I bought a GTX 690 from ebay for around €20, it was water damaged and the part of the PCI express connector was all burnt up. Luckily it was just the power delivery pins, I was able to remove some of the burnt circuit board, pull up the power traces and solder a wire that jumped to the 8pin power connector. And sucess! It works flawlessly, I dont use it in my main rig, but it happily sits in my old i7 2600k build just in case. I would love to get a second GTX 690 and run them in Quad SLI just for shits and giggles. @zanderxymox6 жыл бұрын
I was lucky enough to get one of these for my personal system a couple years ago. It was a very powerful card, but the blower fan was insanely loud and made me sweat even in the winter. Thankfully though I saw the need for these cards and turned an initial $150 into $350 during the mining craze :) nice little $200 profit off this old beast. Now it's making someone else's room a little hotter here in the summer time.
@henrywehrmann4296 жыл бұрын
My XFX aftermarket cooler takes my R9 290x down to "acceptable" temperatures around 70-80 degrees. Definitely worth it. Its super surprising that the card didn't just throttle its clock speed to compensate for the temperature. If there are no hardware failures this is super weird as I have seen my 290x throttle down when it tries to draw too much power.
@KiraSlith6 жыл бұрын
Overheating like that sounds like faulty on-board power management, which could lead to the chip getting 12v instead of the 1.2-4v most high speed logic uses. I'd suggest poking at the capacitors (Probably Tantalum SMDs knowing modern hardware) with a multimeter and checking bare PCB photos online against your card to see if you are missing components.
@RandomGaminginHD6 жыл бұрын
Nice :) thanks for the advice
@TheVacras6 жыл бұрын
MortifiedDumplin wouldn’t anything supposed to run on ~1.3V pretty much blow up instantly when it receives 12V?
@KiraSlith6 жыл бұрын
Tryhardus Not necessarily if the amperage restrictions are still working. 12v@0.025v wouldn't quite instantly fry the chip, but it would leave it consistantly running hot and inevitably damage the silicon processor. Either way it's just one possibility of many considering how complex VRM can get at times, for all I know, it could be a dead short to ground in the VRM or elsewhere entirely, or a fused capacitor vital to voltage smoothing, or something else entirely. Thus my broad stroke suggestion.
@CallumDavis_6 жыл бұрын
The 290 just notoriously runs hot. Best would be to try to undervolt

Two additional things: Along with the aftermarket cooler, consider also replacing whatever thermal pads come with the aftermarket with ones from FujiPoly. They are very high performance thermal pads. And when you plug in the card to the power supply, use separate cables to the 6-pin and 8-pin. Don't use the "pigtail" connector. That'll ensure you have pretty stable power delivery as well, which should help stability.

I had an R9 200 with double fans that would overheat. The problem was that the lubricant in one of the fans had dried up and the fan wasn't getting enough rounds-per-minute. It was also, stupidly, a fan that was welded shut, so I couldn't just prise it open. Soooo, I ended up drilling a hole in the back of it with a 2mm drill until I reached the shaft or ball bearings or whatever that part is called, put a few drops of silicon-based oil in there and closed it up with gaffer tape. Worked just fine then.

I think it would be cool if you did a mid way update video on the effects of undervolting and underclocking to reduce heat output and improve stability of the card. I run my 480 8g at 1200mhz and -200mv to reduce heat in the summer time and crank it back to stock in the winter because it runs about 75-60c at about 65-78f ambient winter-summer.

The "cooler" pretty much either works or doesn't. You have the coldplate with the thermal pads over the mosfets and memory chips and you have the copper heatsink that sits over the cpu. On the other side you have the radiator and vapor chamber. Very little to go wrong except the fan not working. The cooling fins clogged with crap or the die area not contacting the copper plate properly.

Personally I have this same problem but with a r7 260x which runs hot even if I change the termal paste and the termal pads, even with a fan at full speed cooling the card by the side doesn't help... I haven't found what causes this issue yet but... I found a "temporal" solution which is undervolting it... undervolting the card with in the AMD Radeon Settings -> Games -> Global Settings -> Global Wattman and lowering the mV for the GPU helped me to reduce the overhiting from 80-100° (depending on the game) to 73°C at max in the most demanding titles that this Video Card can run... but ofc you lose some horsepower I hope this help you at least to make some tests or use the video card without issues and thank you very much for the videos man you are awesome!

