Perhaps a scam if I hadn't paid (impossible on eBay). Or if I faked a fault with this machine (I didn't, you've seen the video). I never even demanded a refund. You are clearly mistaken then, aren't you.

I don't know if he was being kind or if he just did not want me to return the machine, which I definitely would have done because I believed it was faulty.

Hope you sent him the money (or some of it) back. I would have returned at least 75% to him for his honesty. After all it was your tapes that were the problem.

@@brit-in-czech The reason is not tape recorder but fact that this type Philips is not forgiving sticky tape. Sticky tape wasn't even known when Philips produced it. I did exactly the same - having Tesla B116 I decided to go for more sophisticated Philips N4506 of the same technology While my scotch tapes with some additional friction were with exceptions accepted by Tesla they wont rewind to the end because of sophiosticated control of torques in Philips motors. There are small power motors. I ended up with vertical Uher which up to my knowledge has best mechanical transport and also returned to Tesla which I accurately aligned and only requiires to use in horizontal position,. Philips was looking impressive but also I didnt like the access to heads i just gave it away as gift. In fact sound quality of B116, handiness and it's ease to service puts it for me at first place
