There's purported footage of his party taking off from that site into seemingly clear weather. Search teams were inhibited from finding the "landing" site by fog and darkness. When they did find the crash site he was reported as "missing" for a while, now it is confirmed he is dead. The word "killed" isn't nuanced here. Grammatically people can be "killed" by accidents, crashes, etc. without sinister implication.

It's not a hard landing that was Iran downplaying the accident. Look at the first drone images. All you could identify was the tail section. The main fuselage is completely burnt and gone. This is more like crash landing. This accident reminds me of the death of former CM of Andhra Pradesh YS Rajashekhar. Very similar weather lot of fog, and his chopper also crashed, leading to his demise. I just feel that in such weather, especially helicopters, shouldn't even operate.
