As for the covering of logos, there is a sad trend in the US of them ceasing packages with logos as "counterfeit". Apple really loves to enforce this on Apple branded refurbished screens, calling them imported fake parts because they didn't authorize the importing of it, even if they were the original manufacturer, they just went to China to be fixed for whatever reason. So that is why stuff going to the US has logos covered to get through customs.
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
oh!! that's very interesting. do you have any references about that? I'd like to read more about it... thanks for sharing!

Louis Rossmann touches in this in a video titled: "Apple & Customs STOLE my batteries, that they won't even provide to AASPs." is the title of the video. Since YT hates links, at least giving the title should make it hit when you search for it at the very least, and you can read the US Customs letter. I have also seen this with Airsoft guns, where in the rest of the world, they can bear the Colt logo, but they are either removed, painted over or covered to enter the US due to this customs policy.
@CharliePearce Жыл бұрын
@@ArtofServer I can attest to this in the clothing industry. Fake clothing is often seized based on trademark infringement of the manufacturer's logo, as that is really the only "protected" element of the item. Not just in the US, most countries have trademark enforcement treaties of some kind.

Inspur cards aren't "fake" as such. They're using a licensed design, genuine LSI chips and are pretty well built (heatsinking is for server use, as you point out) P20 firmware might have been the issue. It's notorious for problems with SATA drives and the general recommendation is to downgrade to P19
@ArtofServer4 ай бұрын
no one said anything about "fake". this was just taking a look at a card I received as a return fraud.
@miscbits63994 ай бұрын
@@ArtofServer They're widely described as such by people who don't understand how OEM licensing works. I agree it's return fraud in your case but the likely reason you got it was that the client regarded it as "fake" from a "returns not accepted" vendor (common for Chinese sellers) FWIW the Inspur cards _are_ cheap(*), but to be honest I'd avoid sas2008/3008 family for home use anyway The reason for saying that is they can't be turned to low power PCIe mode(**) and prevent the host computer from reaching sleep/low power modes This is especially germane if you want a silent PC - the ARM-based LSI controllers (9400 onwards) not only draw much less power than the PowerPC ones, but allow the host system to go to C6 modes too, so whilst there may be an "on paper" variation of 10W between the cards you can easily see 60-80W on the whole system In your position I'd sell the card cheaply with a 30 day warranty. There's always someone who will buy it as long as it's tested (*) Usually, but there are some chinese vendors who take the proverbial (**) sas3008 cards can have L0/L1 enabled but at cost of lots of random SMART errors and it's a serious faff to set the modes

New to your channel and this came as a recommended video, so I watched it. I hope you were able to dispute the theft and keep the money from the sale. As far as the tape over the logos... Louis Rossman touched on this years ago in several videos. The tape is there to cover the log and help slip past customs. Apple, in the context of his video, claimes all parts with their logo are clones, even if those parts are proven to be removed from trash and sold as used. Part of the anti-right to repair tactic, if you can't get parts, you'll buy new.

I wouldn't say bricked, which usually implies that some firmware is broken or corrupted. That sounds more like the card has failed in some way if host booting doesn't work. For example, if your SAS2008 chip has failed, and you try to boot the firmware it will fail like that.

Regarding Supermicro cards, what do you think of the AOC-SASLP-MV8? I have two that've been running like champs going on a decade now. My only concern is that they get FIERY HOT. They also require a beta Windows driver that was never officially released to support drives over 4 TB. I tried posting the Supermicro link, but KZbin auto-deleted my comment.
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
I don't have a lot of experience with those cards. They are not based on LSI controller chipsets, but rather a Marvell 6480 chipset. It's also very old, being a SAS-1 controller, and PCIe x4 only. If they are still working for you, then that's fine. But if you ever need to replace them, I think I would get something a little more modern.
@fredleggett923 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtofServer There is a newer version of the card (the SASLP2), but it's probably old hat by now, too. TBH, I'm at a real crossroads and I don't know which fork to take. I have an old (back then it was brand new) Norco box that I modified to accept a large Corsair AIO. It worked out really well in the beginning, but I've lost at least six high-capacity drives in the last 6-8 months that have, according to SMART data, cooked themselves. I now highly suspect that my modifications made the Norco into a slow-bake oven and I'm going to have to get rid of it, especially since chia has permanently spiked drive prices into the stratosphere. Problem is whatever I get as a replacement will be directly attached to my TV in my living room as a media box, so noise is a critical factor. I can't have a system running Tinnitus-inducing Delta fans, as I already have a case of constant ear ringing and don't need an exacerbating factor. And all of the server-type chassis I've examined via Google images look to REQUIRE Delta or Delta-like fans since they force drives to sit in a tight metal cage with almost no air gaps for heat dissipation. As such, I'm seriously thinking of just getting a standard mid-tower PC case with an external drive bay solution, like the 10-bay Sabrent docking station (DS-UCTB [again, I'd post the link, but KZbin would just delete my entire comment]), and completely ditch the idea of thinking I can run enterprise-grade hardware, especially on their own rightful and justifiable terms. I know various outlets have really, REALLY nice Supermicro chassis on offer, like the 846, but its placement in my living room is non-negotiable. So, uh, any advice?

