Nice portrayal of Bengali Hindu bhadralok culture where daughter’s husband ie son-in-law is treated like semi king by girl’s parents; son in law/daughter’s husband is seen as some kind of semi god whose commands are to be obeyed at all cost, irrespective of whatever hardship it may inflict upon girl/wife’s parents-from relentless demand of unfair dowry/jahez to never ending demand for continuing material benefits to the detriment of daughters’ parents’ wellbeing and burdening of undue financial hardship, where girl’s parents would be compelled to comply with requests for fear that their daughter would face hardship and curse from husband and his family. The dowry/jahez and caste-based discrimination system is Indian subcontinent’s Hindu Vedic’s notorious legacy which continues thrive to date despite being outlawed. Worse, even Muslims of Indian subcontinent (ie India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) are some way influenced by this medieval centuries old cultural Vedic injustices (majority of South Asian Muslims, like the Malays and Indonesians, are descendants of Hindu ancestors who converted to Islam between 12th - 18th century yet could not forego all of the Hindu cultural unjust practices). Hindu cultural injustices often leaves no option but many Bengali Hindus and others at times feel they are on the edge where religion comes to solace (in the above drama case, Durga Puja, centred around the belief of Durga Goddess). Yet the dichotomy remains; there the same Hindu Vedic religion and culture that is often looked upon for solace and resolve have become a bastion for contradictory unjust practices passed down through generations. Nice direction by the director, showing the cultural intricacies and nuances of Bengali Hindu culture that gives away many subtle messages, among them hardship, managing financial and cultural conflicting demands, being persevere when the going gets tough, albeit deferring others or religion for resolve. There’s also reflection of day to day Bengali Hindu culture, not least too much budgeting, thinking too rigidly and being too practical when it comes to accommodating guests ie when guest comes, the host does mental calculation of space and resources etc. However recent decades show that Bengali Hindus of Bangladesh have become more flexible and generous; more accommodating and gradual adopting of Bangladeshi Bengali Muslim culture of generosity and charitable openness compared to their India’s West Bengal’s Bengali Hindu bhadralok counterparts.
