EBAY Parts Caused Ford Truck IDLE Problem? ('92 F150)

This 1992 Ford F150 V8 had a used EBay Throttle Body installed due to a rusted coolant line.
Now the truck is refusing to idle, and sets a code for the TPS sensor.
The shop played some swaptronics, and is giving up on the old Ford.
Can we fix it NO PARTS REQUIRED?

I actually still have 2 early obd cars and I actually like the old paper clip diagnostic method... mostly because 99% of the time the code pretty much tells you what's actually wrong with the car rather than leading you on a chicken chase through the various systems and sensors. One of our cars blinked out a message recently that said EGR valve malfunction... and amazingly enough when I tested the EGR diaphragm it was blown....The old OBD systems didn't throw a lot of codes, but when they did they usually gave you useful information and all you needed was a paper clip to read the codes. I know I'm getting old because I remember hating on board computers when they first came out and now I look back on them *almost* fondly.... how sad.

OBD 1.. When you really wanna teach someone how spoiled we are now. But the basics are there and with service data, and an old school red brick, you'll learn alot. There is limited live data on there. These old systems don't have redundant systems, so when 1 major sensor fails, it has no idea what to do.

YOU guys are missing the shops main point>TO MAKE PROFIT< how much more money did they make buy selling the guy a new throttle body 200 ???And on the legal side of it ,that's a legit charge,because a rusted out pipe IS PART of the body.IF they would have REMOVED that pipe and did a repair THEY would then be liable if the car overheated or had ANY cooling issues and blew the motor.LET'S say the owner was smart enough and crooked and PULLED the pipe off,AND CLAIMED THEIR repair FAILED.SMALL CLAIMS court says they would owe him a motor.I KNOW that"s BS but it could happen ,just saying.I"M just saying the shop was TRYING to cover their ass,maybe.great job as always IVAN>

@@robertoruiz7069 That's why I enjoy Ivan's repairs. NPR. If you don't understand the problem you can't fix it. I think it's more about time vs reward. It just takes so long to figure out how something has failed. It's more cost effective to replace the suspect components, plus the markup on parts. Around here most places work too cheap and make it up on parts.

These trucks 87-96 were the glory years for the trucks the speed density EFI 300/302/351W/460 though primitive was simple to fix and parts were cheap. If you had a multi meter and basic hand tools and a haynes/chiltons manual you could diagnose a lot of common issues. Pretty appalling when a shop has to resort to swapping parts to find an issue and threw in the towel for a BASIC repair. Just because it didn't have an OBD2 port and it was an older vehicle. I'll never get rid of my 1990 any time soon. I have to say lots of aftermarket electronics and sensors lately are just plain junk out of the box so I try to stick to OE parts like sensors, fuel pumps, tfi modules, PIP sensors etc. but again dead simple, yeah it's not a modern system for EFI but if you understand the basics and can read and use a multi meter, your save yourself a shit ton of cash.

That Ford IAC system is so goofy. If I remember right the throttle stop screw isn't even supposed to adjust the idle, it just makes it so the throttle blades don't stick closed. The hole in the throttle plate actually sets the idle. Ford sold bushing kits to change the size of the holes to fine tune the idle. The IAC is just there to raise the idle if you have a load like air conditioning or power steering at idle. 🤷
@marknaravas318
@marknaravas318 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The set screw that everyone dicked with was the “hard stop” to keep the plates from sticking. The hole was a calibrated size for air bypass. A quick trick to set base idle was to disconnect the IAC and the engine should just barely idle. With the IAC plugged in, it should run between 25-40% at idle, depending on load. If it’s really low, that’s usually a sign of an Intake leak.

Ya, nice looking truck with the red/black combination. Just keep the tp sensor voltage below 1.0 volt. 1.0 and higher will turn on the evap purge. Changing older tp sensors with new OEM sensor helped to make a more crisp throttle response. Kind of like changing the accelerator pump plunger assembly on a carburetor.

Great review Ivan. Keep the old ones alive ! OBD1 vehicles also don't have issues like the new vehicles do. Recently had an '89 GMC V1500 Suburban with high idle issues when cold to warm, idle wouldn't reduce fully on its own. Once at operating temperature, the only way to get the idle down was to put it in drive with the brake on and within 20 seconds the idle would slowly come down to spec. Plugged in the Snap-on brick and of course, little help from that. Had to revert to prior to OBD1 methods or fire the parts canon. No vacuum leaks so it had to be a sensor related issue. The Vehicle had a Standard Motor Products IAC installed so that was a suspect. Ended up replacing the IAC with an ACDelco IAC, not easy to find by the way, and now the idle curves work normal from cold to operating temperature. During our diag, we measured the TPS and it was within range but my mechanic friend wanted to lower the idle number to .07 from 1.0 which was within spec range as it was. Idle is now super smooth. IAC's apparently have to be dead on perfect and from our experience, you need the factory part vs. aftermarket regardless of their reputation. My guess is when the Delco brand is not available your best options are to use Delphi or Borg Warner since they used to or still do make GM parts.

I started working on cars in the 60s, Tune ups with points and condensers, specific tools for specific carburetors. It was pretty cool to see the technology change all the way up to todays computer engine management. I stayed up to date and found it really isn't that hard to properly diagnose a problem the first time. I have been retired 6 years and enjoy watching these diagnostic videos. What impresses me the most is the HP they can get out of small engines. 6500 rpm redlines on most cars is pretty impressive considering anything over 5000 rpm was pushing it back in the old days.

The aftermarket TPS sensors for old Fords like this one are GARBAGE! If the vehicle starts n' stalls, randomly stalls when the throttle is released, or falls on it's face when you get on it, a junk China TPS should be your #1 suspect. An old analog multimeter makes short work of diagnosing them.

Good job! Nice to see a vintage vehicle that is well maintained still on the road. I bet a vehicle like that is a rarity in your area.

I worked on a 89 f150 with a 302 that was a crank no start and when I unplugged tps the engine started and ran good so I left it unplugged and never replaced it because the guy that owned it used it to haul garbage in the campground he owned and it never seen the road. I couldn't believe how well the truck ran without the tps unplugged but transmission shifted ok and he never had a problem with the truck for the 10 years he owned it.

My favorite 80's and 90's rwd volvos just had a clicky microswitch as the tps... It clicked on by a closed throttle and idle control was activated. 0 fuel responsibility. The slightly more advanced systems like this one use voltage to activate idle, i can't imagine it's too responsible for fueling, probably tip in enrichment and that's about it.

What is not commonly known about EEC IV is that when the key is turned on and in the instant befor cranking, it takes a snapshot of throttle position and assumes that as closed throttkev(TPCT). If the throttle body doesn’t agree with TPCT, the IAC goes nuts. Another thing not commonly know is that EEC looks at the resistance on the wiper circuit, not the voltage. That voltage is an interpretation of the resistance for us stupid humans.

It's the other way around, the ECM is only measuring the voltage on the wiper using an analog to digital converter. The voltage dropped by the voltage divider depends on the wiper position which makes up the two resistances on either side. There is no way to measure resistance directly, the multimeter too only measures voltage, resistance is just a mathematical derivation by us humans...

@@jovangrbic97 but resistance is inferred by the voltage. A beautiful problem for those old fords is to get a TP sensor from a cheap source and (if it works at all) will start off with a TPCT of over a voltage. That really messes with ECC
