played against Cliffie in 92. Hamiltons against Villagers. Went for a run, at hooker, around the back of the lineout... Biggest hit I ever got was from Cliffie.. Ran straight at him. It was his timing that I remember... Threw himself at my chest area at the ball, thundered. I remember seeing both my boots in the air. Winded and hurt, but carried on.... Will go down as my top 3 biggest hits ever received. A very hard man.

In the mid 70’s my parents managed the Vasco Hotel in Parow, the times when you still had a public bar where woman were not allowed. They must have been there for a few weeks when a fight broke out and the Etzebeth’s were involved. My mom, a small woman but with no fear at all grabbed a guitar and hit one of the guys over the head with it, the guys was Skattie. He was so shocked that a woman had the guts to hit him that at that moment they stopped fighting and a lifelong friendship developed. After that when a fight broke out my mom would just shout Skattie and the fight would be sorted out. Back in those days fights were a common occurrence.

Botha was a slightly inferior athlete to Eben, but a significantly more willing enforcer. Etzebeth does a lot of collar grabbing and shouting but doesn’t actually do a lot of fighting. Botha could start a fight in a phone booth (assuming he could fit into one).
