Dazzle Koi - Koi keeping Help & Advice

Күн бұрын

I reviewed the Evolution Aqua Eazy (Easy) Pod Air koi pond filter system a couple of months after purchase and had nothing but good things to say about the little filter.
Today after 5 months of ownership I feel I'm better placed to comment so I'm back with this quick update on life with the Pod.
I'll briefly go over the maturation process as well for anyone thinking of buying an Eazy Pod.
But after 5 months of day to day ownership will I still be as impressed with the filter or will the novelty have worn off???

I really like the simplicity of your set up. Very ergonomic. Everything is within within reach. So true about reviews that you actually have to own one for months of using it for accuracy. Also seeing over the long run is believing. That is why I really like your channel.

Really enjoy your videos. I run two Eazy Pods as supplemental filtration and for water polishing on my 20,000 ltr koi pond. Although the primary filtration is gravity feed through a 4" bottom drain the feed lines to the Eazy Pods run as an offshoot (about 3500 ltr per hour) from the pump feed water return lines and in turn are gravity feed back to the pond. Great little filters. Easy to install and even easier to clean.

Hi mate, yes totally agree. They get a bit of stick sometimes and I think a lot of the time people try to run them on ponds that are to big or with to many fish, or they don't set the flow rate right. If you stay within its limitations and run the correct flow they are great little filters. The big thing for me is the ease of cleaning that you elude to. I flush mine every evening when I get home from work and go to check the koi. If it wasn't so quick and easy to do it wouldn't get done so often and waste in the filter is waste in the pond as far as I'm concerned.

Hi Daz, I think the majority of folk think that eazipods are fit and forget, sit in a deck chair and that's your lot and then moan. But as we all know keeping water clean and healthy is nearly a full time job. Eazi pod seemed to have crack the easiness though instead of washing brushes up the garden with a sodding hosepipe every few days, emptying chambers and generally pissing about all the time. The biggest killer to me is my south facing garden, nice but a pain in the arse as always in full sun. Like you, you have to have a screen or a sail otherwise, basically you are filtering the sun's green monster every day and not the water. I've been ponding for 30 years and faffing with a 150 box is a pain in the arse. Eazi pod is my next purchase. Nice review mucka.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Жыл бұрын
Hi mate and thank you. I feel your pain with the sun, I'm in the same boat. My pond is tiny and should (according to the rule of thumb) only need a 10W UV. I fitted an 18W, green as hell, I then went to a EA 25W, still green. I then added the 18W back in line after the 25W and it still didn't cope. In the end I had to go to an EA 55W to get it clear. That's ridiculous for a 1000 gallon pond. The direction it faces and I'm also sure the window has a big effect. I put that sail up but to be honest it doesn't cast a single bit of shade on the water at any point during the day. My pond is always clear now but the water that comes out of the pod when I flush it every night is thick green so its constantly taking algae out.

@@DazzleKoi I went for a All pond solutions 36 W last summer with 770 GPH running through it to my 12.7 Gallon cyclone then through a 3 chamber 100 gallon filter, also a Oase 5500 running through cyclone and the filter. Brushes are full within 4/5 days, 2 in the cyclone, 6 in first chamber. I have 6 knackered discs and a trapped sciatic nerve, it's bloody murder.

Nice review on the pod. Interesting how easy you got it matured. How much were you feeding each day in the summer? I installed my pod last year and it was a nightmare to get mature, my PH was higher than yours. I do accept my inexperience and overstocking the pond far too quickly made matters worse. That said, it works great now. I do have a moving bed and shower after now. Couldn't get parameters under control untill the shower went in. but it keeps my 1200 gallons pond crystal clear. I also have an ea 25w uv and it's worked great.