This includes Fujitsu, Supermicro, and Dell. HP/IBM/Lenovo seems to just use the LSI reference design and put a sticker on them. I think as long as you are cooling this card with enough airflow, it should work fine.

i get it stay away from from fake cards but do fake cards actually work and if so how long are they reliable?
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
Not sure why you are asking this question under this video? This video was NOT about counterfeit or fake HBA cards. That said, in my experience, the counterfeit cards usually are lacking in quality, such as smaller heatsinks, cheaper conductive materials, etc. And that's only what is visible, so who knows what other components they used sub-standard quality parts on that are not easily visually identifiable? Do they work? Yes, they usually do initially, although often flashed with incorrect firmware and using incorrect PCIe IDs, so they sort of work. But my biggest concern is probably their reliability and longevity, considering the cheaper components used. But since I don't use them, I don't have any data to share. The card is this video is not a counterfeit or fake card, it was just an Inspur card that I was not too familiar with.

My first purchase with Art of Server was a return. I bought the wrong card. It was totally me and 100% my fault. He was awesome with the return/exchange process. I'm sure I'm not the only idiot who has accidentally purchased the wrong card lol... Being able to return/exchange saved me ~$75...
@jonathanbuzzard1376 Жыл бұрын
@@ednastone8941 If you say no return then you can refuse the return and that's that as far as eBay is concerned. I have a large supply of 4TB SAS drives I am selling and I have to refuse returns because once shipped I can't vouch for it's integrity. I off a 90 warranty but you have to record serial numbers, and the warranty is a replacement drive *NEVER* a refund.
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
I appreciate that suggestion, however eBay will always side with the buyer. doesn't matter if I say "no returns accepted" or not. they can just open a return and say product was defective. ebay provides no option to the seller but to refund the buyer and i have to eat the loss. :-( I've argued with eBay that this policy just encourages bad behavior, but they don't want to deal with these things case by case - probably not enough people to handle these situations case by case. so instead, they have a policy that is automated that works for some "majority" of cases and not for many others. but like I said, for me at least, these situations are rare and it's happened before and it will happen again. I'm grateful for all the awesome people who support my store.

Didn't you take photos of item sold and recorded certain serial number or markings of the card? Next time, make a statement in the item description. Please don't assume ALL THE BYERS ARE THE SAME. Sorry about your bad experience. Hoped that you did not make refund to that buyer.
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter really. eBay policy is to refund the customer no matter what, as long as the tracking shows the return was delivered. thanks for watching!

I don't know why they cover the logos unless there is some law in China that forbids photos of logos and trademarks. Why else would they do it? I never have been to China. I will also never go there ever! They have some really draconian laws and may arrest anyone in the world who broke them if they ever set foot in China even on a connecting flight! It is not good! No it is not good at all!!

ahhahah make a "packaging video" and draw on it a difficult-to-replicate doodle/singature-like drawing on its package. Requrest returns to be granded with the recipient's unboxing/packaging video. This was my thought when I was thinking of starting a selling business, because shit happens. Perhaps we could borrow better ideas from various security protocols. :D Any scammer deserves to burn in hell.

Looks like someone needed a controller, ordered from you and another seller but could get a larger refund by scamming you. Very uncool. I think that having a dated image of the item on the listing would go a long way toward dissuading buyers of this sort of activity.
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think so. Also, I know many Chinese sellers, even if shipped from a US warehouse, insist on returns being sent back to China. Making it difficult and expensive to return, and probably as a tactic to discourage returns. The problem in this case is that eBay always favors the buyer. So, as a seller in this situation, i have no choice but to refund the buyer no matter how obvious the evidence support the fraudulent activity.

It may not be a scam. Time and energy spend for a very specific product, the gain etc. It's probably a mistake, they sent the wrong card. But, on the other hand, you are a more experienced seller on ebay, you've probably checked the buyer. Well... that makes this video a click bait, which is kind of scam, isn't it???

consolation prize: breakout cables 🏆 ebay should have some system to track and combat bad actors like this especially with the fees they charge. I was actually wondering why you dont have an online store through squarespace or some other independent service. im familiar with ebay scalping fees uhhh i mean transaction fees. they take a lot for not much at this time. i found your store through your vids. i can understand if ebay still was a 800 pound gorilla 🦍 in marketing. If you listed ebay store link and also a competing link to web portal shop i would choose the private web shop so eBay doesn't take $$$ for nothing.
@ArtofServer Жыл бұрын
yeah, breakout cables and a SAS2308 card I've never handled before! LOL I've considered maybe doing a shopify store or running my own e-commerce site. I've helped other businesses set up things like that in my consulting business. However, eBay was just easy to get started and low maintenance. It has it's drawbacks for sure, and not just about fees, but it was the least friction way to get started. I drive most of my own traffic to my eBay store from KZbin anyway, so I think I can redirect my supporters to a new site if I choose to do that. thanks for watching!
