ECHO RB-60 Spreader | Clothes Hanger Modification Fix
In this video I discuss a modification and fix to the ECHO RB-60 Broadcast Spreader using a simple metal clothes hanger. The ECHO RB-60 broadcast spreader is a very well built and durable unit, but suffers from a overlooked design flaw that can cause the material discharge chute to stay stuck in the open position continuously spilling fertilizer on a lawn even after the discharge control handle is released. This simple clothes hanger fix creates an emergency material discharge stop as a backup when things don't work as they should.

@@LawnCareBusinessSuccess hi how much you charge for blowing up only for commercial office parking and how much you charge for cutting bushes ( like fix little trees and flowers)? please

Nice video! Thanks for the suggestion. I love my RB-60, it's definitely the best of the cheap spreaders with its good hopper capacity, rugged body/wheels, and it actually spreads evenly unlike the Scotts junk. It's been 3 years and I finally had the jamming issue with the discharge chute mentioned at the beginning of the video. I'm disappointed in the obvious design flaw. I made the hanger modification referenced in the video and it works great! The discharge chute seems to be opening and closing more freely after a nice cleaning too.

I would agree that for commercial use this spreader would be a deal breaker. Considering the typical homeowner doesn't throw down nearly as often and would be able to hose down after every use, it seems this is an ideal spreader for the price. It seems every spreader out there has their own finicky issues that we as users have to engineer work arounds for, this one is no exception except being a fraction of the price as many of the commercial spreaders.

yup…happened the first time I used it with pelletized lime and a couple times when I switched to fert after that (I could bounce the handle open/closed and get it to close with the fert. This mod is a must have on this unit and like you said…you have to hose it out good and run water through it opening and closing it a few times to keep it clean between the discs….they need to swap it to a solid rod actuator or just redesign that disc setup to something more reliable. Other than that and it needing steeper smoother sides at the bottom so it gravity feeds better from half empty on better without having to bounce it repeatedly. It’s almost a great spreader…the wheels are nice and it throws great for large areas anyway-lol

Yeah unfortunately after this video both the cable then the agitator broke. The frame, wheels and hopper seem good. It’s too bad the rest of it is junk. Thanks for watching.

Hi, thanks for all the detail on this item. Can you recommend a brand for $150 that does not jam up between these two plates? I have sworn off Scotts, I had bad experience with their drop spreader and swore I would never buy another Scotts. Drop spreaders require too much walking so I want a good broadcast spreader. Thanks!

I’m not sure of one that would fit that budget off hand. I’ve been using the Spyker brand specifically the ERGO Pro model. They are true commercial units but also cost hundreds of dollars. I know they make a less expensive version called the ergo. I would look into the spyker brand. My first spreader was a spyker non pro model that I used for 10 years commercially. Thanks for watching.

Yes, I was watching a video on a Spyker 25 lb bag spreader that you carry. I think it is only $70 or so!

It’s possible. I thought of that as well but decided I wanted the pull wire instead. That way I’m always in control of closing it if it gets stuck. I burnt a lawn last year when the chute would not close so I wanted to make sure I could manually close it quickly. Thanks for watching.

I've had problems with the agitator. Once I get near the end of the fertilizer, I've noticed the agitator does a poor job directing the remaining fertilizer to the holes. I've seen a few mods, but they seem to fail rather quickly. Thoughts?

No unfortunately it’s junk. The best mod I made was getting rid of it and replacing with something better. I went with the Spyker Ergo Pro 50 model. Been a few years and no issues with the Spyker yet. Thanks for watching.

I wonder if you could clean it everyday? know you're running business and it's probably hard for you to that but I bet it would help tremendously. Have you ever hosed it down before?. One time I left fertilizer in a scott spreader that I had before the rb 60 and it made the plastic gates instead of slick it made it like sandpaper/porous feeling. Almost like it burned the plastic the fertilizer did. .
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess

Yes I’ve hosed it down completely a few times now. To their credit this unit is not classified for commercial use. So doing your own lawn it’s no problem. Use it and hose it down. But doing more than a couple properties in a day and it starts to act up. Can’t hose it off in between houses as it would waste a lot of time and not dry quickly enough for the next property. With this modification I was able to use it all week on all my client properties without cleaning. Thanks for watching.

On my old Scot't Spreader I left some fertilizer in it for too long and it kind of burnt the plastic doors down at the bottom. Make sure that the plastic doors is still smooth and not gritty like sand paper. Hope that makes sense

I don’t know. Overall it’s a really well built spreader. Takes a lot of abuse compared to others I’ve used. Nothing coming loose or getting wonky. Just that issue I noticed with the chute getting stuck open. It worked fine for the first few months so maybe just cleaning it regularly may prevent the problem. Thanks for watching.

I never even got past the calibration setup on a concrete driveway. Spreader has never been in the feild. Mowers direct will not take it back. And echo is completely no help. I informed both companies that there is a design flaw in the product and they do not care. I've seen where several people have had the same issue across multiple reviews. Mine has been hanging in the garage for a year with only 15 minutes of use on my concrete drive while trying to calibrate for 0-46-0. Would spread perfect on first pass. Go to close the shoot and turn to make my next pass going back up drive and would see a significant reduction in the fertilizer coming out due to prills jamming under plates. Impossible to get an accurate application. JUNK!

Unfortunately this spreader is the worst I’ve ever used in the 17 years I’ve had a lawn care business. After this video it continued to fall apart with both the cable and the spinning agitator breaking. This spreader did not even last a full season. I would not even recommend this spreader to a home owner. Thanks for watching.