In 2012 I bought a Radeon 5770 that hadn't "been tested" in its description. I received the card in its original box but no anti-static bag?! Plugged the card in, but it was running HOT. Replaced the thermal paste... and it was fine. I got a $150 card for $30. I mined the piss out of that card, bought a Gigabyte Windforce R9 290 just before bitcoin prices crashed in 2013. Mined the R9 290 into 3x XFX RX 580's 8GBs. Used those three RX 580's to buy two more MSI Vega 64's. I haven't paid for a video card in cash since that $30 chance on that 5770! As for my time with the R9 290. Undervolt it. Radeon cards can EASILY take a 100mV undervolt (the Vega's I can undervolt by 150mV), and it will lower temps and keep the cards nice and stable.

Reflash the vbios! I purchased a few “non working”. “For parts”. “Unstable”. And “no video output” cards and in 80% of the cases all it ever was was the last owner installed and unstable miner vbios on the cards... either partially corrupted/completely corrupted or just a bad version/mismatched version. For AMD cards from this general era, HD7xxx series all way up to R9-3xx series is usually down to someone flashing the bios with different memeory timings or wrong memory subsystem. I had an R9-390X I found vbios flashed was mismatched with the physical hardware. Example is SYHynix flash with Micron physical memory. And it usually doesn’t result in no video usually results in black screens and crashes. 80% of my cards I recovered is down to bad vbios... reflash it and usually fixes it. Not always that simple but worth it. Just make sure you don’t reflash while that card is primary card, reflash it as secondary that way more stable and doesn’t crash during reflash which can sometimes spike it to 3D clocks if it’s primary. As for over heating, I suspect it’s a bad cooler. R9-290 is a very devilishly hot card specially from blower, but I suspect heat pipes or block is damaged in someway or warped enough not making proper contact and less that ideal surface area. R9-290 should ave around 80C on NT-H1 thermal paste.
@DigBipper1886 жыл бұрын

Sounds as though the previous owner flashed it to a 290x bios as I remember it was the trend at the time, also the little pads on the VRM's might need changing as the boards VRM's get quite toasty However you're getting a new cooler and it will have them with the cooler if bought relatively new .

I was doing the same with a Titan Xp (blower card), but it didn't seem to work as well. I really don't want to take it apart and void my warranty on a $1200 GPU though...
@KhainesKorner6 жыл бұрын
I honestly need something like that. I just rely on the childs toothbrush and IPA method. :)
@jakegarrett81096 жыл бұрын
Khaines Korner Oh yeah, it gets it almost completely dust free in just a few minutes. The toothbrush probably does a tiny bit better cleaning if you want it spotless.

Bro, get some decent thermal paste or liquid metal and some thermal pads

Buy some gelid gc extreme, I have an Gtx 980ti G1 gaming, before that I used Mx4 and I got max temps of 72° (not bad i know), but now with gelid i in the same game and settings have 60°. I was not expecting much from the paste, but i saw it in Tech Yes City KZbin Channel
@moritz33446 жыл бұрын
Tico2858 I followed your advice now it runs at 80 degree with 75% fan speed. Not that better but a bit
@Tico28586 жыл бұрын
Whatd you use? thermal paste or liquid metal? I bought a used r9 390 and it was running at 99c on %80 fan speed so I replaced all the thermal pads and put some thermal grizzly conductonaut now it runs at like 70c %60 fan speed under load, was a huge difference for me

i have a GTX 960 2 GIG having that issue.. as soon as u install the driver it dies... though from my testing and examine it dose not seem to be a heating issue..
@IJoeAceJRI6 жыл бұрын
How hot does it run
@MadDoggyca6 жыл бұрын
at the moment no higher then like 30c because the default SVGA driver dosen't get it to do anything.. the moment I put the driver it it dies... and I have to force the .ini file... because the NV driver dosen't even detect it..

Undervolt and underclock this puppy, it will still be a very capable card and the driver stunt was just brilliant! Also, the atrocious heat and power consumption will really go down. Congrats on the finding!

