@@TheAnonyy Before their drummer joined them (the superlative Pete de Freitas, RIP), they had a drum machine they called Echo. And The Bunnymen probably just a play on bunny girls. But I'm not sure band names need to mean anything? Ian MacCulloch started out in another band that splintered variously into Teardrop Explodes, and Wah! Heat! (which morphed into just Wah! and later still The Mighty Wah!). Didn't stop TE or the last 2 Wah! iterations shifting a fair few records.

#lyrics Who's on the seventh floor Brewing alternatives What's in the bottom drawer Waiting for things to give Spare us the cutter Spare us the cutter Couldn't cut the mustard Conquering myself Until I see another hurdle approaching Say we can, say we will Not just another drop in the ocean Come to the free for all With seven tapered knives Some of them six feet tall We will escape our lives Spare us the cutter Spare us the cutter Couldn't cut the mustard Conquering myself Until I see another hurdle approaching Say we can, say we will Not just another drop in the ocean Am I the happy loss Will I still recoil When the skin is lost Am I the worthy cross Will I still be soiled When the dirt is off Conquering myself

NöE reminds me of when I had a bizarre mystical experience.. really thought I died of a heart attack from the weight of what felt like 10 elephants sitting on my chest after hearing my heart beating faster than the mother of all panic attacks and I blacked out. ... positive that I died of a heart attack when I awoke in a semi dark room I could literally see through my eyelids.. ... I kept testing it opening and closing my eyes ... ...took me a couple years before I found out what that was all about and found out it happened to other people..THE GREAT DOUBT as its known in Zen. I also looked down and saw all these weird tiny little suds all around my body and the edges of my body was dissolving.. ... someone later told me that is when you dissolve the pain body and you therefore get quicker results when you meditate... it's as if the pain and the muck come off faster. .. it's technically a reference in one of its many forms to what is spoken about in The Book of Revelations... the reveal: ... its when the mask ...the skin comes off and what is presented is you are a more true authentic self who doesn't want to play games anymore ..who doesn't want to be an arsehole... ..who's looking for something more genuine and real.. ... for some of us it's a real painful process going into the void or as they call it in Buddhism also the Sunyata. then I saw the diamonds in the sky : a deep Vivid royal blue color sky and what stretched-out overhead into Infinity that look like Tire Treads made out of an amount of diamonds Beyond any number... ... so beautiful it was beyond description and I knew that the only thing that really exists is love. .. took me years of reading to learn what that was... ... and found out that is supposedly when you go up through your crown chakra and you're seeing the edges of the petals. .. all I can tell you is for me it was very painful when I went in to the void shortly thereafter ... ...for most of us it is it is also called The Dark Night of the Soul and an original Pali Canon Buddhism is called the Dukkha Nana's.. ... some people only go through it for a few hours or days.. some for months... some sorry sojourners like myself have gone through it off and on for years... I myself for over 7 years.. btw.. some stay in it for a whole lifetime or lifetimes and if you try to escape it's Horrors by medicating or boozing it up you only are delaying for when you still will have to do your time in that hell. I think the worse it is it first has to do with Bad Karma and I must have had a lot of Bad Karma to work off.. ... I just came out of it about 2 weeks ago and I'm hoping I never have to go back in it again... ... they claim it is when your third eye is opening . ...The Dark Night of the soul the real Dark Night of the Soul where the dukkha nanas is is marked by three negative things: Fear, misery, and disgust... ...you will have fear.. all your worst fears just keep coming up as like the fear of all fears.. you feel like you're in a nightmare World.. .. things seem very dark like you're really in a hole... .... then misery is that suddenly you cannot seem to enjoy anything you enjoyed before for example if you love a hot cup of tea it suddenly taste like tobacco... .... everything becomes a source of pain painful memories painful remorse painful regrets the pain of missing loved ones who have moved on... ... everything just becomes pain. ... then there is disgust ... ...disgust with everything in the physical world: there's no desire to eat.. I became emaciated .. ...there is no desire to get out of bed ..there is no desire to be.. ... and then after all that there is the desire to be liberated from it where you call out for help and what happened to me is each time I asked Jesus to get me out of this hell that usually would take at least several days of really praying hard and even yelling and getting mad and saying don't you hear me ? ... don't you have any faith in me ? where are you ? ...and then it's like getting a get out of jail card where you're sprung.. ... .. that usually take several days for it to totally put you back in a normal life or sometimes things are better than they ever were. ... I think what I have learned and read in all the research is that you don't stay out of the Void the dark hole the abyss forever if you don't have compassion or if you don't have humility... ... on KZbin there is a man named Shinzen Young who claims to be able to help people navigate out of that Matrix... one thing that helped a lot was looking at KZbin .. the videos on the third chakra and how to release fear ... ...this last time was the worst.. it was so gripping I was walking hunched over and I was in physical pain after doing one of the breathing exercises to release fear... ..But it worked. ... even though I'm out of it now I'm still going to partake of his podcast that he does on Fridays and weekends... .. he offers discounts to those who are struggling financially ..you can go to his website and you can look at his videos where he talks about depersonalization.. one of the best ways to get help with all this stuff if you are experiencing weird metaphysical things is to get help from a Buddhist llama or maybe a zen teacher the Tibetan Buddhist Lamas being shamanistic probably are actually more adept at dealing with this .. hopefully I've learned my lesson now but these lyrics spare us the cutter all remind me of when you're in the abyss and you know what they say sometimes when you look into the abyss the abyss stares back at you. .. that is what happens when you go into the void and you think you have compassion but you don't have enough of it but at least you have shed the skin... .. and I tell people I don't care what religion you are .. ..it doesn't even matter if you don't believe in God ... ..all I know is to go to guy is the dude named Jesus.. ... he is the one whose special talent is to get you out of hell but sometimes we have to get really angry and yell at him to convince him to spare us the cutter

WOW!!! I was a 14 year old kid in Jr. High School in 1987 listening to KROQ when the radio commercial would advertise the concert for Echo & The Bunnymen & it was the Swedish Eagle (Egil) who advertised it. The radio commercial would start the first 5 seconds with the beginning of this song. Then the Swedish Eagle's voice would come over the song after the 5 seconds promoting the concert. This band, the beginning of this song, the Swedish Eagle, and the radio ad for the concert have always been synonymous to me whenever I hear this song or the name of the band. This occurs rarely about many years in between. It brought a smile to my face.

This track helps define the early to mid-80s indie scene in the UK. It's full of all that Marxist symbolism beloved of the left at the time. It's fabulously full of its own aching self-importance and totally bereft of any fun. But despite all that, it captures a mood - it's pensive, cool, political and head-noddingly addictive. McCullogh's baritone warbles over a nicely orchestrated ensemble to great effect.

Apparently, every single band/song of the 80s that I and my friends loved/bought/went to see are 'underrated', because commenters have said so on every KZbin vid of them I've watched.
