I was at the ground as a Sharks fan. Biggest hit I've ever seen, and on a guy who is also ridiculously powerful. Poor Bismarck didn't know where he was. Tried to get up, stumbled back down. He was so disoriented he started walking back towards his own tryline.

Bakkies was probably slightly more feared, but Etzebeth is leaps and bounds the better rugby player. Bosses both defensive and offensive line outs, faster, more athletic and a gas tank for days. Ever since he found that line between aggression and discipline, he’s been rugby’s best lock for a couple of years now, and consistently one of the best players period.

I rate the main reason why Bakkies was more feared was that the game was not as strict back then. If you do anything now that is just marginally more than grabbing a jersey, you'll get sidelined for weeks. Opposition knows that Eben will exercise restraint to avoid getting a card, so less reason to fear.

Over the years there were many brutal enforcers and believe you me, before rugby became professional the game was way dirtier. The difference between Bakkies Botha and Etzebeth is...Bakkies used to beat the living snot out of his opponents. On the other hand I've never seen Etzebeth throw a punch. He will shake a person that his teeth rattle but not punch them. I think part of the reason is that he is one of the highest paid rugby in the world right now and he doesn't want to get red carded.