Hi Dan, I fed Quality Nishikigoi Premium growth food last year. In terms of how much, because of lockdown and being at home a lot of the time they where fed around 6 or 7 times some days. If my wife and I where both able to work they got 3 or 4 feeds a day. For the first few weeks it was more like 2 or 3 times though. A lot of my ease of maturing it comes down to the pH though. Its a different kettle of fish entirely if you have pH of 8 or over. It takes much much longer then.

what is the green hose that goes to your return. Is it a pond filler and how does it know when to replenish? Thanks, Larry
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, sorry for the late reply, it is my trickle in. It has an isolator which is set to give me the flow I want and it T's in to the filter return. I dont use any dechlorinating filter so I add it after my pond eazy pod top avoid subjecting my filter bacteria to chlorine. I used a normal garden hose as it doesn't tend to burst when it freezes as it is stretchy. Winters here are not particularly cold so its only the odd day here and there that it freezes.

Useful video thank you. It seems everyone bypasses the UV that comes with it, is it not really strong enough for a 8000litre pond? Trying to work out what I’ll do thanks.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, because the UV creates a restriction in the inlet it stops you being able to use the pod gravity fed so if you are not going to use it I would avoid the versions with it in. You are right to, its not up to the job of keeping 8000 litres clear but to be honest the pod itself isn't really for ponds that big. I would look at a nexus for that or if you have the pod already, add a shower or even a moving bed to it.

Hi Phil, I have the Eazy Pod Air model which is basically a Pod bundled with an air pump and the pump that comes bundled with it is an EA 70 so that will be perfect. It runs your drain or air source to your pond 24/7 and you divert it to the pod to bubble the K1 for cleaning.

Hi Daz. Do you cover your pond in winter with polyurethane sheets? Where did you get your sun sail from? Looking for something similar. Once again great info
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, no I don't cover. I want to see them all year round to keep a good eye on them and also I like them to have a good cold snap to reset everything. It doesn't get particularly cold here so its rare to get water freezing or anything like that but this year I did see some ice crystals on the window and the return starting to freeze a bit. I think I might put a little inline electric heater in before next winter just to keep it from dropping below 2 or 3 C. The shade sail just came from amazon , I think it was less than £40. If you need pole look for scaffolding poles. Ones sold as shade sail poles are about £70 each and the exact same pole sold as scaffolding poles are about £20.

Hi mate, glad its not just me thinking some uv's are rubbish, I outed my 2x tmc 55w units this year and put a single amalgum 80w in my sieve, what a difference. Just a quick one, what's your thoughts to covering ponds to hold temps, not sure if its worth making a vid about it but its one of those never ending debatable questions as to whether or not koi should be given a proper winter. I get the benefits of heating and have personally been heated for 16 years, my koi have never seen lower then 13.5c but nature never provided them with an air source heat pump so would be interesting to hear your thoughts on it, cheers mate
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I think the amalgam units are the rolls Royce of UV's. They are sterilisers rather than clarifiers so they work at a different wavelength and have some anti bacterial benefits 👍👍 People usually make covers from polycarbonate which if you look at the material properties for it you'll see it has zero insulation properties. As such they don't insulate at all. All they really do is keep wind off and so prevent some wind chill effect. You need to leave space for gases to escape and you need to angle them so that condensation runs away rather than back in to the pond. Condensation dripping in to the pond creates a region of concentrated nasties which can harm your koi. It acts like a still basically. As such they are more trouble than they are worth to me, particularly if you don't have a window as you cant check on the koi daily. I don't personally heat anymore and that's mainly a cost issue. I simply don't have the disposable income I used to have. Not heating isn't an issue to me as I keep on top of cleanliness, oxygen and circulation so I don't have issues. If you fall short on either of those though spring can be a dangerous time.

@@DazzleKoi I see. Can the easy pod be used for purging the bottom drain when waste left to open and easy pod refilled?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, the eazy pod inlet is 3" so if you have a 3" bottom drain and 3" pipework all the way to the pod then yes it will purge the line when you open up to refill the pod after a clean. Its only if you have a 4" drain that it isn't purged as the velocity through a 4" line is very low due to the 3" restriction at the pod inlet. If you have a 3" bottom drain it wont really need purging anyway as the flow through it is fast enough to keep it clean and free of settlement.

@DazzleKoi

Hi Wayne, I found the optimum flow to be 5500 litres per hour. It is important that you get it close to this as if not it wont function optimally. Pulling too much flow is the reason why some people complain that they get fines with it. Get the flow right though and it works brilliantly 👍
