Id just like to say, I beat this level this very morning, my delight in beating the damn thing is somewhat tempered by the pain in my wrists and fingers, but damn do i love this game and its soundtrack, does anybody else just pause the game and listen to a few loops of the Tube, or the Icecap theme?

It was more or less my favorite track from the original Ecco, which I beat at the age of 12. I was forever changed by the experience, both in a good and bad way - although my innocence was somewhat tempered by the ordeal of having attempted the level so many times, I also found myself steeled in my attitude toward life in general by the knowledge that I alone, out of all my friends, had beaten the single-hardest level that I'd ever seen in a computer game up to that point. ...And then I played _Ecco: Tides of Time_... yeah, I was a very different kid after that.

I remember, distinctly, one day at night, I was playing Ecco on my Sega Genesis, no older than 5 at the time. Totally alone. I was at the password screen, and decided to type in all Z's. I had tried to put all sorts of random letters together and always got nothing. This time, to my shock, "Welcome To The Machine" flashed on the screen......what?..........and......the horror........the sheer alarming nature of that level, and that............song..............it has to be the most haunting melody that I know. Terrifying, what had ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THIS DOLPHIN SWIMMING AROUND IN THE OCEAN!? Weird.

Fuck that level. Seriously. I cracked the case of my controller because of this part. Game was hard enough without intentionally malicious auto-scrolling bullshit. Once I finally got through to the queen, I got sucked in before I figured her pattern. Seeing "Welcome to the Machine" almost made me have a friggin stroke.

Input consistent common letters like AAAAAAA, BBBBB, etc up to the Ns and this shows up. Scary shit. Such a big change in tone and settings from the rest of the game makes it completely unexpected.

The hardest level in existence. It takes me 5 hours and heaven knows how many continues to beat "Welcome to the machine", then I die at the boss and I have to start welcome to the machine ALL OVER AGAIN??? Who designed that thinking it would be fun????
