Above everything else, Mahmoud's legacy is his one-man-revolution of making his trade a respectable one. There were no artists/vocalists/musicians before Mahmoud, they were called 'azmarie' and looked down upon all over Ethiopia. But when you own your own nice house, a nice car, a band, all the proceeds of your work, your music stores in two different cities and hire people to work for you like Mahmoud did back in the 70s, the poverty stricken backward society had no choice but change its attitude towards you and your peers.
