрын
+VampireKnight0331 I totally agree with you. When I first started watching Korean variety shows, I found it so weird and cheesy, but now it is the thing that will make me laugh the most. Western shows don't make me laugh as much anymore. I not only started to understand and enjoy the humor, but my sense of humor changed as well. And I don't regret anything. :)
@VampireKnight03319 жыл бұрын
Paula495 I think that most people have gone through this change. Most westerners don't have this sense of humor, but then after watching enough Korean dramas and varieties, the humor gets added into the everyday humor that the western kpop fans use.

I'm planning on going to teach English in Korea for a few years after graduating college and I can tell right now I will have such a hard time toning down my sarcasm. I never use *mean* rude sarcasm, but I frequently use sarcasm in a sassy or teasing way ("Did you like it?" *looks down at my practically licked-clean plate* "no, I hated it.") I basically speak in pure sarcasm at times, hahaha. But at the same time I also love Korean variety shows and often find myself absolutely cracking up. It's been a while since I started watching Korean variety shows/reality shows/dramas/etc., so I don't really know if I liked that type of humor even before, but I know that now I absolutely love it.

So I know this lady who usually sells me Thai tea. One time, I saw something new and bought a cup. Before I even got to take a sip, she asked me how was the drink. So then I take a sip and immediately respond, "It's good!" because it WAS good! She looked so disappointed so I was confused for a while. Now it hit me that I probably responded too fast so it probably seemed like I lied.. I only did so cause she wanted an answer so I wanted to respond right away after I took a sip.. plus I had somewhere to be so I was in a rush. In addition, maybe it's cause I didn't exaggerate how good it tasted. It was really good! No lie! It was probably better than her thai teas.. ever since that day, I never saw that new drink again. Ohhh they wouldn't like Australian humour then haha But then most people from other countries, specially America, dislike our humour. It's very sarcastic and offensive, we make fun of each other all the damn time. Hell you can tell whose your close mate if they insult daily haha. We Australians are definitely not politically correct

This videos does not accurately describe Korean humor. Most of the really funny Korean humor is in the language and based off of cultural/social hierarchy structure of Korea which is harder to understand by foreigners. The humor described in the video is what I would call level 1 humor where it's just superficial jokes and body gags. This is same for American humor where you have to understand a lot about popular media to understand references of stand up comedy. One thing mentioned in the video that is true is that Korean humor is much cleaner than American humor and less obscene to reach the same level of humor.

I did a Korean style joke with exaggeration in class (I live in America) because I've been influenced by Koran variety shows. It completely failed and it even turned out embarrassing. It was cold in the classroom so my teacher told us to get our sweaters if we were cold and I asked her if I could get my jacket. That was part one of my lame joke and a classmate asked , "Was that supposed to be a joke?" I left the classroom and returned with my jacket and hat laughing in the silent classroom. Everyone, including the teacher, thought I was insane and some classmates started fake laughing as a joke. Then when I sat down, I put on my jacket and hat on. That made people think I'm absolutely insane and I learned my lesson about the difference of humor in Korea and that of America.

I'm Korean and I thought we had sarcasm in our jokes... was it just me? lol cause I mostly do sarcastic jokes around my Korean friends and they get it. And they do it too. Some Korean jokes... I find it funny but many I don't. same for Western. I actually like most of the standing comedy shows... but other than that... the ones like knock knock and yo mama jokes... I still don't get them. Back then.. I thought it was because of my English but it's still not funny after 10 years. lol And many Koreans find American standing comedy shows funny too. There are many subtitled comedy shows on youtube and I see many Koreans like them.

Yes. Koreans have sarcasm in the jokes in my opinion. I think that's because many of foreigners can't get sarcasm in Korean... It's hard to understand the humor of the other's language, even if the one is kinda good at Korean. But usually it's easier to get physical humor.

I've been watching variety shows and Korean movies for so long that my humour has sort of changed. I find myself laughing to shows like Running Man over Australian comedic shows. Also, I did enjoy that one episode where you guys guested on RM, ages ago.

Can I ask a question here... So to start out I'm British I'm no stranger to sarcasm. But when I was in Korea, I noticed a lot of, not rude per se, but dry attitude from people. Like they'll say hi in a really cheery and friendly way, soon as something else is said, cold as fuck. Anyone else noticed that?
@김대리-z2i9 жыл бұрын
the reason is so simple, those korean just fear to speak in english, as you know , typical korean are too shy to speak in english when their english not perfectly good enough, i swear that almost all of them never have negative thinking toward you, just fear

DavidsonLoops did you make sure the people you met in korea were fully able to communicate with you in english? if they weren't, they probably got so nervous speaking english to a native english speaker and ended up giving you some short sentences in turn, which can look like dry attitude.

I actually like Korean humor a lot and Asian humor in general, and it's really hard to explain to my family why I laugh in front of what they consider "weirdly immature(?)" humor. Also, you guys talked about the "replays" (at 4:14) and that reminds me of when I watched my first Korean show ever, Hello Baby; even if I was already into Asia at the time, it wasn't like the replays shocked me or annoyed me; most of the time, it actually made me laugh, and I... don't actually understand why.

I LOVE VARIETY SHOWS!!! It's true though, not a lot of sarcasm. I feel like western comedians tend to go through the whole stand up phase hence humor tends to be more verbal and situation based while in Korea, they have like the comedy exam, etc. However, I find Korean skits to be way funnier. SNL in the U.S is shit! However, Gag Concert is one of my fave shows for their ability to create good skits and a variety of characters. Far funnier than SNL. However, Louis CK, Chris Rock and George Carlin (RIP) are just super hilarious! Dave Chapelle show had gold moments.

In Korea, you must not make a joke with their parents because it's biggest insulting in Korean culture. Korean culture is base on confucianism, and respecting parents is on of ground rule of confucianism. if somebody make a joke about their parents they going to be not only upset, they will be fury about it. it's like same level of making joke about Muhammad in Mosque
@rosemajeed567310 жыл бұрын
Wait!!!jokes about Mohammed the prophet ...well of course you can't because he is a great man so you can't come and make jokes about him cause you may not know islam or know it but don't care about so you can't ...it's like coming to a church and tell jokes about jesus which is totally wrong!! Even if you are not Christian you should not make fun about what you don't know so you have to respect jesus as well respect Mohammed