I run an R9 280x 3GB and It's still very relevant in 2018 absolutely smokes the RX460 it replaced and trades punches with 3GB 1060's all day. Best part is I got it for $60 and sold the RX480 for $80 and now people are selling the same card I bought for $160 or more lol

I'd absolutely recommend pairing an NZXT kraken g12 with a cheap compatible 120mm AIO. I did that with my 1070 and I went from low 80's on air to low 50's.

Just pray for the bga didnt got bad and when heated the expand and loose contact with the pcb. When the card heats itself too much, bga problems are pretty common.

Temperature isnt the issue here, The reference R9 290 has a temperature target of 95 degrees, That means it'll always try to run at 95 degrees to keep the fan rpm as low as possible :)
@Konamerp6 жыл бұрын
I feel like this card was bios modded with a voltage increase. Would explain the sudden jump in temperature after any kind of load.
@mohitvichare666 жыл бұрын
in this case i would recommend to use V-sync which would not stress the card completely. and one more thing set Temperature Limit in MSI Afterburner so that if the card reaches that limit it could throttle itself instead of shutting down to cool...

great work mate, i bought a faulty gtx 760 2gb for only 15 eu, replaced it bios with a stable version and get a banger of a card for only scrap money

I bought a defect R9 290 on the cheap once and couldn't get it to run. Fans spin up, but it doesn't get recognized in device manager (inserted along with another card) or generates an output at all. Still hoping to test it in a different System at some point, maybe with more success.

2 things... 1.install msi afterburner.. 2.use auto fan control and set a fairly aggressive fan curve that kicks in early and you'll never have heating issues.... I have a evga gtx 970 SC it hits max 55*c with ambient room temp around 65*f

Intredasting video! 😁 I've had a punt or two on sketchy parts and allways come out worse from it so I just don't bother anymore (only it's included in a bundle with working parts and the value is there). Hoping the follow up is a success :)

No Thermal pads on the Mosfets and also liquid in the cooling pipes on the heat sink has probably escaped due to a small crack in the solder.

it shouldn't crash, just throttle down. there's something actually faulty with the card. you could try to slightly underclock it, and undervolt it to get the rampant heat under control.
@TheRealFobican6 жыл бұрын
You should try that thing you probably do on a regular basis with things you have a certain skepticism about on arrival: apply new thermal paste in case of a cooking unit.
@ugh.idontwanna6 жыл бұрын
You should try having a go at undervolting it. More often than not you can get the temps down to something a lot more managable.

Good luck to you with your card resurrection. I was wondering about that cheap gray thermal paste you tried to use. Might want to clean off all the old garbage too?

I wold recommend re-flash the bios on the card withe factory R9 290 bios. som people flashed 290X boises on to this cards, ti may over volt the GPU and make it unstable. or the card could haw a old bitcoin mining bios on it not for gaming.

Having one of those is like having a 1060 that just runs hot. Used to have a 290X crossfire but one eventually started to fail with blue line on the side righr of screen after removing the aio I had for it, putting it in my new Ryzen systen from a Xeon X58, sad it was. I could never tell what really killed it. If it was my hands, the cooler heatsink behind it, the oily thermal pads left overs or the bios flashes that corrupted the frame buffer, I was basically bummed. But made the last 290X live long enough, still alive to this day as of now I have a Vega 64 however, I do stand by the fact the 2/3/90/X were and are still the best cards ever created just because of how damn good the support is. Can undervolt as well be much colder with fps caps. Does really good in vulkan and dx12, it actually destroys the 980 and 1060 in low level api's which obliterate the 780ti which was meant to compete against, or the 970 who had an optimization edge at the time.

I just got one of these. Mine is from XFX. Same problems tho. The things i did to permanently fix it were: go to techpowerup; database; vga bios.... enter the correct specs and update the bios. Everything is fixed now. If you want try it, but first update only the second bios, and if everything goes perfect, update the first one as well. I recommend you install teamviewer for easy access if your screen goes black in the updating process. Install teamviewer, log to your account(important!), grant easy access(recommended). Hope it helps!

Are you planning to make a second video with some kind of better cooling to further test the card and see if you can actually get the issues sorted? That'd be a great video imo, also love your channel. Don't know how I've never seen your channel before, but since recently I've sat and watched through a bunch of your videos, always looking forward to the next :o
