A walk full of the atmosphere of the past - which as you say, is probably better captured at night, when the 'present' has faded back into the shadows. Very enjoyable. Keep them coming! Thank you!

Never clicked on a video faster! Been looking forward to this, the first episode was brilliant. I was just visiting Hampton Court Palace yesterday, and I also walked from Vauxhall to King's Cross. Passed many a street and building that I've seen in your videos, John :)!

Very fitting :)! And another cracking video, very atmospheric. Yes to the series idea and many more discoveries! I'm Belgian but I pop over to London a few times a year, to visit museums and to walk and wander just like you do. I find London so very peaceful, wonderful for 'headspace' (as soon as you walk away from the A roads and tourist hotspots, like you say). It really is like walking through layers in time.

I so enjoy the videos where you show us the remnants of historical London. This one was good as you didn't show much modern traffic & I felt the atmosphere of an earlier city, especially as it got darker. Amazing to know that there are Tudor fragments still. Thank you.

Great vlog as per usual John. I think it’s sad that we weren’t always as history focussed, and much is lost. It does make the preserved buildings, and parts thereof seem more precious, but I feel we’ve lost too much to the dissolution, great fire, blitz and unsympathetic town planning, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Certainly the darkness plays to the atmosphere of a video like this. I hope you had a pint in The Blackfriar, it's got such a brilliant Art Neuveau interior, when you're nearby, well, for me it's not to be missed! Some words on Henry Vll's palace at Richmond might be apposite, maybe a pic or two as there is a bit of it still there! It's almost impossible to put into words, the strange feeling one gets upon seeing a bit of London from a different historical point of view, especially when it's a familiar spot. A certain shiver down the spine perhaps. A pint of decent ale usually sorts it out. A most atmospheric and well presented film! Thank you so much John. ✨🌟👍

Thanks John, another very interesting walk, its an area I know well, I lived in Amen Court from (I think) 1968, my dad worked at St Paul's and I went to school at the Gatehouse School, named after the Gatehouse of St Bartholomew the Great, where Phyllis Wallbank started the school on Montessori lines.. her husband was the vicar and we did our nativity plays in the church. I used to walk from Amen Court to Dalington Street (where the school relocated) via Smithfield Market every day..

A great walk for the New Year. So familiar with this area but always good to see it with fresh eyes. I walked this area before Xmas (including visiting the famous bell in St Sepulchre’s) and need in a wonderful recital in St Bartholomew’s. It’s such an atmospheric place. On your recommendation, I am working my way through the Ben Aaronovitch ‘Rivers of London’ books (currently on book 7) - thoroughly enjoying them.

The King's WARDROBE was NOT just about storing the King's clothing...but it also held all his tapestries, bedding and other soft furnishings and furniture. Which his servants would move when the King/Royal Court went on PROGRESS across England to his castles/manors and to the houses of his wealthy Courtiers. ✌🏻😊

Thanks for that note Jane - that must’ve been a massive job. I believe Henry VIII renovated Bridewell Palace just to accommodate the Emperor Charles and his retinue with all of his stuff on a visit to London - it was a huge party

I'm about to start your video (just waiting for the kettle to boil) and I'm intrigued that I haven't been back to this part of the city since the mid 1980s, and I'm anxious that so much will have changed since then that I may not recognise my old stomping ground in your film. Yet you're tracing places from half a millenium ago. Deep topography mate. I love these walks. Happy new year by the way.

Wonderful video! I’m so glad that Henry VIII didn’t destroy (or completely destroy) St Barts and some of the older churches. He certainly didn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason with regard to what got torn down and what was saved.

A brilliant little known area. Carter Lane was the well-known location of the central London hostel of the YHA for many years. Seems quite incongruous today. The Observer newpaper used to be printed at the bottom of St Andrews Hill [now Mellon bank now]
