I am glad to find this sermon. This morning I read the Ecclesiastes 1, saddened because I couldn't understand it very much. Depressing to know that I lack knowledge but then, I am grateful to watch this, I was reminded that God is the one who truly gives meaning of Life and everything.

My pastor suggested we read Ecclesiastes and I opened my Bible but to be honest it got me feeling depressed and scared. Almost like hopeless, I couldn’t understand. I’m glad for this reminder, God gives my life meaning. Forgive me God if I let materialistic things be the center of my life. I surrender everything to You. Jesus I ask for You to come into my life because I know I can’t do anything without You. Be my Strength and Courage in Jesus Mighty Name. Forgive me for my Anger in Jesus Name. Amen.

I’ve never been more excited about the word of God this much ever since I was born again. This book Ecclesiastes is worth sharing to all creation who boast about life here on earth, but to us who are born again life is meaningful for we are sojourners here temporarily and our home is in eternity with Jesus Christ.

I am watching this in 2024. When pastor David said that technology numbs us and gives the illusion of newness he couldn’t have been more correct. Amazing amazing sermon. I was reading Ecclesiastes and was so confused because when I read it, it sounded like Debby downer but this sermon helped me understand Ecclesiastes better. Thank you🎉

So glad to have found this. The book of Ecclesiastes is one of my favorite books in the bible. It is a beautiful work which speaks of spiritual truth that is fitly woven into the life of the indvidual whose main connection in life is God overall. Proving that all is vanity but God and our connection to Him.

I now see the book of Ecclesiastes as one if the most important apart from Jesus words. All is vanity except for what you do for the kingdom. Eternal souls are the key to life. Seeing past the outside of people and looking at them as what they truly are, living souls that God created for a reason. Amen

As I get older, I can relate to the seemingly meaninglessness of life. But I know The Lord has a reason for allowing cicumstances, and He has a great plan unfolding even if I do not see it. I studied this book as a teenager verse by verse and have not studied it since.

David, I like that you say that the book of Ecclesiastes is an unusual and difficult book to understand in the Bible, as this book is great to meditate on for profound wisdom. Also, David, while I appreciate the research that you do with the Bible, and I do find that quite helpful in my own faith walk with God (Micah 6:8), I disagree with your comment that King Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes as someone, like you said, "who thinks and lives as if God does not matter." The Bible does not say that if you do the research into the Scriptures. The Bible says that King Solomon was not as faithful at the end of his life as King David was, as the Bible says, "..his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God" (1 Kings 11:4) as Solomon never fully forsook the LORD his God, but served the LORD with idolatrous practices also; however, what happened to King Solomon was exactly as God warned in the Law of Moses (Deuteronomy 17:17) in that his heart was led astray by the forbidden foreign women that he married (1 Kings 11:1-5). In fact, God was pleased to bless King Solomon with 140 wives as the maximum to reach his "perfect" wife as blessed by God (Song of Songs 6:9), as God blessed King Solomon with "[s]ixty queens there may be, and eighty concubines" (Song of Songs 6:8), and King Solomon went far beyond what God blessed him with, as King Solomon went all the way to "...seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been." -- (1 Kings 11:3-4). As a consequence, Solomon explains the bitterness of breaking God's command in writing, "I find more bitter than death the woman who is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare." -- (Ecclesiastes 7:29). God warned his people Israel of that consequence in the Law of Moses, when the Bible says, "...do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you." -- (Deuteronomy 7:16). Also, God faithfully gave King Solomon more wisdom than any other human king (1 Kings 3:9-12), in which Solomon really helps his people with what to focus on in life to enjoy, as he wrote, "I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives." -- (Ecclesiastes 2:3). The following Scripture passages from King Solomon fulfill the task for his people in focusing on the good aspects of life to enjoy: Ecclesiastes 2:13; Ecclesiastes 2:24-26; Ecclesiastes 3:11-13; Ecclesiastes 3:22; Ecclesiastes 5:18-20; Ecclesiastes 8:15; Ecclesiastes 9:7-10; Ecclesiastes 11:9; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. Finally, "Meaningless! Meaningless!" certainly is a provocative way to begin this book, but since when does life carry meaning that anyone truly understands easily, as King Solomon elaborates, "...then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it." (Ecclesiastes 7:17). While life itself might be difficult to define and the mundane everyday tasks might be difficult in which to find any meaning as they repeat over and over typically (Ecclesiastes 1:9), we can be greatly encouraged that God wants us to rejoice in life and to really enjoy life, even if we do not understand how to give life definitions that have meaning, as Jesus said that "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:10).

Solomon even as King understood life under the Sun is empty without God 1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Everything Is Meaningless 1The words of the Teacher, a son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? Improved quality of life and increased life expectancy who needs that ? Why would i want to enjoy 21st century dental care ? Why would i want to have tasty food from around the globe instead of just wheat & rice ? Who needs potato french fries with tomato sauce ? Will musical instruments in 3000 years time really be able to produce any more amazing tunes than a three stringed lute ? Will it really make my life more interesting to see all the things round this planet rather than just the few miles i can walk to ? Who cares if we understand how the wind flows so well that we can predict its speed and direction several days in advance ? Will there really be any meaningful improvement in science and technology ? What does it matter if we knew that it is the Earth which is rotating causing apparent sunrise and set rather than the sun moving ? So what if infant mortality can be greatly reduced just be improved sanitation, discovering how to make clean water. Why would i want to ride a fast racer bike along a smooth tar road or go kite surfing in amazing waves ? What could be better than watching the goats grazing the bushes and listening to the cricket chirp ?

In order to have all the experiences the human mind wants to experience death is mandatory. It is impossible to live forever + experience everything. Sometimes we feel inadequate in our place and seek more than everything already given to us. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet; all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Oh Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth” - Psalms 8

Some of what he is saying he has no idea. Solomon is not saying that God does not matter. Solomon is pretty much saying people wake up. You need to come to see God is reality. You need to come to Christ as reality in your living. Don’t live in the vanity of this world. Jesus says I am the way the truth and reality
